Chapter 1 - the night that changed everything

Chapter One:

The music inside Velvet Halo pounded like a heartbeat that never stopped.

Blue lights sliced through the dark room. The smell of expensive cologne mixed with alcohol hung in the air. Laughter, whispers, clinking glasses — it was a world built for people who didn't worry about tomorrow.

But Lily Carter worried about tomorrow every single day.

She adjusted the short black dress the club manager forced her to wear. It wasn't her style to

She balanced a tray of drinks carefully as she moved between tables.

"Table five," the bartender shouted.

Lily nodded. Her feet ached. She had been standing for six hours already. Another four to go.

College debt.

Her mother's hospital bills.

Rent due in five days.

She couldn't afford to be tired.

At table five sat three men in tailored suits. Expensive watches. Cold smiles. The kind of men who treated women like decorations.

She placed the drinks down.

One of them grabbed her wrist.

"Stay," he said, smirking. "Have a drink with us."

Lily gently pulled away.

"I'm working, sir."

He tightened his grip.

"I said stay."

Before she could respond, a calm voice cut through the noise.

"Let her go.

The man released her slowly

Lily turned.

And for a moment… everything went quiet.

He stood tall, broad shoulders, charcoal suit, no tie. Dark hair slightly messy like he didn't care. But what struck her most was his eyes — calm, observant and dangerous in a quiet way.

He didn't look drunk.neither does he look impressed by the club.

He looked like he didn't belong there.

Yet somehow… he owned the room.

The man who grabbed her laughed.

"Relax, man. We're just having fun."

The stranger stepped closer.

"I don't repeat myself."

There was no threat in his tone.

But it didn't need one.

The man lifted both hands.

"Alright. She's all yours."

Lily felt embarrassed.

"I'm not—" she said in Anger.

But the stranger had already turned to her.

"Are you okay?"

She nodded and said.

"Yes. Thank you."

He studied her face. Not her body like the others.

"What's your name?"

"Lily."she replied

He gave a small nod.

"Go finish your shift, Lily."

She blinked and said to herself

That was it?

No flirting,no asking for her number.

And no smug smile.

Just… respect and care.

She walked away, but she felt his eyes follow her.

Two hours later, Lily stepped outside the club through the employee exit. The cold New York night wrapped around her. She hugged her thin jacket closer.

She checked her phone and it was 11:48 PM,her bus came at midnight.

She sat on the curb, exhausted.

Then headlights stopped in front of her.

A sleek black Rolls-Royce.

She frowned.

The window rolled down and It was him.

"Get in," he said calmly.

Her heart jumped.

"I don't get into stranger's car."

He nodded and stepped outside

"I'm Ethan Blackwood."

Her eyes widened.

Everyone in New York knew that name.

CEO of Blackwood Holdings.

Tech billionaire, Forbes cover and

One of America's youngest billionaires.

She swallowed and say

"You're… Ethan Blackwood?"

"Yes."She laughed nervously.

"Then definitely no that I'm too poor to associate with someone like you."

To her surprise, he smiled a real smile. Then he said to her,

"I'm not trying to buy you."

She crossed her arms and asked him,

"Then what do you want?"

He looked at her carefully then he replied.

" Just a Dinner."

She blinked.

"…A Dinner?"

"Yes a dinner."

"That's it?"she asked

"Yes."thats just what I want ,Ethan replied

She shook her head and said.

"You don't even know me."

"I know enough."ethan replied

She laughed.

"I work at a club. That's not usually billionaire dating material."

He didn't flinch,then he said.

"I don't date resumes."

Then shortly,a bus passed behind her.

She hesitated on leaving.

He noticed that she was not comfortable, then he told her.

"You don't have to decide now,Just take my card."

He handed her a simple black card.

She stared at the card while leaving.

ThenHe walked back to the car.

Before getting in, he looked at her once more.

"Goodnight, Lily."

Then he drove away.

She sat frozen.

A billionaire just asked her to dinner.

She laughed softly.

She slipped the card into her purse.

But she didn't throw it away.

That night, in a penthouse overlooking Manhattan, Ethan stood by the window.

His assistant entered and said to him.

"You left the meeting early, sir."

"Yes."he replied.

"You never do that."

"I know."but was for a reason

The assistant hesitated and asked.

"Was something wrong?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

He looked at the city lights.

Then quietly said,

"I met someone."

Meanwhile, Lily lay in her tiny apartment. The ceiling paint was peeling. The heater barely worked.

She pulled the black card from her purse.

Her fingers traced the name.

Ethan Blackwood.

She sighed.

"Different worlds," she whispered.

But something in her chest felt warm.

Something dangerous and something hopeful.

She turned off the light.

But she couldn't sleep, because deep down…She knew her life had just changed.
