Chapter 288: I've Got the Twin Gods of Space-Time! I Am King!
Cyrus was practically vibrating with excitement. Opportunity really did work in the most stunning, unexpected ways, didn't it? He'd only ever set his sights on Cresselia to begin with — and now, turning around, here he was, about to obtain Dialga and Palkia instead! This was destiny! He, Cyrus, was the true chosen one!
He could barely contain himself anymore — he was about to ascend to godhood!
"Sir Cyrus?"
The Galactic members watched him laughing like a man possessed, unable to help a shiver of unease. Is he actually having some kind of seizure?
"Stay here, all of you. Witness the dawn of a new era!"
Cyrus finally caught himself, a wide grin splitting his face. He pulled two orbs from his pocket — the Adamant Orb and the Lustrous Orb, divine items capable of summoning Dialga and Palkia.
He walked slowly to the center of Spear Pillar, then raised both orbs high overhead.
"Come! Come to me!!!"
As the Adamant and Lustrous Orbs began to glow, the clouds over the whole of Mt. Coronet churned violently, the sky itself twisting into upheaval. The diamond-blue and pearl-pink radiance of the two orbs blazed brighter and brighter. Above Spear Pillar, space and time itself began to warp and split on either side, pearl-pink and diamond-blue divine light bleeding out from the widening rifts.
With two low, resonant draconic roars, Dialga slowly emerged from the swirling rift of time on the left, its whole body shimmering with pale blue light — while from the rift of space on the right, Palkia emerged in kind.
An overwhelming, god-like majesty swept across the entire sky, blue and pink light illuminating the heavens. The mythic dragons embodying time and space itself, descended into the world!
The Galactic members stared up at the two Legendary deities, a mixture of fanatical awe and pure terror on every face. It had actually worked!
"Hahahaha—!"
Seeing Dialga and Palkia truly summoned before him, Cyrus dissolved into wild, uncontrollable laughter, his features twisted almost beyond recognition with the force of his own euphoria.
It's here! It's finally here!!
The two summoned dragons, however, were anything but pleased. A low draconic growl rumbled out as Dialga fixed Palkia with a hostile glare — and Palkia returned an equally warning look. Time and space were two lines that could never intersect; Dialga and Palkia essentially never crossed paths, and both possessed a territorial instinct bordering on the absurd. If they ever met within their own dimensions, each would be utterly convinced the other had trespassed on its domain, and a full-scale battle would follow. Even meeting here in the physical world, neither one was inclined to show the other so much as a civil expression. Well — their relationship had never exactly been warm to begin with.
Seeing Palkia dare glare back at him, Dialga's mood soured further. This third-tier dragon has absolutely no sense of her place, does she. Doesn't even bother with a proper greeting for her elder brother, and now she's glaring at me? Needs a lesson.
Cyrus, for his part, noticed the tension between the two dragons but couldn't have cared less. He swiftly produced the red chain and hurled it toward them.
"Now, obey my commands like the good pets you are! Hahahaha—!"
Cyrus cackled madly as the red chain shot forward, lengthening as it flew, snaking through the air like a serpent straight toward Dialga and Palkia. Both gods noticed the danger instantly, letting out furious, low growls, bodies rapidly retreating in an attempt to slip back into their own dimensions.
Too late.
The mythic artifact wound itself around both dragons in a flash, coiling and climbing tight against their bodies, binding them completely within seconds. The twin gods roared in fury; Palkia clawed desperately at the red chain, but it wouldn't give an inch. Forged from the extracted "heart" of the Lake Guardians, the red chain was, by its very nature, the twin gods' natural bane. An eerie red glow pulsed along the chain, seeping into Dialga's and Palkia's very minds. Before long, both dragons' eyes began glowing red as well, their struggles gradually stilling.
"Hahaha~ it worked! It really worked! I'm going to become this world's god!!"
Cyrus was drowning in ecstasy — he could feel it, genuinely feel it: he had actually gained control of Dialga and Palkia. Even if he ordered them to shatter this entire world with the power of space-time and forge a new one in its place, they would obey.
But of course, Cyrus wasn't some madman like Charon. Destroying the current world — what would even be the point of possessing Dialga and Palkia then? If the world never knew what he'd achieved, what meaning would any of it have? Privately, Cyrus had always held Charon's whole ideal in contempt — the man's brain had clearly rotted through. Using Dialga and Palkia's power to make yourself this world's living god — wasn't that already good enough? Why go and destroy the world to build a new one on top of it? Only an idiot would think that way.
And Cyrus, unlike Charon, was no idiot. He would use Dialga and Palkia's power to ascend to godhood, full stop.
"You said you were going to become what, exactly?"
A young voice cut in suddenly from behind him.
"Who's there?!"
Cyrus spun around — and found himself facing one young man and two women. The handsome young man wore a faintly mocking smile, holding up a camera with obvious relish, while behind him stood two exquisitely beautiful, slender women. Further back still floated the Lake Guardians, alongside a magnificent white dragon. As for the Galactic members who'd come with him — every last one of them was already kneeling on the ground, apparently subdued by these three uninvited guests just moments earlier.
"Who else would it be. The famous Sinnoh Champion Cynthia, of course." Cyrus recognized her immediately, adjusting his glasses, his tone dripping with arrogant sarcasm.
"Didn't expect you three to actually track me down here. But you're too late — hahaha — I already have Dialga and Palkia under my control. There's nothing you can do to stop me now."
If this had happened earlier, the sight of Cynthia would have sent him fleeing on the spot. But that was then! This was now!
Cynthia's brow furrowed — had they really arrived too late?
"Oh? So what exactly do you plan to do now?" Mammon asked, all polite curiosity.
"I! Will become this world's new king!"
Cyrus flung both arms wide as if embracing the whole world, voice ablaze with fanatical intensity.
