On this day, the atmosphere in the Indigo Plateau's main stadium reached an unprecedented peak. Golden sunlight bathed every corner, the stands were packed with spectators, colorful flags fluttered in the wind, and waves of cheers surged like a roaring tide.
The championship throne of the Indigo League was now only one step away for the two trainers standing here.
Ash stood at the entrance of the contestant tunnel, taking a deep breath as he felt the burning anticipation and battle intent filling the arena.
Pikachu stood on his shoulder, letting out a determined "Pika!" as small sparks danced across its cheeks, its eyes filled with resolve.
"It's finally come to this, Pikachu." Ash gently stroked Pikachu's chin, his gaze piercing through the shadows of the tunnel toward the figure standing across from him.
His opponent in the finals was a woman dressed in the familiar attire of a nurse, Nurse Joy.
But this Nurse Joy was unlike any he had seen at a Pokémon Center. She wore frameless glasses, her sharp and composed gaze exuding both scholarly intellect and the powerful aura of a seasoned trainer.
She was the same exceptional individual who had placed second only to Ash in the Pokémon League Qualification Exam.
Unlike other Nurse Joys, she did not serve at a Pokémon Center. Instead, she specialized in combining Pokémon battle theory with clinical rehabilitation, known as a "Combat Medical Officer."
"Ash from Pallet Town, we finally meet on the battlefield," Nurse Joy adjusted her glasses, her voice gentle yet firm. "The written exam and simulated battles were nothing compared to a real match."
Ash stepped forward, meeting her gaze with a confident smile. "I've been looking forward to this too, Miss Joy. Your theoretical knowledge is flawless, but I wonder if your real battle command is just as impressive. My goal is the championship, and I won't stop here."
"Very well." Nurse Joy nodded slightly. "You must have studied me. My ace, Blissey, is already prepared. It will show you that the power of healing can become both the strongest shield and the sharpest spear."
The referee signaled both sides to take their positions. The entire stadium fell silent, leaving only the sound of flags fluttering in the wind.
"The final match of the Indigo League begins now! Ash from Pallet Town versus Joy from the Pokémon Medical Academy! The format is a full six-on-six battle. The match ends when all Pokémon on one side are unable to battle! Trainers, send out your first Pokémon!"
"Go, Primeape!" Ash threw his Poké Ball first, aiming to seize the initiative with a Fighting-type offense.
"Go, Jynx."
The matchup was tricky. Fighting-type moves were strong against Ice, but Psychic-type moves countered Fighting.
"Primeape, use Karate Chop!" Ash attacked first.
"Jynx, use Confusion to restrain it!" Nurse Joy responded calmly.
A blue glow flashed in Jynx's eyes as invisible psychic power instantly bound the charging Primeape.
But Ash's Primeape had been trained under Bruno and had developed resistance to psychic interference. With a furious roar, its muscles bulged as it forcefully broke free from the restraint, striking toward Jynx with a powerful chop.
"Now, Jynx, use Lovely Kiss!" Nurse Joy swiftly changed tactics.
Jynx puckered its lips, sending a blown kiss straight at Primeape. Caught off guard, Primeape was thrown into confusion, lashing out wildly, even turning its Cross Chop against itself.
"Not good! Primeape, snap out of it!" Ash called out anxiously.
"Jynx, don't give it any chance, keep using Confusion!"
Under the dual pressure of confusion and psychic attacks, Primeape struggled valiantly, but in the end, it collapsed under the continuous assault.
"Primeape is unable to battle! Jynx wins!"
Starting off at a disadvantage, Ash took a deep breath and recalled Primeape. "You did well. Get some rest."
He looked toward Nurse Joy, his expression growing more serious. Her command was calm and efficient, and she excelled at exploiting status conditions. She was a formidable opponent.
"For the second Pokémon, go, Magneton!"
The shiny Magneton floated onto the battlefield. With its dual Electric and Steel typing, it had excellent resistance against both Psychic and Ice-type attacks.
"Jynx, use Shadow Ball!"
"Magneton, use Magnet Rise to dodge, then Fire Flash Cannon!"
Magneton deftly avoided the incoming sphere of dark energy. Its body gleamed with a metallic sheen as it fired a blazing steel beam that struck Jynx directly. It was super effective. Jynx let out a cry before collapsing.
"Jynx is unable to battle! Magneton wins!"
Nurse Joy calmly recalled Jynx. "Well done. Next, it's your turn."
Wigglytuff stepped onto the field, its face wearing an innocent smile.
"Magneton, continue with Flash Cannon!"
"Wigglytuff, use Disarming Voice!"
The pleasant sound waves collided with the steel beam, canceling each other out.
Although Disarming Voice was not very effective against Magneton, it still disrupted its attack rhythm.
"Wigglytuff, use Rollout!"
Wigglytuff curled into a ball and began rolling across the field at high speed, making it difficult to track.
"Magneton, use Thunder Wave to slow it down!"
The Thunder Wave spread out, but Wigglytuff's rolling path was erratic, narrowly avoiding it. Meanwhile, Rollout's power continued to increase over time.
"Now, Wigglytuff, strike!"
Seizing the moment when Magneton released Thunder Wave, Wigglytuff suddenly accelerated and slammed into it.
Although Steel resisted Normal-type attacks, the accumulated power of Rollout still dealt considerable damage.
"Magneton, use Thunderbolt at point-blank range!"
At such close distance, Thunderbolt was impossible to dodge.
Golden lightning surged forward instantly, engulfing Wigglytuff.
"Wigglytuff is unable to battle! Magneton wins!"
Ash had taken back two consecutive victories, but Magneton was now panting heavily after enduring Rollout's impact and continuous battles.
Nurse Joy remained composed as ever and sent out her third Pokémon. "Go, Miltank!"
Another Pokémon that appeared gentle, but Ash knew well how troublesome it could be as both a tank and a disruptor. Its Milk Drink move also provided powerful recovery.
"Magneton, return!" Ash chose to preserve its strength. "Go, Muk!"
The Dark-type Muk entered the field, perfectly resisting Miltank's Normal-type attacks.
"Miltank, use Rollout!"
"Muk, use Sludge!"
The foul sludge collided with the rolling Miltank, both sides taking damage. Muk's Sticky Hold ability prevented its held item from being knocked away.
"Miltank, use Milk Drink!"
A glow flashed over Miltank's body as its stamina recovered significantly.
"We can't let it keep healing! Muk, use Poison Gas!"
A cloud of purple poison spread out. Miltank accidentally inhaled it and was poisoned.
"Now use Disable, block its Milk Drink!"
A strange light flashed in Muk's eyes. Miltank suddenly found itself unable to use Milk Drink anymore.
Nurse Joy frowned slightly. "Even so… Miltank, go all out with Body Slam!"
With heavy momentum, Miltank charged forward and slammed into Muk. Muk didn't dodge, taking the hit head-on. Its body wobbled, but thanks to its excellent durability, it held on.
Meanwhile, the poison continued to drain Miltank's stamina.
"Finish it, Muk, final Sludge Bomb!"
A concentrated sphere of toxic energy exploded on Miltank's body. Already weakened, Miltank finally collapsed.
"Miltank is unable to battle! Muk wins!"
The first half ended with Ash leading three to one. But both he and Nurse Joy knew that the real challenge had only just begun.
In Nurse Joy's hand still remained her strongest ace, Blissey, along with two other unrevealed Pokémon.
