The clerk had covered the bracket with a sheet of plain paper.
We stood beneath it while he fastened the corners of the notice underneath. A boy near the front kept shifting onto his toes, though there was nothing to see yet. I held yesterday's announcement folded in my left hand and watched the clock above the desk.
The announcement had acquired a soft crease where I kept folding it. I opened it once more, looked at the time and closed it along a different fold. This made the paper thicker and no more useful.
A student beside me asked the person in front to move a little. The person moved into the space I had left for my right arm. I stepped back, found another shoulder behind me and turned until I could see the clock again.
"Can you see it?" the first student asked.
"Not yet."
"I meant the names."
"So did I."
