Chapter 5 - A map left behind

The sun is higher now, and the soft golden light shines on the port. The sea sparkles, and the sound of the waves mixes with the noise of people rushing around. Seagulls fly over the ships, their cries echoing in the air.

Falak stood near a corner. Her heart was beating fast almost louder than the waves. The big clock on the tower showed ten minutes left.

She looked around nervously, lost in her own thoughts.

"This is it… the moment everything changes."

Then she saw them men in black suits entering the port. Their sharp eyes scanned every corner like hunters searching for their prey. A cold shiver ran through her.

"Mom, they're here," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Her mother's face tightened. She grabbed Falak's hand and hurried behind a stack of wooden crates, hiding from view. Both of them sat down, breathing fast.

"Only five minutes left," her mother whispered, glancing at the clock again. "Falak, listen carefully. We don't have time."

Falak's eyes filled with tears. "Mom why can't we just go together?"

Her mother gently held Falak's face between her hands. "I'll distract them. You'll run straight to the ship. Don't stop. Don't look back. Do you understand?"

Falak shook her head. "No, I can't—"

"Yes, you can. And you must." Her mother's voice cracked slightly, but she forced a brave smile. "You have a life waiting for you. When you reach the city, find your aunt Fariha Aftab. She will protect you. I have written her address in your diary."

"Aunt Fariha?" Falak repeated through soft sobs.

"Yes," her mother said quickly, her eyes darting toward the men. "I can't explain everything now but remember her name. Fariha Aftab. Find her. She's your safe place."

Falak's tears fell faster. "Mom please come with me."

Her mother pulled her close, holding her like she would never let go. "Falak," she whispered shakily, "no matter what happens… you must survive. You must live your life. And one day… after reaching your dream… you'll come back to me, Okay."

Falak buried her face in her mother's shawl, her heart aching.

"Some goodbyes don't use words… they live inside your heartbeat forever."

Her mother lifted her chin with trembling fingers. Her eyes glistened. "My daughter… you are my dream."

Just then, footsteps thundered closer.

"She's here! Near the crates!" a man shouted.

Her mother quickly wiped Falak's tears. "Go, my child. Run. And never forget… I love you."

Falak's voice broke, "I love you too, Mom."

Her mother stepped out to distract them. "There she is!" the men yelled, and rushed after her.

Falak's heart screamed silently as she ran toward the ship. Her feet hit the wooden planks, each step heavier than the last. She climbed the narrow bridge, gasping for air.

"Run, Falak… this is not just a step forward — it's a leap into a new life."

Suddenly, one of the men spotted her. "There! The girl!" he shouted and rushed toward the ship.

Falak froze for a heartbeat.

The ship's horn blasted — HOOOOON! Ropes untied. The bridge lifted.

The man stepped forward but missed her by inches. His hand slammed against the railing as the ship slowly pulled away from the dock.

Falak gripped the railing with trembling hands, watching the crowd grow smaller. And then… she saw her mother standing between the crowd, looking at the ship with a faint, proud smile, her shawl blowing in the wind.

"Mom.." Falak whispered through her tears.

"Even if the world tries to break me, I will survive. For you. For us."

The waves grew stronger as the ship moved farther away. The port faded from view… but the memory of that last hug, those last words, burned bright inside her.

Falak closed her eyes. "I'll find Aunt Fariha. I'll build the life you dreamed for me. And one day, Mom I'll come back."

Falak slowly walks inside the ship. Her steps are shaky, her heart still racing from everything that just happened. She finds an empty chair near the window and sits down, staring at the wide, endless sea.

The water looks calm, but her heart is not.

"What will my future look like now? Where will this journey take me?" she wonders, hugging her small bag tightly against her chest.

Suddenly, a sharp thought strikes her. Her diary.

A cold shiver runs through her body. She quickly opens her bag, her hands shaking.

"No… no, no, no…" she whispers, her breath catching in her throat. "Please… it can't be."

She searches again, hoping maybe it's hiding somewhere deep inside the bag. But her heart sinks.

She closes her eyes as tears gather in the corners.

"I left it… I left it in the drawer."

That diary was more than just pages. It held her dreams, her secrets, It had her mother's handwriting, the address of Aunt Fariha Aftab, the only hope she had in the big city.

Her voice breaks into a whisper, "That was my only way to find her…"

She lowers her head, pressing her forehead against her knees. The ship rocks softly, but it doesn't calm her heart.

"What will I do now? Where will I go?" she thinks as tears quietly fall down her cheeks.

As the ship moves farther away from the shore, Falak realizes something she's truly on her own now.

And the journey she just began… won't be easy.

But what she doesn't know is that destiny is already waiting for her on the other side.
