Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Hidden Truth

The morning sun had barely touched the peaks of Mount Canglan when a sharp knock echoed through Li Ling'er's cave.

She had been awake for hours, unable to sleep. The heat still pulsed beneath her skin, and every time she closed her eyes, she felt him—Su Yang's presence, warm and solid, like a mountain standing against the horizon. It had kept her restless, her thoughts tangled in confusion and something else she didn't dare name.

"Disciple Li." A cold voice cut through her reverie. "Open the door."

Elder Bai.

Li Ling'er scrambled to her feet, smoothing her robes. She had forgotten to pin her hair—the gold-red waves tumbled past her shoulders, catching the lamplight like molten metal. There was no time to hide it.

She opened the cave entrance.

Elder Bai stood in the doorway, her iron-grey hair immaculate, her winter-frost eyes sweeping over Li Ling'er with an intensity that made her want to shrink back. The elder said nothing for a long moment. She simply looked—at Li Ling'er's glowing skin, at her transformed features, at the impossible beauty that now radiated from every inch of her disciple.

Then she stepped inside and closed the formation behind her.

"Last night," Elder Bai said quietly, "I felt a disturbance. A cry. A surge of spiritual energy from this peak." Her gaze sharpened. "It came from your cave."

Li Ling'er's throat went dry. "Elder, I—"

"You have awakened a spiritual body." It was not a question.

Li Ling'er nodded slowly, her hands clasped before her. "I don't know what kind. But something changed inside me. My cultivation jumped to the third level of Qi Refinement. And my appearance..." She gestured helplessly at her reflection in the polished stone.

Elder Bai studied her for a moment longer, then reached into her sleeve. She withdrew two simple jade rings, unadorned and unremarkable.

"These are concealment artifacts," she said, pressing one into Li Ling'er's palm. "Wear this. It will hide your true appearance behind the face you had before the awakening. No one will see what you have become—not even Foundation Establishment elders."

Li Ling'er slipped the ring onto her finger. Immediately, she felt a cool energy wash over her skin. She turned to the mirror and gasped.

Her old face stared back at her. Beautiful, yes—but ordinary. The face she had worn for sixteen years. The glow was gone. The gold-red hair had faded back to autumn flame. Her eyes had lost their golden flecks.

"The effect is temporary," Elder Bai said. "The ring only projects an illusion. But for now, it will protect you."

Li Ling'er touched her cheek, marveling at the deception. "Why do I need to hide?"

Elder Bai's expression grew grave. "Because the sect master is away. She left for the Celestial Summit Conference and will not return for at least a year—perhaps two. In her absence, I cannot guarantee your safety if news of your spiritual body spreads." She held up the second ring. "There was another awakening last night. A boy named Su Yang."

Li Ling'er's heart skipped. "I know. I felt him."

"Take this ring to him. Explain the situation. He must hide his transformation as well—at least until the sect master returns. Do not speak of this to anyone else. Not the other disciples. Not even the senior elders." Elder Bai's eyes bored into her. "Do you understand?"

"Yes, Elder."

"Go. Now. Before the morning assembly."

Li Ling'er took the second ring, bowed deeply, and hurried out of her cave.

---

The walk to Su Yang's cave took only a few minutes, but every step felt like an eternity.

His presence grew stronger as she approached—that warm, solid feeling she had sensed since the awakening. It called to something deep within her, made the heat in her chest pulse in response. She found herself walking faster, her heart pounding for reasons she didn't want to examine.

She stopped before his cave entrance and knocked.

The formation flickered, and the door opened.

Su Yang stood in the doorway, and Li Ling'er forgot how to breathe.

He had changed. Drastically. His light copper hair—a color that hadn't been there yesterday—fell in soft waves around a face that was almost impossibly handsome. His eyes, now a striking golden-brown, widened when he saw her. He had already put on his uniform, but it did little to hide the broadened shoulders and defined muscles beneath.

And he wasn't wearing a concealment ring.

"You—" Li Ling'er started.

"You—" Su Yang said at the same time.

They both stopped. A flush crept up Li Ling'er's cheeks.

Why am I blushing? I never blush.

She held out the ring. "Elder Bai sent me. She said you need to wear this. To hide your... changes."

Su Yang took the ring, his fingers brushing against hers. The contact sent a jolt through both of them—a spark of heat that made Li Ling'er gasp and Su Yang's golden-brown eyes flare.

"What was that?" she whispered.

Su Yang stared at their hands, then at her. "I don't know. But I felt it too."

They stood in silence for a moment, the air between them thick with something unspoken. Li Ling'er became acutely aware of how close they were—close enough to see the faint golden flecks in his irises, close enough to feel the warmth radiating from his skin.

This is ridiculous, she told herself. Pull yourself together.

But her body refused to listen.

Su Yang seemed to be struggling with the same battle. His jaw tightened, and he took a small step back—not much, but enough to break the tension.

