Chapter 2 - Chapter 2; Pathfinders and Shadows

The ground beneath my feet fractured as I ran, glowing cracks spiderwebbing out from where the guardian beast's massive claws struck down. I could hear its roar echoing through the purple sky – a sound that vibrated through my chest so hard I thought my teeth might rattle loose. The crystal fireflies were already through the rift, their tiny lights blinking frantically in my bedroom like warning beacons.

Kiete kure, kiete kure! (Disappear, disappear!) I thought, willing the rift to stay open just long enough for me to get back. My breath came in ragged gasps, and the strange energy that had made me feel so alive moments ago now burned in my muscles like I'd been running for hours.

"Minna-san – hashitte imasu! (I'm running!)" I yelled into the microphone I'd clipped to my shirt, my voice cracking. The camera was still pointed at me, and I could see my face on the small monitor – pale, eyes wide with panic, my dark hair sticking to my forehead with sweat. "That thing is ookii – way bigger than I thought!"

My viewer count had exploded to 1,200 and was climbing by the second. Donations were pouring in so fast the alerts blocked out half the chat, but I could still make out snippets:

[OniGamerX]: RIZU-KUN HAYAKU! (HURRY!)

[RiftTengu]: THE RIFT WON'T HOLD IF IT GETS TOO CLOSE!

[HoshiMiko]: I'M RECORDING EVERYTHING – THESE CLIPS ARE GOING TO CHANGE EVERYTHING!

[NekoChef]: KORE WA HONMONO DE SHINJIRAREN! (I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS REAL!)

A bolt of lightning shot from the beast's wings, striking the rock spire I'd just been examining. It shattered into a million glowing pieces that rained down like glittering shrapnel. I ducked and weaved through the falling debris, one piece grazing my shoulder and leaving a warm, tingling mark instead of a cut.

Weird, I thought, even as another bolt lit up the sky above me. It didn't hurt…

I was ten feet from the rift when the beast let out a deafening shriek and lunged forward. Its massive paw slammed down right where I'd been standing a second earlier, sending shockwaves through the bone path that threw me off balance. I stumbled forward, my hands catching on the edge of the rift as I half-fell, half-dived back into my bedroom.

The moment my body cleared the threshold, the rift flickered violently. The guardian beast's head poked through for just an instant – its eyes were like twin suns, burning with golden light that made me cover my face. Then with a sound like breaking glass, the rift slammed shut, leaving nothing but my plain white wall behind.

I collapsed onto my tatami floor, gasping for air, my heart still hammering against my ribs. The room was quiet again – nothing but the hum of my computer fans and the soft pururu of my stream alerts. I pushed myself up on my elbows and looked at the monitor.

Viewer count: 3,742.

Chat was moving so fast it was just a blur of Japanese characters, with a growing number of English messages mixed in as word spread. A single donation sat at the top of the screen – ¥100,000 from RiftTengu, with a message in both languages:

"You're safe now. Don't try to open it again – not yet. The guardian only attacks those who venture too deep before they're ready. I'll contact you privately. Keep the stream running – tell them what you saw."

I stared at the screen, my mind racing. Who is RiftTengu? How did they know what that creature was?

"Minna-san…" I said, my voice still shaky as I leaned into the mic. "It's… it's closed. I'm okay. Just… a little shaken up."

The alerts went wild – hundreds of messages flooding in, asking if I was hurt, if the rift would come back, what that place was. I ran my hand through my hair and tried to collect my thoughts, noticing that the silver glow from earlier was still faintly visible on my fingertips.

"Let me start from the beginning," I said, sitting up straight and adjusting the camera so it framed me properly. "I was editing highlights from tonight's yakitori stream when I saw the wall shimmering. I thought it was a trick of the lights at first – I've been pulling too many all-nighters lately, between stream work and my kagaku (science) classes at Waseda."

I explained everything step by step – the way the wall had folded open, the smell of rain and sakura, the upward-flowing rivers and the crystal fireflies. I showed them my shoulder where the debris had grazed me – the mark was already fading into a silver line that looked almost like a tattoo.

"See this?" I said, holding up my arm to the camera. "It doesn't hurt at all. In fact… I feel stronger than I have in a long time. Like I have more energy than I know what to do with."

As I spoke, my viewer count crossed 5,000. A notification popped up on Twitch – my stream had been featured on the front page under "Just Chatting," with a banner that read: "Japanese Streamer Discovers Mysterious Realm Live!"

