Chapter 96 - Chapter 96 — The Mountain That Learned to Fight

The first layer of the barrier fell at midnight.

It did not break in a single explosion. It dissolved by sections, like thin ice beneath too many footsteps. A bright line crossed the northern side of the mountain, flickered three times, and went dark. The air that had remained separated by the formation suddenly mixed with smoke, dust, and shouting.

The attackers advanced.

Han Yue received them on the lower terrace.

—First row, shields! Second row, do not release until you can see their eyes!

Twenty outer disciples formed behind stone parapets. Not all were strong cultivators. Some had barely entered Qi Gathering. Others were still completing Body Refinement. But they knew the ground and had repeated their positions until they could find them in darkness.

Enemy arrows descended first.

The shields angled upward. Several points bounced away. One pierced the wood and entered Deng Rui's arm. The young man shouted, but did not release formation.

—Bai Lian will kill me if you stain her new bandage! —Han Yue roared.

Deng Rui clenched his teeth.

—Then do not tell her!

—That is the spirit!

Fire from Han Yue's spear crossed the terrace edge and forced the first attackers apart. It was not a large technique; large techniques consumed too much qi and revealed the defender's rhythm. He released short, precise strikes, using heat to break coordination instead of seeking quick kills.

To the west, Jian Mu returned from the destroyed extractor and found another front opening among the trees. Grey Cloud auxiliary disciples did not attack in a mass. They advanced in groups of five, protected by wind currents that diverted projectiles.

Jian Mu watched the leader. He was a thin-faced man with a long sword and an auxiliary instructor badge. He moved his fingers before every change in wind.

—Cut the third man in each group —Jian Mu told the disciples accompanying him.

One looked confused.

—The third?

—He holds the rhythm. Without him, the wind crosses itself.

—And the leader?

—He is mine.

Jian Mu descended the slope without releasing full sword intent. He had learned that a blade shown too early allows the enemy to prepare a defense. He let the instructor believe he faced a quick young man and nothing more.

Their swords collided.

The man smiled when he sensed Jian Mu's lower cultivation.

—A trash sect teaches courage to children.

—My village died because of men who spoke too much.

The smile vanished.

The instructor released three wind-wrapped cuts. Jian Mu blocked the first, avoided the second, and allowed the third to graze his side. Blood appeared, but so did the opening he wanted. He stepped inside the reach of the long weapon and cut not the throat, but the wrist controlling the gestures.

The wind collapsed.

Behind him, Primordial Firmament disciples attacked the third man in each formation. The currents crossed and threw Grey Cloud's own members against trees and stone.

Jian Mu placed the point of his sword against the instructor's throat.

—Return and tell Zhao Ming to come himself next time.

—You will not kill me?

—I want you to remember who defeated you.

The man withdrew while holding his wrist. There was no mercy in Jian Mu's decision. There was a message.

At the mountain center, Mu Qingxue directed a war almost no one could see.

Dozens of plates floated before her. Each represented a section of ground, a qi route, or a team. Her fingers moved without rest, opening and closing paths. When an enemy line penetrated too deeply, she turned a formation so a familiar path became a maze. When defenders needed to withdraw, she reduced pressure along one route for seven breaths and sealed it behind them.

Lin Yuan remained beside her, but did not give every order. That was the test. He could see system messages, integrity changes, and invisible warnings, but he had to turn information into trust rather than absolute control.

Territorial integrity: 83%.

Internal cohesion: stable.

Disciples in critical danger: 3.

Lin Yuan pointed toward a plate near the medicinal forest.

—Bai Lian has too many wounded near the southern corridor.

Mu Qingxue checked the flow.

—If I open the central route, an enemy unit may follow them.

—Send cold smoke through the corridor and change the stone signs. Make it look sealed.

—I need Su Wan.

Lin Yuan activated the general communication plate.

—Su Wan, can you create mist without freezing the wounded?

Her voice came broken through interference.

—I can if Bai Lian keeps the passage above a certain temperature.

—Coordinate directly.

In the temporary infirmary, Bai Lian heard the instruction while stitching a disciple's shoulder.

—Exact temperature? —she asked.

Su Wan stood at the entrance, pale from continuous use of her physique.

—Enough that water does not crystallize in their lungs.

—That is not a measurement.

—When the copper bowl begins to fog, lower the brazier.

Bai Lian looked at the bowl.

—That is a measurement.

