"Hello, Madam Amy. Please, come in." Annelise stepped aside, and Zane moved back a step as well. Like a young couple welcoming an elder, they both wore warm smiles.
Madam Amy walked in, holding a tray and looking around with eyes full of admiration.
"Oh, heavens, you've fixed the place up so beautifully!" she exclaimed as she walked. "It's much prettier than when I lived here! Young people are just different—so much energy, such great taste!"
She walked to the dining table and gently set the tray down.
The apple pie was still steaming. Its flaky crust was baked to layered perfection with slightly browned edges, and a thin layer of powdered sugar was sprinkled on top. The sweet aroma of apple and cinnamon wafted out, instantly filling the entire living room.
"Go on, try some," Madam Amy said with a smile. "It's best when it's warm."
Annelise and Zane sat down at the dining table, each taking a slice.
