Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The Direction He Chose

The night passed slower than usual, not because of restlessness, but because Ayan's thoughts had begun to take a more defined shape, no longer scattered fragments reacting to events, but something closer to a direction. He lay on the bed, eyes open, staring at the ceiling as faint light from the city slipped through the window, his mind replaying everything from the forest, the guild, and the conversation with the manager, but instead of circling endlessly, the thoughts began to settle into something more structured.

It was no longer just about surviving day to day.

That phase had ended.

Now, it was about understanding the rules of this world before they crushed him under their weight.

He turned his head slightly, his gaze shifting toward Aelira, who lay beside him, her presence as quiet as always, her breathing steady, her expression calm even in rest. For a moment, he simply watched her, not out of curiosity, but out of something closer to awareness. The more time he spent around her, the more he realized how unnatural her composure was, not in the sense of being cold, but in the sense of being unaffected.

Even after everything they had seen.

Even after the creatures in the forest.

Even after the guild's reaction.

She hadn't changed.

"…You already know something."

The thought surfaced again, clearer this time.

Not suspicion.

Not yet.

But certainty.

Ayan exhaled slowly and closed his eyes, pushing the thought aside for now. There were more immediate things to deal with, and if he let himself get distracted by something he couldn't confirm, it would only slow him down.

Morning came quietly, the faint sounds of movement from the inn below reaching the room as the city began to wake. Ayan sat up slowly, his body still carrying the lingering soreness from the previous fights, but it no longer bothered him the way it had before. It had become familiar, expected even, a reminder that he was still moving forward.

He reached for the pouch beside him, opening it slightly and counting again.

Ten silver.

Five from the kobold quest.

Five from the guild reward.

The number felt more stable than before.

But not comfortable.

"…Enough for now."

He muttered quietly.

Enough to think.

Enough to act.

But not enough to relax.

Aelira stirred slightly beside him, her eyes opening without hesitation as she sat up, her gaze immediately settling on him. "You're awake early," she said softly.

Ayan gave a small nod.

"Couldn't sleep much."

Aelira studied him for a moment before asking, "Still thinking about the forest?"

Ayan didn't answer immediately.

Because that wasn't the full truth.

"…Not just that."

He stood up slowly, stretching slightly as he walked toward the window, his gaze shifting toward the city below.

"I've been thinking about what comes next."

Aelira followed his movement with her eyes, her expression calm but attentive.

"And?"

Ayan rested his hand lightly against the frame of the window.

"If I keep taking normal quests… I'll only grow at the same pace as everyone else."

He paused.

"…And that's not enough."

The words felt heavier than before.

Because now, he understood what he was comparing himself to.

Not other adventurers.

But—

What was coming.

Aelira tilted her head slightly.

"You think you need to move faster."

It wasn't a question.

Ayan nodded.

"…Yeah."

Because whatever was happening in the forest—

Wasn't slowing down.

They left the inn shortly after, the morning air still fresh as the city slowly filled with movement, merchants opening their stalls, adventurers preparing for their tasks, and the usual rhythm of life returning. But this time, Ayan didn't head straight to the guild. Instead, he walked through the streets more deliberately, his eyes scanning, not just observing, but searching.

For something different.

Something overlooked.

He stopped briefly at a small information stall, where an older man sat reading from a worn-out book, his posture relaxed, his presence almost blending into the surroundings. Ayan approached, his steps steady as he spoke.

"I'm looking for information."

The man glanced up, his eyes narrowing slightly before he replied, "That depends on what kind."

Ayan didn't hesitate.

"Unusual monster activity."

The man paused.

His expression changed slightly.

"…You're not the first to ask that."

Ayan's gaze sharpened.

"What do you know?"

The man leaned back slightly, closing the book in his hands as he spoke more carefully.

"There have been reports. Not official ones, not all of them. Travelers talk. Merchants talk. Things moving in places they shouldn't be."

He paused briefly.

"And not just one type."

Ayan felt his thoughts align again.

"…Different species."

The man nodded.

"Exactly."

Ayan exhaled slowly.

"Where?"

The man studied him for a moment.

As if deciding something.

Then—

"North-east of the city. Not too far, but far enough that people avoid it now."

Ayan nodded once.

"That's enough."

He turned without hesitation, stepping away as his direction became clearer, his thoughts already moving ahead.

Aelira walked beside him, her gaze resting on him for a moment before she spoke.

"You're going there."

Again—

Not a question.

Ayan gave a small nod.

"…Yeah."

Because that was where the pattern led.

Because that was where the answers were.

They didn't return to the guild.

Not this time.

Because what he was looking for—

Wasn't on a board.

The path toward the outskirts felt different now, not unfamiliar, but more deliberate, every step taken with purpose rather than reaction. Ayan's grip tightened slightly as they moved, not from fear, but from awareness, because this time, he wasn't following instructions.

He was choosing the direction himself.

And that carried its own weight.

As they approached the edge of the city, the walls rising behind them, the forest stretching ahead once more, Ayan slowed slightly, his gaze narrowing as he spoke.

"This isn't like before."

Aelira responded calmly.

"No."

Ayan exhaled.

"Before, I went where the quests told me."

He paused.

"…Now I'm going where the problem is."

The difference felt significant.

Because this time—

There was no guarantee.

No structured reward.

No safety net.

Just—

Him.

And whatever waited ahead.

They stepped into the forest once more, the air shifting immediately, the sounds of the city fading behind them as the quiet of the trees took over. Ayan's senses sharpened instinctively, his movements slowing, his gaze scanning more carefully than before.

And as they moved deeper—

That same feeling returned.

Something—

Was wrong.

Ayan stopped.

Not because he saw something.

But because he felt it.

The silence.

The absence.

The weight in the air.

"…It's worse."

He muttered quietly.

Because compared to before—

This place felt more disturbed.

More active.

Aelira stepped slightly closer, her gaze shifting around the area before settling forward.

"You're right."

Ayan took a slow breath, his grip tightening slightly as he moved again, slower now, more cautious, his mind fully focused.

Because now—

There was no doubt left.

He wasn't chasing rumors anymore.

He was walking directly into something real.

And as that realization settled in—

One thought remained clear.

Whatever he was about to find—

Would change everything again.
