Morning arrived slowly over the ruins.
Soft golden light filtered through the broken remains of the old stone structure, pushing away the cold darkness of the night while the forest surrounding the clearing gradually came alive again. Birds moved through the trees, distant wind rustled leaves softly, and for the first time in what felt like days—
The world almost seemed peaceful.
Almost.
Ayan sat near the edge of the ruined structure quietly sharpening his sword against a flat piece of stone, the repetitive motion steadying his thoughts more than he expected. The wounds across his body still ached, though Aelira's healing had reduced the pain significantly overnight.
But his mind—
Remained restless.
Because now he knew too much to pretend things were simple anymore.
Another person from Earth had arrived here before him.
That person became connected to the system.
And eventually—
Stopped being human.
Ayan paused the sharpening motion briefly, staring silently at his reflection along the blade's edge.
"…Not happening."
He muttered quietly.
Because no matter what happened—
He refused to become like that thing.
Footsteps approached softly behind him.
Aelira stopped beside the ruined wall nearby, her silver hair illuminated faintly beneath the morning light while her crimson eyes remained calmer than they had been the previous night.
"You should rest longer."
Ayan glanced toward her briefly.
"…And you should stop saying that every time I wake up."
A faint silence followed.
Then unexpectedly—
"…You are becoming easier to read."
Ayan blinked slightly before letting out a tired breath.
"…That sounds dangerous."
"…It is."
The answer came immediately.
Ayan almost smiled despite himself.
The strange tension between them had changed slightly after last night's conversation. Not completely gone.
But different.
Less like two people cautiously hiding behind walls.
More like two people slowly realizing how much depended on trusting each other.
Even if neither of them fully understood where that trust would eventually lead.
Ayan sheathed the sword slowly before standing.
"…So where are we heading now?"
Aelira's expression shifted slightly more serious.
"…North."
Ayan frowned.
"…You actually know where the next trace leads?"
She nodded once.
"…The residual structures beneath the ridge weren't random."
"…They formed directional patterns."
Ayan's eyes narrowed slightly.
"…You figured that out already?"
Aelira looked toward him calmly.
"…I noticed it before you did."
Ayan stared at her for several seconds.
Then sighed.
"…Right."
Honestly—
At this point he wasn't even surprised anymore.
The two of them left the ruined structure soon afterward, continuing northward through the gradually thickening forest while morning light filtered softly through the trees above.
Unlike the corrupted regions they had crossed before, this part of the world still felt alive in a natural way. Small creatures moved quietly through the undergrowth, insects buzzed near streams hidden between rocks, and the air smelled of damp earth and pine instead of blood and distortion.
But despite the peaceful surroundings—
Ayan remained alert.
Because now he understood something important.
The system didn't always reveal itself openly.
Sometimes—
It hid beneath normality.
"…So this whole world could already be infected."
The thought settled uncomfortably in his chest.
Aelira walked slightly ahead of him silently for a while before speaking again.
"…You are thinking too loudly."
Ayan blinked.
"…That's not even possible."
"…For you, perhaps."
Ayan narrowed his eyes slightly.
"…You really enjoy sounding mysterious."
A faint silence followed.
Then unexpectedly—
"…Only when it bothers you."
Ayan stared toward the back of her head for several seconds.
"…You know what, that one actually sounded intentional."
A very faint smile touched the corner of Aelira's lips before disappearing almost immediately.
And strangely—
That small reaction made the atmosphere feel lighter for a moment.
Until—
Ayan stopped walking abruptly.
His eyes narrowed sharply toward the forest ahead.
"…Wait."
Aelira immediately halted beside him.
The air had changed.
Subtly.
But enough.
Not pressure.
Not distortion.
Vibration.
Ayan crouched slightly, placing one hand against the ground beneath him.
Then his expression hardened.
"…Something's moving underground."
The vibrations came irregularly at first.
Heavy.
Slow.
But getting closer.
Aelira's gaze sharpened instantly toward the dense trees ahead.
"…Move back."
Ayan stepped away immediately.
The ground exploded upward less than two seconds later.
BOOOOM.
Earth and shattered roots erupted violently into the air as something massive burst from beneath the forest floor.
Ayan's eyes widened sharply.
"…What the hell is that?"
The creature towered nearly three times his height, its body resembling a grotesque fusion between an insect and a reptile. Thick black armor-like plates covered most of its body, overlapping across massive shoulders and a long segmented torso. Six enormous limbs dug violently into the earth beneath it, each tipped with curved claws large enough to rip through stone.
But the worst part—
Was its face.
Or rather—
What remained of one.
The creature's head looked unfinished, partially split open along one side where glowing crimson tissue pulsed visibly beneath cracked black bone. Multiple red eyes twitched unnaturally across its skull, some fully formed while others remained embedded beneath translucent flesh as though still developing.
And beneath its body—
Ayan noticed faint crimson lines spreading through the earth itself.
His chest tightened immediately.
"…Another evolved creature."
But unlike the others—
This one looked unstable.
Incomplete.
The creature let out a horrific screech that echoed through the forest before lunging forward with terrifying speed despite its massive size.
Ayan moved instantly.
One of its claws crashed into the ground where he had stood, shattering the earth apart violently.
"…Too fast!"
The creature swung again immediately.
Ayan ducked beneath the second strike before slashing upward toward its limb.
CLANG.
His blade barely cut through the outer armor.
"…Tch—!"
The creature's durability far exceeded the goblins or kobolds they had fought before.
Even the evolved forms.
Aelira moved beside him instantly.
The moment the creature attempted another strike toward Ayan—
Its limb exploded apart.
Not cut.
Erased.
Crimson energy shattered through the armored limb completely, spraying black blood across the forest floor as the creature shrieked violently.
Ayan glanced toward her briefly.
"…Still ridiculously overpowered."
Aelira ignored the comment entirely.
"…Its structure is unstable."
Ayan focused again immediately.
She was right.
The creature's body kept twitching unnaturally, parts of its armor shifting inconsistently as though the transformation wasn't complete yet.
"…Then if we pressure it—"
The creature suddenly roared.
And the ground beneath them pulsed crimson.
Ayan's instincts exploded instantly.
"…Move!"
Both of them leaped backward just as massive spikes of corrupted stone erupted upward from beneath the forest floor.
The creature's distorted eyes locked directly onto Ayan.
And for the first time—
He felt it.
Recognition.
Not intelligence.
Not awareness.
But instinctive reaction.
Like the system within the creature already knew exactly who he was.
Ayan's expression hardened immediately.
"…Yeah."
He tightened his grip on the sword.
"…I'm getting really tired of that."
