Nobel was in Class Five.
He always tried to be brave, but just hearing the name of the old zamindar house in the village made him feel scared.
Everyone in the village used to say,
— "No one goes there at night…"
— "At midnight, crying sounds can be heard from that house…"
— "Sometimes, a woman in a white sari is seen at the window…"
Nobel was afraid of these stories, but deep inside, he was also very curious.
One afternoon, Nobel and his friends Rahul and Sagar were playing and ended up near the field behind the old zamindar house.
The sun was setting.
The sky had turned reddish.
Everything around them felt strangely silent.
Suddenly, Sagar said,
— "Let's go inside!"
Nobel immediately said,
— "No! Mom will scold me…"
Rahul laughed and said,
— "You're scared!"
Hearing that, Nobel became stubborn.
He said,
— "I'm not scared! Let's go!"
The three of them slowly pushed open the broken gate and stepped inside.
It was terrifyingly silent…
Broken walls all around,
hanging spider webs,
old wooden doors,
and a damp, musty smell in the air.
Suddenly—
BANG!
A window slammed shut on its own.
Sagar jumped in fear.
Rahul said,
— "It happened because of the wind…"
Nobel's throat went dry.
They entered a large hall.
Dust covered the floor.
Old portraits hung on the walls.
When Nobel shined the torchlight, he noticed—
one of the women in a portrait seemed to be staring right at them.
Nobel whispered,
— "Let's get out of here…"
Just then—
Huuu… huu… huuu…
It sounded like someone was crying!
All three of them froze.
Again—
Huuu… aa… aa…
This time, the sound was coming from upstairs.
Sagar said in a trembling voice,
— "W-who's there?"
No answer.
Only cold air.
And that crying sound.
Rahul said,
— "Let's go check…"
Nobel shouted,
— "Are you crazy?!"
But by then, Rahul had already started moving toward the stairs.
The old wooden staircase creaked—
Creak… creak… creak…
With every step, it felt as if someone was watching them from below.
As soon as they reached the second floor, the torchlight began to flicker.
Nobel's hands turned cold.
At the end of the corridor,
there was a half-open door.
And from inside came—
the crying sound…
Rahul slowly pushed the door open.
Creeeeeeak…
As the door opened—
In the corner stood a tall figure covered in white cloth!
Nobel screamed—
— "Ghost!!!"
Sagar fell backward in fear.
Then suddenly, the figure moved.
And then—
Meeeeooowww!
The three of them froze.
When Rahul pointed the torch properly, they saw—
It was just a big white cat! 🐈
An old white curtain had gotten wrapped around its body.
And the crying sound?
The wind was blowing through the broken window glass
and hitting an old bamboo frame,
creating a strange crying-like noise.
The three boys stared in shock.
Nobel said in embarrassment and anger,
— "So… all this time, everyone thought a cat and the wind were ghosts?"
Just then—
THUD!
Another door behind them suddenly slammed shut on its own!
All three of them screamed and ran.
Down the stairs,
through the broken gate,
all the way to the field before they finally stopped.
Panting outside, Sagar said,
— "I'm never going in there again!"
Rahul said,
— "Me neither!"
Nobel said,
— "Even if there's no ghost… that house is still terrifying!"
That night, as Nobel lay in bed, he kept thinking—
"Maybe everything has an explanation… but who closed that last door?" 😨
And to this day,
no one knows the answer…
