Chapter 4 - First Hunt

Over the following two weeks, Kai turned Dimension Zero into his training ground.

Every dawn, before the grey light filtered through Ashen Keep's walls, he was already outside, moving through the wasteland with a predator's focus. His routine was brutal and unvarying: hunt, kill, absorb, grow. Repeat. The System tracked everything—essence gained, combat efficiency, kill count, growth trajectory. The numbers climbed with a consistency that would have been impossible in any higher dimension.

Early Forging stage. It had taken him a decade to reach this level in Dimension 3. Here, with the System's broken but brilliantly effective Absorb ability, he had done it in two weeks. The cultivation wasn't elegant—there was no structured training, no refined technique, no master guiding his essence flow. It was raw, primal power, hammered into shape through violence and desperation. But it was power, and in Dimension Zero, power was the only currency that mattered.

His fighting style had evolved to match. Without access to the Thornveil family's refined techniques, Kai had developed something new—a brutal, adaptive combat system built around the Analyze ability. Before every fight, the System mapped his opponent's weaknesses, predicted their attack patterns, and calculated optimal strike zones. Kai would then execute with surgical precision. It wasn't beautiful. It was effective.

On the eighth day, he killed a Void Stalker—a creature that could phase in and out of reality, making it nearly impossible to hit with conventional attacks. The System had identified a 0.3-second window when the Stalker solidified between phase shifts. Kai had waited for the window, planted his feet, and driven a makeshift spear through the creature's core. The Stalker had dissolved into motes of dark light, and Kai had screamed with the effort of holding his position as the creature's death throes tore at his essence.

On the twelfth day, he found the cave.

It was hidden behind a rockfall at the base of a massive cliff formation, the entrance barely wide enough for a person to squeeze through. Inside, the air was different—warmer, tinged with an energy that made Kai's essence channels hum. His System went wild, panels flashing open faster than he could read them.

Kai entered the cave.

The passage widened after fifty meters, opening into a vast underground chamber lit by phosphorescent crystals embedded in the walls. The light was blue-green and gentle, casting soft shadows that made the space feel almost peaceful. Almost. The murals on the walls destroyed any sense of peace.

They covered every surface—scenes of a civilization that had clearly been far more advanced than anything Kai had seen in Dimension 3. Towers that pierced clouds. People flying between structures on bridges of light. Battles against creatures that dwarfed anything in Dimension Zero. And at the center of every scene, a single figure—tall, robed, with eyes that glowed with an inner light that seemed to pulse from the stone itself.

"The First Sovereign," Kai breathed. He recognized the figure from the fragmented memories that had filtered through the System during his initial bonding. The being who had created the System itself.

The murals told a story. The First Sovereign had not been a conqueror—that much was clear. The scenes showed the Sovereign building, connecting, protecting. Bridges between dimensions. Treaties between warring realms. A grand design that spanned the entire multiverse. But then the tone shifted. Dark figures appeared. War. The dimensions themselves began to crack and shatter, reality fracturing under the strain of conflict. The final mural showed the First Sovereign alone, standing before a vast darkness that stretched across the horizon, one hand raised in defiance, the other holding something that looked like a mirror.

"The Sovereign System," Kai said, understanding dawning. "The mirror. That's what this is."

He pressed his palm against the mural. The crystal light flared, and for an instant—just an instant—he felt a presence. Ancient. Weary. And desperately hopeful.

Then it was gone, and Kai was alone in the blue-green light of the chamber, his hand tingling and his heart racing with the certainty that he had stumbled onto something far larger than his personal vendetta.

The System pulsed once, a new notification appearing.

The Null. A new name for a new nightmare. As if Dimension Zero, the Obsidian Hand, and his own survival weren't enough to worry about.

Kai made his way back to Ashen Keep as the grey light began to fade. His mind was churning with questions, but one thing was clear: the path forward wasn't just about escaping Dimension Zero. It was about understanding what the First Sovereign had known—and what had been lost.

He needed to find the Shattered Spire. He needed to reach the gate. And he needed to do it before whatever was hunting Dimension Zero's inhabitants found him first.
