Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Three Dollars and a Battle

The notification hit at 10:17 PM.

Ryan had been in his hotel room — he'd given his parents the apartment for the night, taken a room for himself — when he opened TikTok out of habit and stopped cold.

He recognized the face before the username loaded.

The outdoor streamer from the parking lot.

She was losing.

@ChloeGoesOutside vs @CuteLilPiggy. Battle meter: 74% in Piggy's favor. Under two minutes remaining. On screen, Chloe was keeping her expression carefully neutral, but her hands were flat on her desk in the way hands went flat when someone was holding themselves together.

**[SYSTEM — LIVE BATTLE MISSION ACTIVE]**

*Help @ChloeGoesOutside win the current battle.*

*Reward: Randomized skill unlock.*

*Time remaining: 1:52.*

Ryan opened the payment screen. He hit the platform's top-up limit in under sixty seconds and sat with one dollar forty and eighty-nine seconds left on the clock.

He bought three Super Rockets. Held his thumb over the send button.

*She doesn't know who's doing this. She'll never know.*

He sent them all at once.

The screen went gold. Every platform animation fired simultaneously. The battle meter didn't drift toward fifty — it kept moving, accelerating past the midpoint with the momentum of something that had decided.

On stream, Chloe's hand went to her mouth. "Oh my —"

Ryan bought two Galaxy Bombs with his remaining balance. The meter hit ninety-two. Piggy's six-minute lead dissolved completely.

**WINNER: @ChloeGoesOutside**

On stream, Chloe pressed her palms flat against her desk and just breathed. The chat was flooding. Her hands were shaking slightly. She looked directly at the camera with the expression of someone who had needed this more than she'd been willing to admit.

"LordVicious," she said, when she could form words. "Whoever you are — I don't have the right words for tonight."

Ryan spent his remaining balance sending individual gifts after the win, one by one, the way you paid attention to something when the score was already settled. Her chat noticed immediately.

*he's not doing it for the points anymore. he just wants her to have it.*

He closed the app.

He read it three more times.

Thirty percent of the largest investment conglomerate in the world. He owned it because he'd spent three dollars and fourteen cents on a TikTok battle for a stranger.

His phone buzzed. Unknown number.

*Mr. Mercer. We've had mutual acquaintances longer than you know. I'd like to speak. — M.S.*

Forty seconds later: *I've been watching your building. Your parents arrived Tuesday. Good people. Get some sleep.*

Ryan crossed to the curtains. Open four inches.

He closed them completely and stood in the dark.

*Watching my building. Knows my parents arrived.*

He typed: *Who are you?*

The reply came in eight seconds: *Someone who's been waiting for you to be ready. You're ready now. — Marcus Shaw.*

**[SYSTEM: Phase 2 Missions unlocking.]**

*WARNING: Failure at any tier forfeits ALL prior rewards at 2x rate. No extensions.*

Ryan looked at the closed curtains.

Three dollars. Thirty percent of a two-trillion-dollar institution. A stranger in the dark who knew his parents' arrival date.

He went to sleep.

Tomorrow, he was going to find Marcus Shaw.

And he was going to ask a man who watched hotel windows from across the street exactly what he thought he was doing.

> **[Hook]** *At 3:17 AM, Ryan's phone lit up with one final message from Chloe Parker: "Okay so I looked you up. ChloeGoesOutside. You left the TikTok gift records public. I know it was you. I know your name. I'm not going to post it — but I think we need to talk." She paused, then added: "Also, thank you. I really needed that win tonight."*
