Chapter 23 - 23. The Gathering Storm

Chapter 23: The Gathering Storm – 1912–1914

The years 1912 to 1914 were a time of mounting tension. The Balkan Wars, the naval arms race, the alliance systems—all pointed toward a catastrophe that few could imagine and even fewer could stop.

Adrian watched from Koningstad, his young heart heavy with the knowledge of what was to come. He knew the dates, the battles, the millions of dead. He could not prevent the war, but he could prepare his kingdom.

In the spring of 1914, he sat with his grandfather in the palace study. The old king was failing, his hands trembling, his voice weak.

"Adrian," Willem said, "you have been right about so many things. Tell me: what is coming?"

Adrian took a deep breath. "Archduke Franz Ferdinand will be assassinated in Sarajevo. Austria will declare war on Serbia. Russia will mobilize. Germany will invade Belgium. Britain will join. Within a month, all of Europe will be at war."

Willem stared at him. "How can you know this?"

"I cannot explain," Adrian said. "But I know. And we must be ready."

The old king nodded slowly. He had learned to trust his grandson. "What do you need?"

"I need you to declare neutrality the moment the fighting starts. I need you to order the military to full readiness. I need you to authorize the refugee programs I have designed."

Willem signed the papers. Then he leaned back in his chair. "You are fourteen years old, Adrian. Sometimes I forget."

"I forget too," Adrian said quietly. "But the world does not care about age. It cares about power."

On June 28, 1914, the news arrived: Archduke Franz Ferdinand had been shot in Sarajevo. Adrian was in the library with Professor Bergman when the telegram came.

Bergman read it, then looked at Adrian. "You knew."

"Yes," Adrian said. "And now the clock is ticking."

The weeks that followed were a blur of diplomatic notes, ultimatums, and mobilizations. Adrian watched from the palace windows as crowds gathered in Koningstad's squares, not to cheer for war but to pray for peace.

On August 4, the German army invaded Belgium. Britain declared war. The world was on fire.

King Willem, frail but resolute, appeared before parliament. "Zeelandia is neutral," he declared. "We will trade with all nations and fight for none. Our borders are closed to armies, open to refugees."

The declaration was met with applause, but also with fear. No one knew how long neutrality could last.

That night, Adrian stood on the palace balcony, looking out over the city. Bergman joined him.

"You have done what you could," the professor said. "Now we wait."

Adrian shook his head. "We do not wait, Professor. We prepare. This war will not end quickly. When it is over, the world will be changed. We must be ready to lead."
