Chapter 91 - Chapter 91: The Legend of the Crystal Onix

After leaving Mandarin Island North, where the disturbance had finally settled, Ash and his group continued sailing through the scattered islands of the Orange Archipelago aboard Lapras.

The sea breeze brushed against their faces, the sunlight was just right, Pikachu lay comfortably on Ash's shoulder, while Togepi chirped happily in Misty's arms.

Just as Ash was admiring the endless stretch of sea and sky, his Aura suddenly stirred slightly, sensing something unusual on the ocean surface.

He had Lapras move closer and discovered it was a sealed glass bottle with what seemed to be a note inside.

"A message in a bottle!" Misty said curiously.

Ash picked up the bottle, broke the wax seal, and took out the note. Written on it in childish handwriting were the words:

"Does anyone know where the Crystal Onix is? My brother and I are looking for it.

—Marissa"

"Crystal Onix?" Tracey adjusted his hat, showing interest. "I've heard of that legend. Supposedly, on one of the islands in the Orange Archipelago, there lives an Onix whose entire body is transparent and shines like crystal. It's an extremely rare mutation."

Ash's heart suddenly skipped a beat.

Crystal Onix!

He immediately recalled this unique encounter from the original story.

An Onix whose typing wasn't reversed, yet it wasn't afraid of water and instead feared fire. This was an opportunity that was nearly impossible to come by!

His eyes instantly lit up with excitement.

"It looks like we should go meet this mysterious Pokémon," Ash carefully stored the note, a confident smile appearing on his face. "Lapras, pick up the speed. We're heading to Sunburst Island!"

Based on the direction the bottle had drifted from and Ash's vague memory, they quickly arrived at Sunburst Island, famous for its glass craftsmanship.

Beautiful glass creations could be seen everywhere on the island, glittering brilliantly under the sunlight.

While asking around for information, they soon found the owner of the message in the bottle, a young girl named Marissa and her older brother Mateo. Mateo was a young glass artisan, but he was currently stuck in a creative block.

"Y-you know about the Crystal Onix?" Marissa asked excitedly when she saw the note in Ash's hand.

Mateo also looked at them with anticipation and explained, "The legend of the Crystal Onix has been passed down in our family. It's said to be incredibly beautiful, with a body like the purest crystal. I want to see it with my own eyes, to find inspiration to break through my creative block."

"That's exactly why we're here," Ash nodded. "We're searching for it too, and I'm sure it exists."

"Really? That's great!" Marissa cheered.

Hope reignited in Mateo's eyes as well. "Thank you! But we only know it might be in a cave somewhere near this island. We've never been able to find the exact location."

Faced with this problem, Tracey stepped forward confidently, pushing up his hat.

"This is where my partner comes in. Go, Marill!"

A blue, mouse-like Pokémon hopped out, its large, distinctive ears immediately catching attention.

"Marill has extremely sharp hearing," Tracey explained. "It can detect distant water currents, the resonance of rocks, even the faint vibrations caused by Pokémon activity. If the Crystal Onix really lives in a crystal cave, the sound waves produced by its unique body interacting with the environment will definitely be different from ordinary rocks. Marill, please listen carefully and find the clearest and most unique rock resonance on this island!"

"Marill!" Marill nodded, closing its eyes as its large ears rotated slightly like radar, capturing sound waves imperceptible to ordinary people. It tilted its head at times, focused deeply at others, guiding the group along rugged paths and the coastline.

After nearly an hour of careful searching, Marill suddenly stopped in front of what appeared to be an ordinary rock wall. Its ears trembled violently as it excitedly pointed toward the area behind it.

"Marill! Marill!"

"Is it inside here?" Ash's Aura also faintly sensed an unusual energy fluctuation behind the rock wall, something cooler and clearer than ordinary stone.

Mateo stepped forward to examine the rock wall carefully and soon discovered an entrance cleverly hidden behind vines.

"There's a cave here!"

The group pushed aside the vines, revealing a deep cave that faintly emitted a crystalline glow.

As they stepped inside, everyone was stunned by the sight before them.

The entire cave seemed to be formed from massive crystals, reflecting sunlight that filtered through cracks, casting dazzling, multicolored lights everywhere. It felt like stepping into a dreamlike wonderland.

And in the widest central area of the cave, a massive creature lay coiled.

Its body was entirely composed of transparent crystal, refracting brilliant light under the illumination. Each segment of its "rocky" body looked like a carefully carved diamond, both solid and breathtakingly beautiful.

It was the mysterious Crystal Onix.

"S-so beautiful…" Misty couldn't help but gasp.

"So this is the Crystal Onix… it's unbelievable!" Mateo trembled with excitement as he looked at the perfect "work of art," inspiration surging within him like a flood.

The Crystal Onix noticed the intruders. It raised its massive crystalline head and let out a deep roar that echoed throughout the cave, carrying a clear warning.

Ash observed it sharply, his mind rapidly analyzing.

