Chapter 6 - System Failure

The village elder, a man named Elder Torin as the AI gradually translated, summoned Kael at first light. Through gestures and broken phrases, he indicated that Kael could stay temporarily but must contribute and remain under watch.

Kael nodded acceptance. He demonstrated willingness by helping carry water buckets, using his small size to navigate tight spaces. The work exhausted him, but it earned cautious nods from some villagers.

Throughout the day, the AI refined its language matrix. Kael began forming simple sentences. "I am Kael. Thank you for food."

Elder Torin observed him closely during training sessions in the village square. Young men and women practiced forms, circulating energy that made their strikes crack the air.

Kael watched intently. His analytical mind noted patterns: breath control, stance stability, points where energy seemed to gather.

An accidental brush against a practicing youth caused a small spark. The youth startled and demanded explanation. Kael could only shrug and point to his own chest, trying to convey "I want to learn."

Suspicion lingered, but curiosity grew.

Back in his assigned room that evening, Kael felt the pull to return to the bunker. Power systems were surely degrading further. Yet leaving now without knowledge or allies risked everything.

A minor incident occurred when a rival youth, a boy named Garrick roughly twelve years old and already showing strong Ki, challenged Kael to a mock push. Kael used basic leverage from old physics lessons rather than strength. He redirected the push and sent Garrick stumbling.

Laughter rippled through onlookers. Garrick scowled but backed off when Elder Torin intervened.

Kael's tactical victory felt small yet significant. Intelligence still held value here.

Night brought restless thoughts. The bunker called to him. His parents' lives ticked away with every passing hour.

"AI, estimate remaining bunker power."

"Forty-one hours at current degradation rates, assuming no further failures."

Kael clenched his fists. He needed to act.

He approached Elder Torin the next morning with gestures indicating he must return to his "origin place" briefly. The elder seemed reluctant but assigned two escorts to accompany him partway.

The journey back through the forest tested Kael's growing endurance. The escorts moved with effortless grace, occasionally demonstrating Ki-enhanced leaps over obstacles.

Kael struggled but kept pace using determination and occasional rests.

They reached the cave entrance by midday. Kael signaled for the escorts to wait outside. They agreed after he promised a quick return.

Inside the shaft, the descent proved faster with gravity's help. Kael reached the bunker and immediately checked the capsules. Readings had worsened but remained stable for now.

He gathered additional supplies and inspected the crafting machine more closely. Repair seemed feasible with external metals and Ki-compatible components, though he lacked understanding of the latter.

The brain installation machine stood ready, its single-use warning prominent. Martial knowledge from old Earth waited inside.

Kael hesitated. Installing it now might overwhelm his young mind, yet the surface demanded combat readiness.

He decided to delay until better prepared.

Power fluctuations worsened during his visit. Another node failed.

Kael worked frantically to stabilize what he could, rerouting limited energy.

"System failure accelerating," the AI warned.

He sealed the bunker once more and climbed back to the surface, burdened with extra tools.

The escorts noted his changed demeanor but asked no questions they knew he could not yet answer.

Return to the village brought relief mixed with urgency. Kael had bought time, but the bunker would not last forever without intervention.

That night he practiced Ki sensing again. The warmth grew steadier, responding to his focused breathing.

System failure loomed like a shadow. Yet Kael felt the first sparks of adaptation.

The new world tested him relentlessly. He would answer with persistence and growing skill.
