Chapter 74 - Chapter 74: Recognition

Night settled quietly across the land.

The last traces of sunlight disappeared behind the distant horizon, leaving the world beneath a cold silver glow from the moon above. The forest surrounding the road had grown calmer compared to the corrupted regions near the ridge, the air cleaner, lighter, no longer carrying the unnatural pressure of distorted evolution.

But despite the peaceful surroundings—

Ayan's thoughts remained restless.

The network reacted like it recognized you.

Those words repeated endlessly in his mind.

Not because they sounded dramatic.

But because of how calmly Aelira had said them.

As if to her—

That possibility was entirely real.

Ayan walked silently beside her for several minutes, the only sounds around them being the soft crunch of dirt beneath their footsteps and the occasional movement of leaves in the wind.

Then finally—

"…Recognized me how?"

Aelira glanced toward him briefly.

"…I don't know."

Ayan frowned slightly.

"…You keep saying that."

"…Because it's true."

Her voice remained calm.

"…There are things even I do not fully understand."

Ayan looked ahead again.

For some reason—

That answer bothered him less than before.

Maybe because after everything he had seen, the idea that even Aelira lacked complete understanding no longer felt impossible.

The world itself seemed more complicated than either of them originally thought.

"…So what now?"

He asked quietly.

"…We just follow those traces until we find the real source?"

Aelira remained silent briefly.

"…Eventually."

Ayan narrowed his eyes slightly.

"…That doesn't sound reassuring."

"…Because it isn't."

The answer came immediately.

Ayan let out a slow breath.

"…At least you're honest."

A faint silence followed.

Then unexpectedly—

Aelira spoke again.

"…You are changing faster than expected."

Ayan glanced toward her.

"…You said that before."

"…Not like this."

Her crimson eyes remained fixed forward.

"…Before, you adapted to survive."

"…Now…"

She paused slightly.

"…You are beginning to influence the process itself."

Ayan's chest tightened slightly.

Because honestly—

He had felt it too.

The way he understood the network now.

The way he sensed distortions.

The way his instincts reacted to things he should not naturally comprehend.

It no longer felt like normal growth.

It felt—

Connected.

"…You think that's dangerous."

Aelira's silence answered first.

Then—

"Yes."

Ayan lowered his gaze slightly.

"…For me?"

Aelira looked toward him directly.

"…For everything."

The words settled heavily.

Ayan remained quiet after that.

Because he didn't know how to respond.

Part of him wanted to reject the idea entirely.

But another part—

The part that had stood against the false core—

Understood exactly what she meant.

He had changed.

And not naturally.

A cold wind passed through the trees around them as they continued walking deeper into the night.

Eventually the forest path widened slightly, opening into a small clearing where the remains of an abandoned stone structure rested near the roadside. Time and weather had worn most of it down, leaving behind only fragments of walls and collapsed pillars overtaken by moss and vines.

Aelira stopped.

"…We'll rest here tonight."

Ayan looked around briefly before nodding.

Honestly—

His body desperately needed it.

The moment he sat against one of the broken stone walls, exhaustion hit him harder than expected. His muscles ached constantly now that the adrenaline from battle had fully faded, and several wounds across his body still burned despite already beginning to heal slowly.

Aelira crouched beside him quietly.

"…Hold still."

Ayan frowned slightly.

"…What are you—"

Before he finished speaking, her fingers lightly touched the wound across his shoulder.

A soft crimson glow appeared briefly.

Warm.

Gentle.

The pain faded almost immediately.

Ayan blinked slightly.

"…You could do that this whole time?"

Aelira's expression remained calm.

"…Yes."

Ayan stared at her for several seconds.

"…You really pick and choose what information you share."

For the first time in a while—

A faint reaction crossed her face.

Not quite embarrassment.

But close enough that Ayan almost smiled.

"…It was unnecessary before."

He let out a tired breath.

"…Sure."

The silence between them grew quieter after that, though not uncomfortable.

Ayan leaned his head back slightly against the cold stone behind him, staring up at the night sky above the ruined structure.

The stars here always looked different from Earth.

Brighter.

Closer somehow.

Ayan's eyes slowly drifted across them as his thoughts continued turning.

"…Something from outside this world."

"…A system rewriting reality."

"…And somehow I'm connected to it."

The more he thought about it—

The less accidental everything felt.

Then another thought surfaced.

"…Aelira."

She looked toward him immediately.

"…What?"

Ayan hesitated briefly before asking.

"…Who are you really?"

The question lingered quietly in the night air.

Aelira remained silent.

Long enough that Ayan expected another vague answer.

But this time—

She sat beside him slowly instead of avoiding the question completely.

Her crimson eyes lifted toward the stars above.

"…Someone who stayed too long."

Ayan frowned slightly.

"…That doesn't answer anything."

A faint breeze moved through her silver hair as she remained looking upward.

"…I know."

Ayan watched her silently for a moment.

Then surprisingly—

He didn't push further.

Because something about the way she said it felt genuine.

Lonely even.

The silence between them deepened again afterward, quieter than before.

Eventually Ayan spoke again.

"…You know…"

His voice softened slightly from exhaustion.

"…Back on Earth…"

Aelira glanced toward him.

"…Earth."

Ayan nodded faintly.

"…My world."

He stared quietly toward the sky again.

"…I used to think fantasy worlds would be exciting."

A faint bitter smile crossed his face.

"…Turns out constantly almost dying is less fun than games make it look."

Aelira looked at him silently.

Then unexpectedly—

"…Yet you continue moving forward."

Ayan closed his eyes briefly.

"…I don't really have a choice anymore."

Aelira's gaze lingered on him for several moments.

"…No."

Her answer came quietly.

"…You don't."

The night grew colder around the ruined structure as silence returned once more.

But this time—

It felt different.

Not empty.

Not tense.

Just quiet.

And as exhaustion slowly pulled at his consciousness, one final thought remained in Ayan's mind before sleep finally began overtaking him.

Whatever was waiting at the end of this—

Already knew he was coming.
