Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Golden Mask

Chapter 4: The Golden Mask

The next morning, I woke up on a bed so soft it felt like I was floating on a cloud. For a second, I forgot where I was. I forgot about the scrap yard, the cold rain, and the man with the golden eyes. But then, I felt the hard, rectangular shape of the rusted phone under my pillow.

I pulled it out. My bank balance was still $50,000. But the screen was glowing with a new, pinkish light.

[MISSION UPDATE: THE MET GALA.]

[TARGET: APHRODITE (GODDESS OF BEAUTY).]

[DEBT: 1,000 YEARS OF HUMAN DEVOTION.]

[LOCATION: THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART.]

"The Met Gala," I whispered, rubbing my eyes. "That's the most exclusive party in the world. I can't just walk in there with a fake ID."

I looked at my reflection in the giant bathroom mirror. The 'Body Reconstruction' was still working. My muscles were more defined, and my face looked like it belonged on a magazine cover. But I was still a kid from the streets. I didn't know how to act like a billionaire. I didn't even know which fork to use for salad.

Suddenly, my brain felt heavy. Images of ballroom dances, expensive wines, and how to speak to kings flashed through my mind. I knew exactly how to walk, how to smile, and how to lie to the richest people in New York.

"Okay, System," I said, a small smile appearing on my face. "Let's go shopping."

I spent the afternoon using my new money. I went to a tailor on Fifth Avenue who didn't ask questions as long as I showed him the cash. I bought a midnight-blue tuxedo that fit me perfectly. It made me look powerful. I also bought a simple silver mask, because the Met Gala was a masquerade ball this year.

As the sun began to set, New York turned into a sea of orange and purple lights. I took a black limousine to the museum. When the door opened, hundreds of cameras started flashing. Paparazzi were screaming names of famous actors and models.

I stepped out, my heart racing. I adjusted my silver mask and walked up the red carpet. The security guards looked at my face, then at the digital invite the phone had 'created' for me. They bowed and opened the heavy gold doors.

Inside, the museum looked like a dream. Huge statues were covered in flowers, and the ceiling was glowing with thousands of candles. People in sparkling dresses and expensive suits were drinking champagne and laughing.

But when I looked through the screen of my broken phone, the world looked different. The humans looked like gray shadows. But in the middle of the room, standing near a giant fountain, was a woman who was glowing like a sun. She was so beautiful it hurt to look at her. Every man in the room was staring at her, their eyes glazed over like they were in a trance.

[TARGET LOCKED: APHRODITE.]

[CURRENT FORM: ISABELLA VANE, THE WORLD'S TOP SUPERMODEL.]

I walked toward her, my heart thumping against my ribs. I could feel the blue whip coiling around my wrist, hidden under the sleeve of my expensive tuxedo.

"You look lost, handsome," a voice said.

I turned around. It was her. Aphrodite. Up close, her skin looked like it was made of pearls, and her eyes were a deep, shifting violet. She smelled like roses and something sweet, like honey. Just being near her made me want to give her everything I owned.

"I'm not lost," I said, using the 'Elite' tone the system gave me. "I'm exactly where I need to be."

She laughed, a sound like silver bells. "Most men stutter when they talk to me. You... you have a strange energy, Ethan."

My blood ran cold. "How do you know my name?"

She leaned in, whispering in my ear. "The God of War told me about a little thief who stole Mammon's gold. He said you were coming. He said I should play with you before I kill you."

Suddenly, the beautiful ballroom felt like a trap. The music seemed to slow down, and the people around us stopped moving. It was like time had frozen. Aphrodite's violet eyes turned into a dark, swirling purple.

"Do you know why I'm the Goddess of Beauty, Ethan?" she asked, her voice becoming deep and hypnotic. "It's because I eat the love and devotion of humans. I take their hearts and turn them into power. And your heart... it's so full of anger and pain. It will taste delicious."

[WARNING: DIVINE CHARM DETECTED.]

[USER WILLPOWER IS DROPPING!]

[EMERGENCY SHOCK INITIATED!]

The phone in my pocket gave me a sharp electric shock. I gasped, the fog in my brain clearing instantly. I stepped back, pulling the blue whip out of my sleeve. The sapphire light of the whip cut through the pink mist she was creating.

"I'm not here to be your snack," I hissed. "I'm here for the debt. One thousand years of Devotion. Hand it over, or I'll pull it out of you."

Aphrodite's beautiful face twisted into something ugly. Her fingernails grew into long, sharp silver claws. "You think you're a hero? You're just a scavenger with a stolen toy! I will make you fall in love with your own death!"

She lunged at me, moving like a dancer. She was fast—much faster than Mammon. Her silver claws swiped at my chest, tearing through my expensive tuxedo. I felt a sharp pain as her claws cut into my skin.

Crack!

I swung the whip, but she caught it with her bare hand. She didn't burn. She just smiled. "I am Beauty, Ethan. Even your weapon loves me."

I felt the whip losing its power. The sapphire light was turning pink. The phone started vibrating like crazy.

[SYSTEM OVERLOAD: DIVINE INTERFERENCE.]

[NEW COMMAND: THE HEART IS THE KEY.]

I realized what I had to do. I didn't need to fight her beauty. I needed to remember my own ugliness. I thought about the scrap yard. I thought about the smell of the trash and the way my father's hands were covered in grease and dirt. I thought about the reality of being poor.

That 'Ugly Truth' was my armor.

The pink light around the whip shattered. I pulled the whip back and lashed it against the floor, creating a wave of blue energy that pushed her back.

"You're late on your payment, Isabella," I said, calling her by her human name. "And the Agency doesn't like to wait."

I jumped forward, not as a gentleman, but as a street fighter. I tackled her into the fountain. The water splashed everywhere, soaking her million-dollar dress. I grabbed her wrist and pressed the broken phone against her forehead.

[COLLECTION STARTING: 5%... 30%... 60%...]

"No!" she screamed, her voice losing its music. "My beauty! My power! Stop it!"

A bright pink light began to pour out of her eyes and into the phone. The museum started to shake. The statues around us began to crumble.

[COLLECTION COMPLETE!]

The pink light vanished. Aphrodite lay in the water of the fountain, her hair messy and her face looking... ordinary. She wasn't ugly, but she wasn't a Goddess anymore. She was just a tired woman in a wet dress.

[MISSION SUCCESSFUL.]

[REWARD: 100,000 CREDITS.]

[NEW SKILL: THE EYE OF TRUTH.]

I stood up, my tuxedo ruined and my chest bleeding. I looked around the room. The guests were starting to wake up from their trance. I didn't have much time.

I grabbed a golden mask from a nearby table and put it on. I walked out of the museum, past the cameras and the lights, and disappeared into the New York night.

I had $150,000 in the bank now. I had defeated two Gods. But as I looked at the sky, I saw a red star glowing brighter than the rest. Ares, the God of War, was watching.

"Two down," I whispered, my voice cold. "Who's next?"
