The changes in the household were obvious even before anyone spoke. For the time in years the heavy suffocating silence of financial worry was replaced by the sound of shopping bags and the shiny polished look of a brand-new three-burner stainless steel gas stove.
Karthik watched his mother, Lakshmi touch the stove knobs like they were made of gold. Her old stove was rusty with burners that flickered with an orange flame blackening her pots and making her cough.
"Karthik this is much " she whispered, her eyes red. "The stove, the new silk-cotton saree and these formal shirts for your father... Where is all this really coming from?"
Sundaram stood in the corner wearing one of the shirts—a crisp sky-blue cotton that made him look ten years younger.. His face was etched with a deep paternal suspicion. He wasn't a man who believed in luck.
The Boardroom Table (The Kitchen Floor)
Karthik sat his parents down on the woven mats in the living room. He sat up straight his hands. Looked them in the eye with a seriousness that demanded respect.
"Appa, Amma I didn't win the lottery. And I didn't steal " Karthik began, his voice calm. "I've spent months—ever since we got the computer—learning how businesses handle their money. Do you know Vasanth & Co. In the market?"
Sundaram nodded slowly. "Everyone knows Vasanth. He's a businessman."
"He was a businessman struggling " Karthik corrected. "He was losing thousands of rupees every month because his staff couldn't keep track of the stock. I created a Digital Accounting Ledger. It's a piece of software that does the work of five clerks in five seconds. I sold it to him for a consultancy fee."
He pulled out a notebook where he had neatly mapped out his business plan—a version of his real strategy, designed to soothe their middle-class fears.
"Every textile shop, every hardware store and every grocery wholesaler in Tamil Nadu still uses paper books.. The government is changing the tax laws next year. They have to go digital. I am the person in this district who can give them a cheap easy solution."
The "CEO" Pitch to the Parents
"I've registered a firm name " Karthik lied smoothly. "K.M. Digital Solutions. I'm not a student anymore. I'm a service provider."
Sundaram looked at the 30,000-rupee profit. ". You're only fifteen, Karthik. Your Board Exams..."
"I will get the state rank, Appa. Don't worry about that. My brain works faster than the curriculum " Karthik said with a confident smirk. ". While I study I want you to help me. I need someone I trust to handle the signatures since I'm a minor. I want you to be the Chairman of my company."
Sundarams chest swelled with a mix of pride and confusion. He had spent his life working in a government machine. Now his son was offering him a leadership role.
That night for the time in his memory—both the old and the new—Karthik heard his parents laughing in the kitchen while his mother cooked on the new stove. The sound was better than any profit margin he had ever seen.
As he lay in bed staring at the ceiling the 40-year-old strategist in him was already planning his next move.
"The accounting software is a distraction " he thought. "It gives me the cover for the money. Now I need to focus on the target: The OMR Land."
As Karthik walked toward the school gate the morning feeling the weight of his new leather bag he noticed a black Pulsar bike parked near the entrance. Leaning against it was 'Crosscut' Mani, the bookie from the Sports Club.
Mani wasn't smiling. He was tossing a coin in the air his eyes fixed on Karthik. Behind him stood two men their arms crossed.
"Hey, 'Genius Karthik " Mani called out the coin snapping into his palm. "I did some digging. No schoolboy knows that much about cricket.. No schoolboy walks away with 30,000 of my money without giving me a share in his next big win."
Karthik didn't flinch. He adjusted his school tie looked at the 40-year- man trapped in a bullys body and sighed.
"Mani-anna " Karthik said, stepping closer until he was inches away from the bike. "You're worried about 30,000? I'm currently planning a deal 30 crores. If you want to be a partner stop acting like a thug and start acting like a security detail. Because by month I'm going to have a lot of enemies who are much bigger, than you."
Manis jaw dropped. He had come to intimidate a child. He felt like he was standing in front of a ghost—or a king.
Mani said to Karthik "You talk much for a kid whose voice has not even fully changed yet." He reached out with a fast hand grabbing the strap of Karthiks new leather bag and pulling him forward. "30 Crores? You do not even have 30 rupees if I decide to empty this bag now " Mani said.
The two men behind him moved in closer circling Karthik like sharks. The other students nearby walked faster looking away scared of being caught in the crossfire.
Karthik did not pull away. He did not even blink. He leaned in closer to Mani his voice dropping to a whisper that was colder than the mountain air. "Mani-anna " Karthik said, his eyes looking into Manis. "Before you open that bag let's talk about the Blue Star Godown near the railway tracks. Specifically what happened on the night of November 12th year " Karthik said.
Mani stopped moving. The color went away from his face fast it was as if someone had pulled a plug. He let go of the bag strap his fingers shaking slightly. "How do you know that name?" Mani said, his voice shaking.
Karthik remembered a scandal that happened in 2007. It came out that Mani and a local politician had been smuggling kerosene out of that godown and a bad thing happened that night that resulted in a fire that was covered up with a bribe. It was the secret that eventually sent Mani to Puzhal Central Prison for ten years. Karthik said, "I know everything. I know about the kerosene. I know about the thing that happened. And I know that the DSP is currently looking for a reason to make an arrest to get a promotion before the New Year " Karthik said.
Karthik stepped back fixing his school shirt with calm. "Now you have two choices. You can try to take my 30,000 rupees today and spend the decade in jail. Or you can realize that a boy who knows that secret probably knows a lot of things. Like how to make you a very rich man " Karthik said.
The two men looked at each other confused. They did not know about the Blue Star Godown.. They saw their boss, the toughest man in the neighborhood sweating in broad daylight.
Mani swallowed hard. He looked at Karthik. Really looked at him. This was not a 15-year-old. This was a bad person in a school uniform. "What do you want?" Mani said, his voice shaking.
Karthik said, "I told you. I am going to be a busy man. I need a driver who knows the backstreets of Chennai. I need someone who can talk to people who do not want to listen. And importantly I need someone who knows that if they ever cross me their life as a free man is over " Karthik said.
He. Looked back over his shoulder. "Be here, at 4:00 PM when the bell rings. Bring the Pulsar. We are going to the OMR stretch.. Mani-anna?" Karthik said.
"Yeah?" Mani said.
"Wear a helmet. We are going to be moving " Karthik said.
