Liam set the cup down with care. "You promised me one day."
Rex, unfortunately for his continued survival, understood exactly what the conversation had become.
His expression changed at once, horror settling over his face with the grim force of a man realizing that the economy might actually be the safer topic.
"Oh," Rex said. "So he found out about your… secret."
The silence that followed should have warned him.
Rex cleared his throat. "I might take the economy part to Damian."
Liam's crimson eyes flashed.
"So you knew too?"
Rex froze.
On the other side of the transparent screen, Mezos let his head fall into one hand with the quiet despair of a man watching a political ally walk backward into an active execution device.
"Rex," Arik said in a low, warning tone.
"No." Liam raised one finger toward Arik without looking away from the screen. "Do not stop him now."
Arik went still.
