Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The First Exploit

Ethan stepped out of the cramped shack into the narrow alley of the South Slum District.

The air was thick with the stench of unwashed bodies, rotting garbage, and smoke from cheap coal fires. Makeshift wooden buildings leaned against each other like drunkards. Children with dirty faces ran between puddles, while gaunt adults huddled in corners, eyes dull with hunger.

This was the starting zone for commoners — the place most players ignored after the first hour because there was nothing valuable here.

But Ethan knew better.

He moved carefully, bare feet slapping against the cold mud. His body was still weak, Level 1 stats dragging him down like chains. Every step reminded him how fragile this new life was.

Liam's coughing echoed in his mind. Forty-seven days. No — forty-six now.

He had to move fast.

His first goal was simple: trigger the hidden chain that only veteran players knew about.

In the original game, on the third day after character creation, if you gave a single copper coin to a certain old beggar in the central market square, it unlocked a low-level but incredibly useful skill book — "Shadow Step" — a basic movement skill that increased agility and allowed short bursts of speed. For a Level 1 commoner, it was a game-changer.

Most new players missed it because the beggar looked completely ordinary.

Ethan scanned the crowded market street ahead. Vendors shouted prices for stale bread and rusty knives. A few guards in dull armor patrolled lazily, their eyes looking for easy troublemakers.

There — sitting against a cracked stone wall near the fountain.

An old man wrapped in tattered gray robes, head bowed, hand outstretched. His face was hidden beneath a hood. To any normal person, he was just another beggar.

But Ethan's eyes narrowed.

He approached slowly and stopped in front of the old man.

Without a word, Ethan reached into his pocket. His fingers found the three copper coins he had scavenged from the shack earlier — all the money they currently owned.

He dropped one coin into the beggar's wrinkled palm.

The old man's hand closed around it instantly.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then the beggar slowly lifted his head.

His eyes were sharp — far too sharp for a slum beggar. A faint, unnatural blue glint flickered in them for a split second.

"You…" the old man whispered, voice raspy but clear. "You're not supposed to be here."

Ethan's heart skipped a beat.

In the game, the beggar was supposed to mumble thanks and hand over the skill book after a short delay. He was never supposed to speak like this.

The old man tilted his head, studying Ethan with uncomfortable intensity.

"The world has rules, boy. Extras follow the script… or they get erased. Yet here you are, making the first move three days early. Interesting."

Ethan kept his face neutral, but his mind raced.

This wasn't scripted behavior. The NPC was reacting to him personally — to the "Anomaly" title he carried.

He decided to push.

"I'm not here to follow anyone's script," Ethan said quietly. "I need power. Fast."

The beggar let out a dry, wheezing laugh that sounded like rustling dead leaves.

"Power? In this world, power is reserved for those the story wants to shine. You are background noise. A flickering pixel meant to vanish when the camera moves on."

He leaned forward, voice dropping even lower.

"But anomalies… anomalies break things."

The old man's hand moved with surprising speed. He pressed something small and worn into Ethan's palm — not the expected skill book, but a simple iron key with strange runes etched along its edge.

System Notification: [You have received "Rusty Key of the Forgotten Cellar"] [Hidden Quest Chain Activated: "Whispers from Below"] [Warning: This path was not intended for Extra-class characters. High risk of fate correction.]

The old man smiled, revealing teeth that were too white and too sharp.

"Go to the abandoned well behind the old tannery at midnight tonight. Use the key. What you find there may help you… or kill you. Either way, the story will try to fix the mistake that is you."

Ethan clutched the key tightly.

Before he could ask anything else, the beggar waved a hand dismissively.

"Now leave. And remember — eyes are already watching. The world doesn't like things that shouldn't exist."

Ethan turned and walked away, forcing himself not to run.

His pulse was racing.

This was better than he expected. The quest had triggered, but the NPC's reaction proved something important: the system — or whatever governed this world — was aware of his presence. It was already trying to correct the "error" that was Ethan Crowe.

He couldn't afford to be careless.

As he made his way back toward the shack, a new blue window popped up, glitching slightly at the edges.

Title Unlocked:The Anomaly (Hidden) Effect: Slight resistance to "Fate Correction" events. Increased chance of discovering hidden content. Warning: Higher visibility to major story characters and world enforcers.

Ethan allowed himself a small, cold smile.

Good.

Let them notice.

He would rather burn brightly and die fighting than fade away quietly like the extra he was supposed to be.

Back at the shack, Liam was sitting up, trying to mend a torn piece of cloth with shaking hands.

"Brother? Did you find anything?"

Ethan hid the key in his pocket and crouched beside his little brother.

"Not yet," he said softly, placing a hand on Liam's thin shoulder. "But I will. Tonight, I have somewhere to go. Stay inside and lock the door. Don't open it for anyone."

Liam looked worried but nodded.

Ethan stood up, eyes hardening.

One step at a time.

First, survive tonight's quest.

Then grind levels like his life — and Liam's — depended on it.

Because it did.

The main characters of this world were probably still sleeping in their comfortable beds, dreaming of their glorious futures.

Meanwhile, in the slums, a side character who refused to vanish was about to take his first real bite out of the story.
