Ren brought the cups up from the hall shortly after six, one in each hand. He stopped inside the door until I moved the clinic papers off the clear end of the table.
"The woman downstairs said to bring both back in the morning if you're keeping them."
"All right."
He set them down and returned the change from the extra serving. I put it in the purse without counting it twice. The hall's cups were thick, with blue rims, and one had a little notch at the base of its handle. I drew that one toward me.
The other cup was nearer Ren. I reached past it for the appointment and saw him move his hand out of the way. He had been about to turn the handle so it faced me.
"There is fine."
He left it where it was. A drop from the base of my cup marked the table. I wiped it with my thumb before remembering which hand I was using and shook the moisture off awkwardly beside my chair.
Ren watched the papers instead of my face. "Shall I move those?"
"I've got them."
