Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — The Night Everything Changed

Love doesn't always begin with a confession.

Sometimes… it grows quietly.

In small moments.

In shared silences.

In the way two people start needing each other… without even realizing it.

And that's exactly what happened to us.

By the time college ended…

We were no longer just friends.

We were something more.

Something unspoken.

But deeply understood.

It wasn't a grand proposal.

No roses.

No perfect setup.

Just a normal evening…

That changed everything.

We were sitting on the same terrace where it all started.

The sky looked the same.

The city lights hadn't changed.

But we had.

"You're leaving next month," I said softly.

He nodded.

"Yeah… professional training."

"And after that?"

"Matches. Career. Life."

His voice was calm.

But I could feel the distance already forming.

"Things will change, won't they?" I asked.

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead… he looked at me.

Straight into my eyes.

And for the first time…

There was no hesitation.

No walls.

"Only if you let them," he said.

My heart skipped a beat.

"What do you mean?"

He took a deep breath.

Like he was about to say something important.

Something real.

"Stay with me."

Those three words…

Felt heavier than anything I had ever heard.

"I don't just mean now," he continued.

"I mean… always."

Silence.

My heartbeat was loud.

Fast.

Uncontrollable.

"Are you… proposing?" I whispered.

He smirked slightly.

"Do you want me to make it fancy?"

I laughed softly through my nervousness.

"No… I just want it to be real."

"It is," he said.

And for the first time…

I believed him completely.

"I'm not perfect," he added.

"I don't promise fairy tales… or easy love."

"That's okay," I replied.

"I don't need perfect. I just need you."

And just like that…

We chose each other.

The next few months felt like a dream.

Everything moved fast.

Too fast, maybe.

But we didn't care.

Against all odds…

Against all expectations…

We got married.

It wasn't easy.

There were objections.

Questions.

Doubts.

"Are you sure about this?" people asked.

"You're too young."

"Focus on your career."

"Love doesn't last."

But we ignored everything.

Because for us…

It was simple.

We wanted each other.

And that was enough.

The wedding was small.

Simple.

But real.

He stood beside me.

Not as the confident cricket captain everyone admired.

But as someone…

Who had finally chosen something for himself.

When he held my hand…

It felt different.

Stronger.

Like a promise.

"I won't let anything happen to us," he whispered.

I smiled.

"I trust you."

I didn't know then…

How dangerous that trust would become.

Days turned into weeks.

Weeks into months.

Marriage wasn't perfect.

But it was ours.

Late-night talks.

Random fights.

Laughs.

Silences.

And slowly…

We started building a life.

Together.

But life…

Doesn't always follow plans.

One night…

Everything changed.

He had a late meeting.

I insisted on going with him.

"I'll wait in the car," I said.

He sighed.

"You don't have to."

"I want to."

He looked at me for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

The roads were quiet.

The night was calm.

Too calm.

I remember looking at him.

Driving.

Focused.

Calm.

Just like always.

"Do you ever regret it?" I asked suddenly.

"Regret what?"

"Marrying me."

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead…

He smiled.

A real one.

"That's the only thing I don't regret."

My heart felt full.

Complete.

Safe.

And then—

Everything shattered.

A bright light.

A loud horn.

A truck.

Coming straight at us.

Too fast.

Too close.

"James—!"

Before I could react—

He turned the wheel.

Shielding my side.

Protecting me.

And then—

CRASH.

Pain.

Noise.

Darkness.

I don't remember what happened after that.

When I opened my eyes…

Everything felt distant.

Blurry.

Broken.

Hospital.

Machines.

Voices.

And then…

Him.

Lying on the bed.

Unconscious.

Still.

"Is he okay?" I asked, my voice trembling.

The doctor looked at me.

"He has a head injury."

My heart dropped.

"Will he be fine?"

A pause.

A long one.

"We're not sure."

Time stopped.

Hours passed.

Maybe more.

I didn't know.

I didn't care.

I just sat there.

Holding his hand.

Waiting.

Praying.

"Wake up…" I whispered.

"Please…"

And then—

He moved.

His fingers twitched.

His eyes slowly opened.

Relief rushed through me.

"James…"

He looked around.

Confused.

Lost.

His eyes finally landed on me.

For a second…

Everything felt okay.

And then—

He spoke.

"Who… are you?"

Silence.

My world…

Collapsed.

"What…?" I whispered.

He frowned.

"I don't… know you."

Tears filled my eyes instantly.

"No… it's me… it's Emily…"

He shook his head slightly.

"No… I would remember."

That moment—

Didn't just hurt.

It destroyed everything.

Because the man who once promised—

"I won't let anything happen to us…"

Had already forgotten us

He saved my life…

But lost every memory of me.

And now…

I was just a stranger to the man who was once my everything.