My phone started buzzing nonstop – texts from my classmates asking if the rumors were true, emails from Twitch support wanting to verify the stream content, even a message from a journalist at Nikkei Tech. But the one that caught my eye was a direct message on Twitch from RiftTengu:

"I know what that place is. The Rifted Realms aren't just one world – they're thousands, all connected by pathways that open and close at random. Most people never find them. You did. That means you're a 'Pathfinder' – someone who can see and travel between the realms safely. But you need to be careful. There are others who know about the realms, and not all of them have good intentions. Meet me tomorrow at 3 PM at the sakura tree behind Ueno Park's National Museum. Come alone, and bring your streaming gear – I have something to show you."

I read the message twice, my stomach doing flips. Meet a stranger in a park? That sounds dangerous. But they knew about the guardian beast… they might be able to explain what's happening to me.

"Minna," I said, looking back at the camera. "I've just gotten a message from someone who says they know what that place was. They want to meet me tomorrow to talk. I'm not sure if I should go – but honestly… I need answers. I can't just pretend this never happened."

[TechSakura]: Kiken da yo! (It's dangerous!)

[HoshiMiko]: Go with someone! Take a friend!

[UdonLover_01]: Rizu-kun wa itsumo yasashii kara… chanto ki o tsukete! (You're always so kind, Rizu-kun… be careful!)

[RiftTengu]: I won't hurt you. You'll understand why when you see what I have to show you.

I took a deep breath and nodded at the camera. "I'll be careful, I promise. And… I think I'm going to keep streaming this journey. Whatever happens next, I want to share it with all of you. This isn't just my secret anymore – it's something we're all seeing together."

I checked the time – 4:23 AM. The sun would be rising soon, and I had a morning class at 8. But there was no way I'd be able to sleep now. My mind was racing with questions: What are the Rifted Realms? Why did the wall open for me? Who else knows about them?

"Okay, minna-san," I said, giving the camera a small smile despite everything. "I think I need to wrap up this stream for now. I've got class in a few hours, and I need to try to process… well, all of this. But I'll be back tomorrow – maybe even stream the meeting if I think it's safe. Thank you all for watching, for worrying about me, for believing me when I know this sounds crazy."

I paused, looking at the thousands of viewers still tuned in, at the messages of support flooding the chat. For two years, I'd streamed to a tiny group of loyal fans who loved my cooking. Now… now everything was different.

"One more thing," I said, leaning forward. "If any of you have ever seen something you can't explain – something that doesn't fit in our world – maybe you're not crazy either. Maybe there are more doors out there than we think."

I hit the "end stream" button, and the screen went black. The silence of my apartment felt heavy after hours of chat alerts and the roar of the guardian beast. I stood up and walked to the wall where the rift had been, pressing my palm against the drywall again. It was cool now, solid as any other wall. But I could still feel it – a faint hum just beneath the surface, waiting.

I grabbed my laptop and pulled up the stream VOD, scrolling through the footage. Every second was real – no edits, no tricks. The glowing moss, the upward rivers, the beast with wings of stained glass… it was all there, captured in crisp detail. I saved the file to three different drives, then uploaded a short clip to Twitter with the caption: "I said I made okonomiyaki on stream tonight. I lied. I found something better. #RiftedRealms"

Within minutes, the tweet was trending in Japan, with thousands of retweets and comments. People were calling it the stream of the century, others were saying it was the best CGI hoax they'd ever seen. But I knew the truth – and soon, I'd find out if RiftTengu did too.

I changed out of my sweat-soaked clothes and made myself a cup of green tea, my hands still slightly shaking. Hana jumped onto my lap, purring loudly as she curled up against my chest. Even she seemed to sense that something had changed – she kept staring at the wall, her ears twitching like she could hear the same hum I could.

As the first rays of sun streamed through my window, painting the room in warm gold light, I pulled out my notebook and started writing down everything I could remember – the smell, the sounds, the way the energy had felt in my body. I'd always been a practical person, someone who believed in science and facts. But now I was staring at a blank wall that had once been a doorway to another world, and I knew nothing would ever be practical again.

My phone buzzed – another message from RiftTengu: "The realms choose their Pathfinders for a reason. Tomorrow, you'll start to understand yours. Get some rest – you'll need your strength."

I set the phone down and looked at the wall one more time. Whatever waited for me in Ueno Park, whatever secrets the Rifted Realms held… I was ready to find out. And I'd be streaming every second of it.
