“Chapter 1: Ordinary days”

Lisa's POV

I trudged through the school gates, my backpack weighing me down like a ton of bricks . Another boring day in paradise. The sun was shining, birds were singing, and I was dragging myself to class . Why couldn't today be like those perfect days in my dreams? You know, where everything's just... right?

The street in which I was walking on to my school were alive, with vendors calling out their daily specials – fresh fruits, spicy jollof rice, and the sweet scent of sugarcane . I breathed it all in, feeling a tiny spark of excitement. Maybe today wouldn't be so bad after all .

Susan was waiting by our lockers, her bright smile a stark contrast to my gloomy mood . Her hair was perfectly styled, and she looked like she just stepped out of a magazine.

"Hey, girl! What's wrong?" she asked, eyeing my scowl.

I sighed, letting my backpack slide off my shoulders. "Just tired, I guess."

Susan raised an eyebrow, her expression saying, "I don't buy it." "Tired? Or just tired of David ignoring you?"

My eyes widened, and I glanced around nervously. "Shh! Not so loud!"

Susan chuckled and leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I'm just saying, it's been weeks since he last talked to you. Maybe you should move on?"

Easy for her to say. David was the star quarterback, and I was just... me 🤷‍♀️. But there was something about him – his piercing blue eyes, his charming smile... I felt like I was invisible whenever he was around, yet he was all I could think about.

As we walked to class, I spotted David and Steven chatting by the water fountain . My heart skipped a beat, like it always did when I saw him . Steven caught my eye and waved. I waved back, feeling a flutter in my chest .

Susan followed my gaze, a knowing look on her face . "Steven's got a thing for you, you know.

I rolled my eyes, dismissing the idea. "He's just being nice."

But as we passed by, Steven called out, "Hey, Lisa! Want to sit with us at lunch?"

David looked up, his eyes locking onto mine for a brief moment . I felt a spark, like a tiny jolt of electricity .

"Uh, sure," I stammered, trying to sound casual .

Susan grinned, linking her arm with mine . "Sounds like a plan."

As we walked away, I felt a strange tingling sensation in my fingers . Like pins and needles, but... different. I shook it off, attributing it to the excitement of sitting with David .

We walked into class, and Tisha waved us over to our seats . "Hey, guys! What's up?"

Susan filled her in on the lunch plans, and Tisha's eyes lit up . "Ooh, David's crew? Score!"

I shot her a warning look, but she just winked .

The rest of the morning dragged on, with me stealing glances at David whenever I thought no one was looking . When the lunch bell finally rang , I felt a rush of excitement .

As we headed to the cafeteria, Susan nudged me . "You okay? You seem... weird."

I shrugged, feeling the tingling sensation again . "Just a bit... weird, I guess."

We got our food and joined David's table. He smiled when he saw us coming , and my heart skipped another beat . The conversation flowed easily, with Steven cracking jokes and Tisha laughing her head off .

But amidst the laughter, I felt... different. Like something was brewing beneath the surface .

As we finished lunch, David turned to me and said, "Hey, Lisa? Can I talk to you for a sec?"

My heart soared . What did he want to say?
