Abroad, mercenaries belong to different factions. This is especially true in Africa, where countless factions exist and friction between them is inevitable. Under normal circumstances, both sides would just start fighting.
But some find fighting unnecessary and choose to reconcile. The at-fault party would apologize and offer up weapons, gold, or even beautiful women.
However, all of this came with one condition: the party proposing the apology and reconciliation would hand the other side a dagger. As long as it wasn't a fatal spot like the heart or neck, they would let the other person stab them once.