"Come in," he said, his voice rougher than usual. "We need to talk."

---

Inside the cave, Su Yang examined the jade ring Elder Bai had sent.

"A concealment artifact," Li Ling'er explained. "It will hide your true appearance behind your old face. Elder Bai says we must remain hidden until the sect master returns—and that could be a year or two."

Su Yang nodded slowly. A year or two of hiding. It was a long time, but better than being exposed.

He slipped the ring onto his finger. Cool energy washed over him, and when he looked at his reflection in the polished stone, his old face stared back—the handsome but unremarkable features he had worn yesterday. The light copper hair had darkened back to black. The golden-brown eyes had faded to bright brown.

But beneath the illusion, he could still feel the power humming in his veins.

"Show me," he said suddenly, turning to Li Ling'er. "Remove your ring. I want to see your real face."

Li Ling'er hesitated. "Why?"

"Because I felt something when you arrived. Something strong. And I want to understand it." He met her eyes. "Please."

She bit her lip, then slowly slid the ring from her finger.

The illusion shattered.

Li Ling'er stood before him in her true form, and Su Yang's breath caught in his throat.

She was stunning. Her gold-red hair cascaded around her shoulders like a waterfall of fire and molten metal. Her skin glowed with an inner light, pale and luminous. Her phoenix eyes, now flecked with gold, regarded him with a mixture of shyness and anticipation. And her features—refined, perfect, almost supernatural—made her look like a goddess descended from heaven.

"You're beautiful," Su Yang said, the words leaving his mouth before he could stop them.

Li Ling'er's cheeks flushed crimson. "You're just saying that."

"I'm not." He shook his head, still staring. "I've never seen anyone so... you're beautiful, Li Ling'er. Truly."

She looked down, a small smile playing at her lips. The heat in her chest—the fire that had been burning since her awakening—seemed to flare with warmth at his words. He means it, she thought. He actually means it.

And she realized, with a start, that she was deeply attracted to him.

It wasn't just his transformed appearance—though that was certainly part of it. It was something deeper. Something that had been there since the caravan, growing quietly in the background, now ignited by their shared awakening.

Stop, she told herself. Focus.

She put the ring back on, and the illusion returned. "We need to figure out what's happened to us," she said, her voice steadier than she felt. "Elder Bai gave me access to the higher level scripture pavilion. We can search for records about spiritual bodies."

Su Yang nodded, slipping his own ring back on. "Let's go."

---

The higher level scripture pavilion was a separate building behind the main pavilion, accessible only to inner disciples and those with special permission. Li Ling'er's jade token—given to her by Elder Bai—glowed at the entrance, and the formation parted for them both.

Inside, the air was thick with the smell of old paper and ancient ink. Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling, filled with scrolls, jade slips, and crumbling tomes that looked older than the sect itself.

They split up, searching for anything about spiritual bodies.

Su Yang scanned shelf after shelf, pulling down records and scanning their contents. He read about the Crystal Ice Soul Body—a rare constitution that granted absolute control over ice and cold, found only in those born in the frozen north. He read about the Thundercloud Battle Body, which allowed its owner to transform their flesh into living lightning for brief periods. He read about the Void Shadow Body, a terrifyingly rare physique that made its owner nearly invisible to spiritual senses.

Each description fascinated him. But none matched what he had become.

Then Li Ling'er gasped.

"I found it!" she called out, her voice trembling with excitement.

Su Yang hurried over. She was holding a scroll titled Rare Constitutions of Fire Affinity, her hands shaking.

"The Blazing Phoenix Spiritual Body," she read aloud. "A legendary constitution that appears once every one hundred thousand years in those with fire spiritual roots. It grants immense fire affinity, rapid cultivation speed, and a connection to the mythical phoenix. Those with this body possess extraordinary beauty and a natural warmth that draws others to them. When paired with a compatible spiritual body, cultivation speed can increase dramatically. The Blazing Phoenix is considered one of the highest-grade spiritual bodies in existence."

Li Ling'er looked up at him, her eyes shining. "Once every one hundred thousand years. I have one of the rarest spiritual bodies in history."

Su Yang smiled—genuinely happy for her. "That's incredible. You should be proud."

She hugged the scroll to her chest, beaming. "I need to read this entire section. There's so much more."

While Li Ling'er immersed herself in the fire-affinity records, Su Yang continued his own search. He needed to find a legitimate dragon-type spiritual body—something he could claim as his own.

He found it in a jade slip titled Dragon Lineages: A Compendium of Draconic Spiritual Bodies.

The entry read:

The Imperial Dragon Physique: A legendary spiritual body, extremely rare. Grants the user an aura of authority that can suppress weaker cultivators. Physical strength and spiritual energy capacity are greatly enhanced. Those with this body possess a commanding presence and natural leadership qualities. Only one or two such physiques appear in a millennium.

