Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: A Morning of Calls

How it all began.....

The phone started ringing at 7:12 a.m.

Lena Hart didn't even need to look at the screen to know it wasn't good news. Good news rarely arrived before eight in the morning.

She let it ring twice before picking it up.

"Hello?"

"Miss Hart," a familiar voice said on the other end. "This is Mr. Carter from Westbridge Finance."

Lena closed her eyes briefly.

Of course it was.

"Good morning, Mr. Carter."

"I hope I'm not calling at a bad time."

"You're calling about the loan," she said quietly.

There was a short pause before he answered.

"Yes."

Lena leaned back in the chair behind her desk and stared at the ceiling. The paint near the corner was peeling, a task she had been meaning to fix for weeks.

"We discussed the repayment deadline last month," Mr. Carter continued. "Our records show the outstanding balance hasn't been cleared."

"I know," Lena whispered.

"Miss Hart, if the payment isn't made soon, the bank may have to begin recovery procedures."

Recovery procedures.

Such a clean, polite phrase.

It sounded far better than what it really meant. Seizing equipment. Closing accounts. Ending the business she had spent five years building.

"I'm working on it," Lena said, trying to keep her voice steady.

"We appreciate that," Mr. Carter replied. "But we will need confirmation soon."

The call ended. Lena slowly placed the phone on her desk and stared at it.

The silence in the office felt heavy. Her company—Hart Events—was never supposed to look like this. Five years ago, she had started small, full of energy and ideas, just enough savings to rent a tiny office and begin organizing local events.

At first, it had worked. Birthday parties. Corporate dinners. Charity fundraisers. Even a few weddings. Slowly, her client list grew, and last year she had taken a loan to expand: new equipment, better decorations, a small team of part-time assistants.

For a while, it felt like things were finally moving forward.

Then the cancellations started. A corporate launch postponed. A wedding moved to another planner. Half her bookings vanished within three months.

Lena reached for the folder on the corner of her desk and opened it. Inside were the numbers she had been avoiding all morning: expenses, outstanding payments, loans. She flipped through them slowly. By the last page, she sighed and closed the folder.

"If things don't change soon," she murmured to the empty room, "this place is finished."

Her phone buzzed again. Lena's chest tightened. She grabbed it immediately.

Office Landlord

She answered anyway.

"Hello, Mr. Daniels."

"Miss Hart," the older man said, "I just wanted to remind you the office rent for this month hasn't come through yet."

"I know," she said carefully. "I'm arranging it."

"You said that last week."

"I understand," Lena replied, swallowing the rising panic.

There was a pause.

"I can give you a little more time," he said finally. "But not too long."

"Thank you. I appreciate it."

She set the phone down and leaned back, resting her elbows on the desk. Two calls before eight in the morning. That had to be some kind of record.

By 8:15, Lena had barely begun to catch her breath when the next call came. Mrs. Harrington

"Lena," Mrs. Harrington's voice was polite but firm. "The rent is due today. Please make sure it's arranged."

"Yes, Mrs. Harrington. It will be paid," Lena said, her voice tight.

Another sigh. Another weight pressing on her chest. She folded her arms and stared out the window at the bustling street below. People rushing to work, coffee in hand, taxis weaving through traffic. Everyone seemed to know exactly where they were going.

"And I'm just trying to survive," she muttered.

By 9 a.m., Lena had spent the better part of an hour catching up on the few emails she had left. Most were routine. Booking confirmations. Payment receipts. Nothing urgent.

Then, just as she thought the morning couldn't get more overwhelming, her phone rang again.

She froze. A cold prickle ran down her spine.

"Hello?" she answered, trying to steady her voice.

"Good morning, Miss Hart. This is Dr. Evans from St. Mary's Hospital," the voice said gently. "We're calling regarding your mother's recent tests. We need to discuss the results. Could you come in today?"

Lena's stomach twisted. Her chest tightened. She nodded, though he couldn't see her. "Yes… I'll be there."

By ten o'clock, she had returned to her laptop. Just as she was about to shut it, a new email appeared.

Event Planning Inquiry

The sender caught her attention immediately: Cole Enterprises.

Lena's heart skipped a beat. Cole Enterprises. One of the largest companies in the country. Their name appeared constantly in the news—acquisitions, global partnerships, billion-dollar deals. Adrian Cole was the name behind it all: a billionaire CEO with a reputation as sharp as his business instincts.

She clicked the email open.

Miss Hart,

Your company has been recommended for a private corporate event. If you are available, we would like to discuss the possibility of hiring your services.

Please expect a call from our office shortly.

Regards,

Executive Office

Cole Enterprises

Lena blinked. Her company had been recommended? By whom? Most corporations that large hired major agencies, not small independent planners like hers.

Her phone rang. Lena jumped and grabbed it.

"Hello?"

"Good morning," a calm female voice said. "Am I speaking with Miss Lena Hart?"

"Yes."

"This is the executive office of Mr. Adrian Cole. We recently sent you an email regarding a corporate event. Mr. Cole would like to meet with you today to discuss the project."

Today?

Lena glanced around her office—the worn desk, peeling paint, stack of unpaid invoices. An hour ago, she had been wondering if the business could survive. And now… the most powerful company in the country wanted to meet her.

"Yes," she said quickly. "I'm available."

"Excellent. Please report to Cole Enterprises headquarters at two o'clock this afternoon."

The call ended. Lena slowly lowered the phone. Two o'clock. Cole Enterprises. A meeting with Adrian Cole.

She had no idea why one of the most powerful CEOs in the country would suddenly hire her. But for the first time that morning, Lena felt it: hope.

And maybe… a hint that her life was about to change forever.
