Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1 — THE BETRAYAL OF A KING

The continent stood divided under the rule of many kingdoms.

From the flourishing human nations to the hidden lands of elves and dwarves, and even the dark dominion of demons, power was scattered across the world like fractured pieces of a broken crown.

At the very center of it all stood the strongest human kingdom—

Valcrest.

And now…

It was burning.

Flames devoured the battlefield as the sky roared with thunder.

Steel clashed against steel, magic tore through the air, and the ground trembled beneath the chaos of war.

"Hold the line! Do not let their formation break through!" a commander shouted, his voice strained with desperation.

"We are losing ground on the eastern flank! Reinforcements are needed immediately!" another soldier cried out, blood staining his armor.

Panic spread like wildfire.

And yet—

At the center of the battlefield stood a man who did not move.

Crown Prince Luxe von Valcrest.

Clad in royal blue armor lined with silver, his presence alone steadied the crumbling morale of the army. Lightning crackled faintly around him, dancing like a silent servant responding to his will.

His sharp eyes scanned the battlefield, calm… calculating… unreadable.

"Reinforce the eastern flank at once," Luxe commanded, his voice firm and unwavering. "Move the mages forward and stabilize the defensive formation before it collapses completely."

"Yes, Your Highness!" the soldiers responded, immediately moving to carry out his orders.

For a moment, the chaos slowed.

But inside—

Something felt wrong.

Luxe narrowed his eyes slightly.

This war… something about it is unnatural. The enemy movements… the timing… it feels as if everything is being controlled from behind the scenes.

A subtle chill ran down his spine.

Unseen by others, a shadow lingered nearby.

Perched silently atop a broken structure, hidden within darkness, a pair of calm eyes observed the battlefield with unwavering focus.

Lumi.

His shadow.

His protector.

"I will not let anything reach him," she whispered softly to herself, her voice carrying absolute resolve. "Even if it costs my life, I will protect him until my final breath."

"Still standing strong, I see."

A familiar voice cut through the battlefield noise.

Luxe turned slightly.

There stood Kael.

A man he had trusted more than most.

Kael walked calmly through the chaos as if the battlefield meant nothing to him. His expression was relaxed, almost amused, as though he were merely observing a performance rather than participating in a war.

"Kael," Luxe spoke, his tone steady. "Is the western front secured already? I expected resistance there."

"It has already been handled," Kael replied with a faint smile. "There was nothing particularly challenging worth mentioning."

Luxe studied him carefully.

There was something off.

Something subtle… yet deeply unsettling.

"Your mana…" Luxe said slowly, his gaze sharpening. "It feels unstable today. Heavier than usual… almost distorted."

Kael's smile deepened slightly.

"You have always been perceptive," he said calmly. "Perhaps a little too perceptive for your own good."

Silence.

The air grew heavy.

The battlefield noise seemed to fade into the distance, replaced by an invisible tension that neither of them acknowledged directly.

Luxe's instincts screamed at him.

Danger.

And then—

It happened.

SHHK—!!

Pain exploded through his body.

Luxe's eyes widened slightly as he looked down.

A blade.

Piercing straight through him.

"…Kael…" his voice came out low, filled with disbelief. "What are you doing…?"

Kael stood before him, the sword firmly in his grip, his expression now stripped of all warmth.

Cold.

Empty.

"I lived in your shadow," Kael said quietly. "Watching you succeed at everything… watching you be praised, admired, worshipped… while I stood behind you, unnoticed."

Dark energy began to seep from his body.

A corrupted aura.

Demonic.

"You had everything handed to you," Kael continued, his voice lowering further. "And I had nothing."

Luxe clenched his teeth, his body weakening.

Demon power… so that's what this is.

Before he could react—

A sudden blur cut through the air.

"Your Highness—!"

Lumi.

She appeared between them in an instant.

STAB—!!

Time seemed to freeze.

Luxe's breath caught in his throat.

"…Lumi…?" he whispered.

Her body trembled slightly as the blade pierced through her.

But—

She was smiling.

"I am glad…" Lumi said softly, her voice faint but gentle. "I could protect you… one last time…"

"No…" Luxe's voice broke as he caught her falling body. "Why would you do something like this…? You didn't have to—!"

Her hand weakly grasped his armor.

"I am your shadow…" she whispered, her eyes slowly losing light. "Protecting you… is my purpose… my happiness…"

"Stay with me," Luxe said desperately, holding her closer. "Don't close your eyes… Lumi, stay with me!"

"…Always…" she murmured faintly. "By your side…"

And then—

Silence.

Her body went still.

Something inside Luxe shattered.

Before he could even process it—

Another strike came.

SHHK—!!

A blade pierced him from behind.

His body stiffened.

"…Kael…" Luxe muttered weakly, his voice trembling with fury and sorrow. "You coward… attacking from behind… after everything…"

Kael's voice echoed coldly.

"Even your shadow has fallen," he said. "Now, you will follow her."

Luxe fell to his knees.

Still holding Lumi.

I failed…

His vision blurred.

The battlefield faded.

Everything grew distant.

I couldn't protect anyone… not my kingdom… not my people… not even her…

His grip tightened weakly around Lumi's lifeless body.

If I get another chance…

His fading eyes burned with one final spark of determination.

I will change everything.

Darkness consumed him.

And just before everything disappeared—

A faint light appeared.
