Chapter 6 - Eyes That Learn

The hall didn't change.

The same dull lights.

The same sounds of impact.

The same cold air pressing down on everything.

---

But something about it felt different to Arin.

---

Not the place.

---

Him.

---

He stood near the empty space again, his guard raised.

No one had called him.

No one had instructed him.

---

Still—

He moved.

---

A step forward.

A shift in weight.

A turn.

---

He stopped.

---

No…

---

He reset.

---

Slower this time.

---

He lifted his guard again.

Focused on his stance.

---

Why am I moving like this?

---

That question lingered.

---

Yesterday—

He had moved to avoid being hit.

---

Today—

That wasn't enough.

---

He stepped again.

---

This time—

He paid attention.

---

His feet.

His balance.

His breathing.

---

Each movement felt awkward.

Unnatural.

---

"…Too stiff."

---

A voice came from the side.

---

Arin turned.

---

The boy who had been sitting on the rooftop ledge yesterday now stood a few steps away.

---

Calm expression.

Sharp eyes.

---

"…You're watching me?" Arin asked.

---

"Not really."

---

The boy stepped closer.

---

"You're just easy to read."

---

Arin frowned slightly.

---

"…What does that mean?"

---

The boy stopped in front of him.

---

"It means I know what you're going to do."

---

A pause.

---

"Before you do it."

---

Arin's grip tightened slightly.

---

"…That's not possible."

---

The boy tilted his head slightly.

---

"Move."

---

Arin hesitated.

---

"…What?"

---

"Move like you were."

---

Silence.

---

Arin slowly stepped forward.

---

Then shifted his stance.

---

Prepared.

---

The moment he did—

---

The boy moved.

---

Fast.

---

Too fast.

---

Arin's eyes widened—

---

A hand stopped inches from his guard.

---

Right where his face would have been.

---

He froze.

---

"…See?" the boy said calmly.

---

Arin's heartbeat rose slightly.

---

"…How did you—"

---

"You told me."

---

Arin blinked.

---

"…What?"

---

The boy stepped back.

---

"Your shoulders."

---

A pause.

---

"Your feet."

---

Another.

---

"Your breathing."

---

Arin stared at him.

---

"…That's enough to predict someone?"

---

"Yes."

---

No hesitation.

---

"No," Arin replied.

---

A brief silence.

---

Then—

---

"Again," the boy said.

---

Arin didn't argue this time.

---

He moved.

---

Carefully.

---

Trying to change something.

---

Anything.

---

The boy watched.

---

Then moved again.

---

Different angle.

---

Same result.

---

Stopped just short of impact.

---

"…Still obvious."

---

Arin clenched his jaw.

---

"…Then what am I supposed to do?"

---

The boy looked at him for a moment.

---

"…Stop deciding too early."

---

Arin frowned.

---

"…That doesn't make sense."

---

"It will."

---

A pause.

---

"Eventually."

---

That wasn't helpful.

---

But something about it stuck.

---

Deciding too early…

---

The boy turned slightly.

---

"Watch."

---

Arin blinked.

---

"…Watch what?"

---

Instead of answering—

---

The boy stepped into the open space.

---

Another student approached him.

---

Without words—

They began.

---

A spar.

---

The opponent attacked first.

Fast.

Direct.

---

The boy didn't react immediately.

---

He waited.

---

Just a fraction longer than expected.

---

Then moved.

---

Clean.

---

Minimal.

---

No wasted motion.

---

He didn't dodge early.

---

He didn't commit too soon.

---

Each movement happened at the exact moment it needed to.

---

Nothing extra.

---

Nothing forced.

---

Arin's eyes followed closely.

---

He's not predicting…

---

He's reacting… but not like me…

---

Another attack came.

---

The boy shifted.

---

Then countered.

---

The opponent stumbled.

---

The fight ended quickly.

---

Clean.

---

Controlled.

---

The boy stepped back.

---

No celebration.

No expression.

---

Just calm.

---

He turned back to Arin.

---

"…You see it?"

---

Arin hesitated.

---

"…You didn't move until the last second."

---

"Wrong."

---

Arin blinked.

---

"…Then what?"

---

The boy stepped closer again.

---

"I didn't decide until the last second."

---

Silence.

---

"…That's different?"

---

"Yes."

---

A pause.

---

"When you decide too early…"

---

He pointed slightly at Arin's stance.

---

"You lock yourself into that movement."

---

Another step.

---

"You become predictable."

---

Arin's eyes narrowed slightly.

---

"…So I should just… not decide?"

---

The boy shook his head.

---

"…You prepare."

---

A pause.

---

"…But you don't commit."

---

That—

Made more sense.

---

A little.

---

"…Try again," the boy said.

---

Arin raised his guard.

---

This time—

He didn't focus on moving first.

---

He focused on waiting.

---

Watching.

---

The boy stepped in.

---

A strike came.

---

Arin's body reacted—

---

But he held it.

---

Just slightly.

---

Then moved.

---

Late.

---

But cleaner.

---

The strike missed.

---

Barely.

---

"…Better."

---

The word came without emotion.

---

Again.

---

Another attack.

---

Arin waited.

---

Then moved.

---

Still not perfect.

---

Still rough.

---

But different.

---

Less forced.

---

More natural.

---

His breathing steadied slightly.

---

His movements slowed—

---

But became sharper.

---

Then—

---

A strike slipped through.

---

Hit.

---

Pain shot through his arm.

---

He flinched.

---

"…Too late."

---

Arin exhaled sharply.

---

"…So which is it?"

---

A hint of frustration slipped through.

---

"…Too early or too late?"

---

The boy looked at him.

---

"…That's what you figure out."

---

Arin stared at him.

---

No answer.

---

No explanation.

---

Just that.

---

Figure it out…

---

The same pattern.

---

No one gives the full answer.

---

They only point.

---

And expect him to reach it.

---

Arin lowered his guard slightly.

---

Then raised it again.

---

"…Again."

---

The word came from him this time.

---

The boy didn't react.

---

He simply stepped forward.

---

And the pressure returned.

---

But this time—

---

Arin didn't rush.

---

Didn't panic.

---

Didn't decide too early.

---

And didn't freeze too late.

---

He stayed in between.

---

Uncertain.

---

But learning.

---

Watching.

---

Adapting.

---

The hall echoed with movement.

---

But for Arin—

---

Everything narrowed down to one thing.

---

Timing.

---

Not just when to move.

---

But when to decide.

---

And somewhere in that space—

---

Between instinct and thought—

---

His eyes began to change.

---

Not in appearance.

---

But in what they saw.

---

Patterns.

Gaps.

Possibilities.

---

And for the first time—

---

He wasn't just surviving the fight.

---

He was beginning to understand it.