"This world's order! This world's future! Everything this world contains! All of it — belongs to me!"
Right — he had Dialga and Palkia now. He was this world's unstoppable, undisputed power. He stood above the entire Pokémon League itself. He could even reshape the world entirely, if he wished — though, honestly, where was the fun in that?
"That's not going to happen."
Hearing Cyrus's grandiose declaration, Cynthia remained perfectly composed, shaking her head.
"Oh? Are you three planning to defy me? To defy someone who now commands Dial—"
Cyrus sneered.
"Defy you? Why would that even matter, you pathetic waste of space." Mammon had heard enough, letting out a sigh.
"What did you say?"
"I said you're a waste of space. Is there a problem with that?" Mammon repeated himself with impeccable courtesy.
"You bastard! How dare you insult me like this!"
Cyrus's face flushed a furious red, glaring daggers at Mammon.
"Idiot. That's the whole extent of your composure? What on earth gave you the delusion that possessing Dialga and Palkia meant you could rule this world?"
Mammon looked at him with pure mockery.
Dialga and Palkia were genuinely powerful, sure — but without their Origin Formes, they were nowhere close to unstoppable. Not to look too far afield, but if a certain deeply reclusive old man with a passion for ice sculptures ever found out Cyrus had gotten his hands on Dialga, he'd absolutely come by for a "friendly chat." And that wasn't even getting into the fact that even the red chain couldn't hold Dialga and Palkia under control indefinitely.
"And besides — someone as pathetic as you, even handed Dialga and Palkia on a silver platter, is still fundamentally pathetic. What exactly do you think you're capable of doing with them?"
Mammon's mockery showed no signs of letting up.
Cyrus's face had gone completely, dangerously red by this point. Pathetic? A waste of space? He'd just obtained the legendary, mythic Dialga and Palkia, and this man still dared call him pathetic, worthless?
"Dialga! Destroy him for me!"
Cyrus roared.
Bound by the red chain, Dialga let out a low draconic growl, a dazzling blue light igniting in its jaws, energy gathering with frightening intensity — power capable of warping time itself. Its signature move: Roar of Time!
"Kyogre, hold the line."
Mammon flicked out two Poké Balls backhanded, releasing Kyogre and Dark Mewtwo before him. Kyogre let out a resonant cry, a flash of golden light passing over it as it transformed into its Primal Forme, golden eyes fixed steadily on Dialga above. The gathered Roar of Time energy shot forward, and Primal Kyogre raised a Protect barrier to meet it.
BOOM!
The Roar of Time slammed heavily into the barrier, terrifying energy churning wildly, violent shockwaves rippling outward in every direction. A flash of Mega Evolution light passed over Dark Mewtwo, instantly transforming it into its Mega Mewtwo Y form, one arm raised, an invisible psychic barrier shielding Mammon and the others.
So strong!
Cynthia stared, astonished, at that blinding wall of blue energy. Truly worthy of being the mythic embodiment of time itself.
Soon enough, the Roar of Time's energy dissipated entirely, Primal Kyogre's Protect barrier scattering into motes of light.
"Hahahaha—! You see that?! That's the power of Dialga!"
Seeing Primal Kyogre reduced to pure defense, Cyrus burst into another arrogant laugh. All that talk, and in the end all you could manage was blocking it, huh.
"Mammon, can you actually beat them?" Cynthia asked, a note of worry in her voice. If not, an ambitious madman like Cyrus really might plunge this whole world into chaos.
"You underestimate me a little too much, Cynthia. These are just a pair of space-time dragons that haven't even reached their Origin Formes."
Mammon's tone was light, unbothered — he didn't rate Dialga and Palkia as a threat in the slightest. And honestly, that assessment was accurate. If Dialga and Palkia could actually reach their Origin Formes, Mammon really would find them a genuine handful. But these two had lost their Origin Orbs ages ago — and Palkia's, as it happened, was currently sitting safely in Mammon's own possession.
Hearing Mammon's calm, confident declaration, whatever faint unease had lingered in Cynthia's heart dissolved instantly, replaced by an unprecedented wave of security. Right. This is Mammon we're talking about. As an opponent, she genuinely wouldn't have known where to even begin trying to beat him — but as an ally standing beside her, that same quality translated into a sense of safety so complete it was almost overwhelming. As long as Mammon was here, everything would be fine. The thought came to her with no real justification needed — it simply was.
"Dialga and Palkia aren't really the hard part here. And honestly, they're not even our real opponent."
Mammon's eyes narrowed slightly. He'd never once been worried about Dialga or Palkia themselves — between Primal Kyogre, Mega Mewtwo Y, and his own wits, beating them wasn't going to be difficult.
"And this pathetic excuse for a man is only controlling Dialga and the others through a divine artifact anyway. The moment the red chain's control is broken, this waste of space will be torn apart by Dialga and Palkia themselves, no help needed from us."
Mammon made zero effort to hide his contempt for Cyrus. Using an item to control a Legendary was something Mammon looked down on deeply — it only ever meant one thing: the person doing it was simply too weak to earn that power any other way.
"Mammon, breaking the red chain binding the two sovereigns will restore them to their right minds."
Uxie's cool telepathy cut in.
"The red chain draws on the power of our own 'hearts' — different in nature from the twin sovereigns' own power, but sharing the same divine source, which is why it can affect them, and why they themselves struggle to break free of it," Azelf explained.
"But your Pokémon, Mammon, could break the red chain easily. That alone would restore both sovereigns to their senses," Mesprit added.
"Okay, got it." Mammon replied.
That made things even simpler — all he really needed to worry about now was Giratina. Though even that wasn't much cause for concern. If Giratina really did show up and proved troublesome...
He'd just have the young Rayquaza pull out its signature little trick.
