The first thing Arik noticed was that the suite did not smell abandoned.

It should have.

Seventy-two years behind sealed doors should have left stale air, dead fabric, dust thick enough to soften every edge, and the quiet decay of rooms preserved past the point of reverence. Instead, the air that moved out to meet him carried cedar, rain-washed stone, faint ink, and the colder trace of dormant sovereign ether, as though the rooms had been breathing very slowly without letting anyone know.

The lights came on, one by one, creeping up the walls, gold under black glass, dim enough not to hurt his eyes, yet familiar enough to twist something in his chest before he knew why.

Arik stopped two steps inside, and the memory unfolded in front of his eyes.