"Its body is made of crystal, meaning its density and structure are different from ordinary rock… That suggests its resistance to physical impact is extremely high. And…" he recalled the key detail, "Water-type moves probably can't penetrate its smooth, cold surface. Instead, high temperatures from Fire-type moves can damage its crystal structure, creating an effect similar to thermal expansion and contraction!"

At that moment, Mateo, eager to verify his inspiration and truly connect with this mysterious Pokémon, sent out his partner.

"Go, Charmeleon! Use Ember!"

Charmeleon spat out small sparks, testing the Crystal Onix. What happened next was surprising. The sparks did not bounce off its crystalline body. Instead, the struck areas glowed faintly red, and the Crystal Onix let out a roar tinged with pain!

"As expected! It's weak to Fire-type moves!" Ash confirmed his theory.

Seeing this, Mateo's confidence grew even stronger.

"Charmeleon, let's go! Use Flamethrower!"

A blazing column of fire shot toward the Crystal Onix. Enraged, it swung its tail and used Rock Throw, sending countless crystal shards crashing toward Charmeleon while its massive body lunged forward.

"Charmeleon, dodge and use Metal Claw!"

Under Mateo's command, Charmeleon skillfully avoided the attacks. Its claws, gleaming with a metallic sheen, scraped against the Crystal Onix's body, producing a sharp grating sound and dealing solid damage.

The battle felt more like a clash of art and power. As Mateo directed Charmeleon, he carefully observed every movement of the Crystal Onix, every shift in the way light refracted across its body. The spark of inspiration in his eyes grew brighter and brighter.

In the end, Charmeleon landed a precise Fire Fang on the Crystal Onix's tail, dealing significant damage and bringing the battle to a close.

Mateo recalled his exhausted yet spirited Charmeleon and bowed deeply to the Crystal Onix.

"Thank you, Crystal Onix! I've found it! I've found the feeling I was searching for, something transparent and strong, yet burning with a fiery passion! My glass art can finally be reborn!"

The Crystal Onix seemed to understand his gratitude. It let out a low rumble, no longer filled with hostility.

At that moment, Ash stepped forward, his gaze firm.

"Mateo, thank you for letting me witness such an incredible battle. Now, I have a request."

He turned to the Crystal Onix.

"Mighty Crystal Onix, battle me! I want you to become my partner and travel with me to see a wider world!"

Mateo was momentarily stunned, then smiled with understanding and support.

"I understand. You helped me find it, and you're a strong Trainer. If you can capture it with your own strength, I have no objections. It deserves a more exciting adventure."

The Crystal Onix also sensed the powerful Aura and unwavering determination within Ash. It raised its head and let out a challenging roar, accepting the battle!

"Good!" Ash's eyes sharpened as he took out a Poké Ball. Instead of choosing a Fire-type advantage, he opted for an evenly matched opponent.

"I choose you, Giant Onix!"

With a flash of light, the enormous Onix Ash had caught at Mt. Hideaway appeared!

Its massive body was even larger than the Crystal Onix's, and as the two titans faced each other in the gleaming cave, the air was filled with overwhelming pressure.

"Onix, use Rock Throw!"

The Crystal Onix responded with Rock Throw as well. Both Onix controlled rocks and crystal shards, sending countless projectiles colliding and shattering midair like a rain of stone.

"Onix, charge through and use Bind!"

However, the Crystal Onix, with its relatively slimmer body and smooth surface, nimbly evaded the Bind. In the next moment, its tail, gleaming with a metallic shine, slammed into Giant Onix with a thunderous crash.

"Good! Onix, hold steady! Use Smack Down!"

Giant Onix roared as it gathered immense strength, hurling a massive rock that struck the Crystal Onix just as it attempted another Iron Tail!

"Now's the chance! While it's off balance, use Earthquake!"

Giant Onix stomped heavily, causing the entire crystal cave to tremble violently. The Ground-type attack was highly effective against the Rock-type Crystal Onix. It let out a painful cry as fine cracks began to appear across its crystal body.

"Finish it, Double-Edge!"

Giant Onix gathered all its strength and charged forward with unstoppable force, slamming into the Crystal Onix before it could recover from the Earthquake.

Boom!

The deafening impact echoed through the cave. The Crystal Onix was sent flying, crashing heavily into the crystal wall behind it before sliding down, completely unable to battle.

Ash took out an empty Poké Ball and threw it decisively.

The ball shook three times before emitting a crisp click.

Capture successful!

Ash stepped forward, picking up the Poké Ball as he spoke softly.

"Welcome to the team, Crystal Onix."

Mateo and Marissa walked over, sincerely congratulating him.

"Thank you, Ash," Mateo said with emotion. "You not only helped me find my inspiration, but also gave the Crystal Onix a better home. I believe that with you, it will shine even more brilliantly."

With their new companion, the Crystal Onix, and a journey full of rewards, Ash and his friends bid farewell to Mateo and his sister, leaving the beautiful crystal cave behind.

The adventure in the Orange Archipelago continued, and the next Gym awaited their arrival.