They worked together. Su Wan spread low mist through the southern corridor, cooling it until it became opaque. Bai Lian regulated braziers and placed warm cloths over the faces of the wounded. Enemies who tried to follow the retreat entered the mist and found false markers leading into a closed courtyard.

Han Yue waited there with five disciples.

—Thank you for coming —he said—. We were beginning to grow bored.

The battle lasted for hours, and no area remained the same. The enemy occupied a terrace and lost it. Defenders closed one tunnel and had to open another. Techniques illuminated the mountain in blue, red, and gold flashes.

The Heishan Clan had numbers. Grey Cloud had discipline. The mercenaries had dirty experience. But the Primordial Firmament Sect possessed something none of them had calculated well: every important member covered another's weakness.

Mo Qian did not fight on the line. He moved behind it with three assistants, changing flags, leaving false orders where the enemy could find them, and capturing messengers. One mercenary recognized him near a storehouse.

—You! The thief from the southern routes!

Mo Qian smiled.

—I have had many names. That was not among my favorites.

The mercenary attacked with two knives. Mo Qian retreated through an open door. He looked clumsy, almost trapped. When the man entered, he stepped on a cord. Nothing happened.

He laughed.

—A broken trap?

—No —Mo Qian answered from the other side—. A bell.

The sound attracted a Heishan patrol, which saw the mercenary inside a storehouse marked with a stolen version of their own emblem. Within seconds, both groups accused each other of betrayal. Mo Qian closed the door from outside and kept walking.

Shortly before dawn, the coalition changed strategy.

The porcelain-masked figure advanced to the edge of the second defensive layer. It was not a puppet like those from the previous night. Its body breathed. Its qi pressed down on the ground. A red robe showed beneath pale armor, and it held a short staff covered in carved eyes.

Gu Tian saw it from the central terrace and lost color.

—That does not belong to this lower realm —he murmured.

Lin Yuan felt the medallion grow warm.

The system displayed a warning.

Embodied projection of a superior force.

Cultivation suppressed by world laws.

Estimated level within current realm: incomplete Celestial Throne, severely restricted.

Even restricted, it stood far above anyone on the mountain.

The figure raised the staff.

The carved eyes opened.

A silent wave crossed the second barrier. It did not break stone or wood. It struck souls.

Disciples and attackers fell alike, clutching their heads. Those who carried fear saw what they feared most. Those burdened by guilt heard dead voices. Mu Qingxue's formations trembled because her assistants lost concentration.

Lin Yuan saw the altar again.

He saw the woman release him.

This time his internal demon showed a face without tears.

She never searched for you.

Lin Yuan drove his nails into his palm.

—That is not my memory —he said aloud.

Mu Qingxue, kneeling beside the plates, heard him.

—What?

—It is using our wounds. Do not argue with the images. Find something that is here and now.

He took the general communication plate.

—Everyone listen. Say your name. Say where you are. Say who stands beside you.

At first there was only static and ragged breathing.

Bai Lian answered first.

—Bai Lian. North infirmary. Su Wan is with me.

Su Wan spoke next.

—Su Wan. North infirmary. Bai Lian will not stop giving orders.

Weak laughter crossed the channel.

Han Yue tightened his grip on the spear.

—Han Yue. Lower terrace. Deng Rui is still bleeding and still complaining.

—I am not complaining —a voice protested behind him.

Jian Mu closed his eyes.

—Jian Mu. Western path. Three disciples with me. The mountain is still standing.

One by one, names filled the network.

The illusions did not disappear, but they lost strength. The sect anchored itself not to a technique, but to one another's presence.

The masked figure tilted its head.

—Interesting.

Lin Yuan left the control room.

Mu Qingxue caught his sleeve.

—You cannot face it alone.

—I do not intend to.

—Then where are you going?

Lin Yuan looked at the plates where each light represented someone who had spoken a name.

—To make certain it does not fight alone either.

When he appeared on the central terrace, dawn was beginning to brighten the sky behind the masked figure. The attackers moved aside. The defenders raised their heads.

Heishan Rong stepped from the lines with his saber in hand.

—So the wounded founder can still walk.

Lin Yuan descended one step.

—Far enough to watch you fail again.

The porcelain mask turned toward the hidden medallion.

—Give me the key, and I will allow this war to end.

Lin Yuan looked around: wounded disciples, damaged formations, smoke above the roofs. The cost was already high. He could feel everyone's fear waiting for his answer.

—No —he said.

The figure lifted the staff.

And the second layer of the barrier began to split from within.
