Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Scent Of Power

Kai didn't notice it at first. The morning was calm, the kind of calm that made the ocean's waves seem almost like a lullaby. But something prickled at the edge of his senses—a faint disturbance, almost imperceptible, like a whisper of electricity brushing through the air.

He froze mid-step, his instincts screaming at him. His power, subtle yet insidious, hummed beneath his skin. He felt the residue of other abilities nearby, some blocked, some faintly struggling to reach him. But one presence, one scent of power, stood out. It wasn't just anyone.

It was him.

Leon Asterian.

Half a world away, yet closer than Kai could have imagined. Somehow, his father—his tyrant father, master of lightning and control—had sensed him. Even in hiding, Kai's blood called to Leon like a beacon. A tether no distance could sever.

Kai's breath hitched. He had always known this connection existed. Every Asterian could feel the presence of another when they were powerful enough. But to be hunted by his own father… it carried a weight heavier than any enemy's bullet.

He moved quickly, quietly. Outside, the village seemed ordinary, oblivious to the storm that could descend at any moment. But Kai's mind raced. He was an assassin. He had evaded some of the world's most dangerous hunters. Yet he had never faced Leon—never faced the full force of his father's attention.

The sensation grew stronger, prickling along his veins. It was a pulse, a signal, a claim: I know where you are.

Kai shut his eyes and reached inward. He focused, letting the part of his power that canceled abilities extend just enough to mask his aura. He had always been able to hide from other powers, but Leon was different. His father wasn't just strong; he was a storm. Blue lightning ran in his veins, and it resonated with Kai's own blood.

A bead of sweat formed at Kai's temple. This was the first time he had felt the full weight of his lineage pressing down on him from afar. He had been careful. Invisible. Yet his father, even without being here, had felt him—smelled him, in a way only the Asterians could.

And that meant danger was closer than ever.

Kai's fingers twitched toward the hidden blade at his belt, his mind racing through contingencies. He had two years of freedom, two years of quiet life, and now it was threatened in a single heartbeat. The waves outside continued to crash, but their rhythm felt wrong, off-balance. He wasn't just hiding from the world anymore—he was hiding from the man who had made the world bend to his will.

A warning, sharp as a blade, echoed in his mind: Running won't save you, Kai. You belong to me.

Kai swallowed hard, forcing his panic down. He had chosen this life, and he would fight to protect it. But deep down, a cold knot of fear settled in his chest. If Leon had sensed him now, if his father had caught even a whiff of his power, there was no knowing how quickly the storm would reach New Zealand.

He wasn't just a rogue assassin anymore. He was a hunted Asterian.