Su Yang read the passage several times. It was perfect—rare enough to explain his rapid cultivation and physical changes, but not so dangerous that it would raise alarms. The description matched what he could safely reveal: enhanced strength, greater spiritual energy capacity, an aura of authority.

This will do, he decided. The Imperial Dragon Physique.

He copied the relevant passages onto a blank jade slip and returned to Li Ling'er.

"I found mine," he said, showing her the slip. "The Imperial Dragon Physique. It's a legendary dragon-type body. Enhances physical strength and spiritual energy capacity. Gives me an aura of authority."

Li Ling'er read the description, her eyes widening. "Imperial Dragon Physique. That's incredibly rare too. No wonder your awakening was so powerful."

Su Yang nodded. "It explains the roar I felt during the awakening. And the physical changes."

"It does." She handed back the slip with a warm smile. "We're both rare, then. A Blazing Phoenix and an Imperial Dragon. The sect is lucky to have us."

Su Yang returned her smile, but inside, a small knot of guilt twisted in his chest.

I'm lying to her. She trusts me, and I'm lying.

He pushed the thought aside. There was no other choice. The truth would put her in danger—and herself as well.

One day, he promised himself silently. When the time is right, I'll tell her everything.

But for now, he would carry the secret alone.

---

He read about the Heavenly Yin Meridians, a body that allowed its owner to store vast amounts of spiritual energy but made them vulnerable to yang-attuned attacks. He read about the War God's Physique, a brutal constitution that enhanced combat abilities to supernatural levels but stunted spiritual perception.

Each entry was fascinating, but none compared to the ancient book history book he found where it explains about an ancient emperor's life and his spiritual body that has similar characteristics as his.

---

Elder Bai received them in her private study, a small room filled with scrolls and the faint scent of incense.

Li Ling'er reported first, describing the Blazing Phoenix Spiritual Body with barely contained excitement. Elder Bai listened, and for the first time, Su Yang saw something like awe flicker across the elder's usually cold features.

"The Blazing Phoenix," Elder Bai murmured. "Once every one hundred thousand years. I never thought I would live to see such a constitution." She looked at Li Ling'er with new respect. "You are a treasure beyond measure, Disciple Li. The sect will protect you with everything it has."

Li Ling'er bowed, her cheeks flushing with pride. "Thank you, Elder."

Elder Bai turned to Su Yang. "And you?"

"Imperial Dragon Physique," Su Yang said, handing her the jade slip. "A legendary dragon-type body. Enhanced strength, spiritual energy capacity, and an aura of authority."

Elder Bai read the entry carefully, then nodded. "The Imperial Dragon is rare as well—though not as rare as the Blazing Phoenix. Still, you are a great asset to the sect." She set down the slip. "Both of you will keep your rings on at all times. Do not remove them except in absolute privacy. The sect master will want to examine you personally when she returns—and that may take a year or two. Until then, you will tell no one about your awakenings."

She stood, and the meeting was over. "You may go. Train hard. Grow strong. The sect has high hopes for both of you."

---

Su Yang walked Li Ling'er back toward her cave. The morning sun was fully up now, painting the mountain in shades of gold and green.

"I'm glad we found answers," Li Ling'er said, her voice soft. "I was so scared last night. I didn't know what was happening to me."

"Me neither," Su Yang admitted. "But we're not alone. We have each other."

She looked at him, and for a moment, the warmth in her eyes made his chest ache. "Yes. We do."

They stopped outside her cave. Li Ling'er hesitated, then reached out and touched his arm.

"Su Yang... whatever happens, I'm glad you're here. I'm glad we're in the same sect."

He covered her hand with his own, feeling the warmth of her skin even through the concealment ring's illusion. "So am I."

She smiled—that rare, genuine smile he had seen only a few times—and disappeared into her cave.

Su Yang stood there for a long moment, staring at the closed formation.

I lied to her. I told her my spiritual body is something it's not.

The guilt was heavier than he had expected. Li Ling'er had trusted him. She had shared her discovery, her joy, her fear. And he had repaid that trust with a lie.

But what else could I do? If she knew the truth—if anyone knew—I'd be hunted. Killed. And she'd be in danger too.

He thought of the ancient history book got hidden in his robe. The words still echoed in his mind:

The last known Dragon Seal Emperor was executed thousands of years ago by a coalition of the three great sects. His harem of thirty-seven spiritual body cultivators was disbanded. Thirty-six of them chose death rather than separation.

Thousands of years. The great sects had not forgotten. They would kill him if they knew.

I have to protect her. Protect myself. That means keeping the secret.

He turned and walked back to his cave, the weight of the hidden book pressing against his chest.

One day, he promised himself again. When I'm strong enough. When I understand this body. When I can protect us both.

Then I'll tell her the truth.

But for now, he would carry the secret alone. The Dragon Seal Emperor would sleep—hidden beneath the mask of the Imperial Dragon.
