Chapter 1 - A down memory lane

A Love Written in Snow and SilenceThe first rays of sunlight gently kissed the snow-covered peaks, painting the valley in shades of gold and soft pink. Kashmir had always felt like a dream to Aarav and Meera—a dream they had promised each other they would live again and again.

For them, it wasn't just a destination. It was their place.

Years ago, they had first come here as strangers—two travelers who met by chance beside a quiet lake. A conversation turned into laughter, laughter into companionship, and companionship into love. Since then, Kashmir had become the silent witness of their story.

This time, they returned as husband and wife.

The Valley of MemoriesThe houseboat swayed gently on the still water as Meera stepped out onto the wooden deck, wrapping her shawl tightly around her shoulders. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and distant saffron fields.

Aarav joined her with two cups of steaming kahwa.

"Still as beautiful as the first time?" he asked, handing her a cup.

Meera smiled, her eyes reflecting the mountains.

"More. Because now, you're with me."

They spent their days wandering through valleys painted with tulips, taking long shikara rides, and getting lost in narrow streets filled with warmth and life. They laughed like children, clicked countless photos, and revisited the exact spot where they had first met.

At night, under blankets and dim lantern light, they spoke of dreams—of a home, of future travels, of growing old together.

Time felt slower here. Kinder.

The Morning That Changed EverythingIt was a morning unlike any other.

The sky was unusually clear, the mountains sharper, the silence deeper. Aarav insisted they wake early to watch the sunrise from a nearby meadow—a place locals had told them about.

"Trust me," he said, pulling her hand playfully. "This will be unforgettable."

They walked along a quiet path, their breath visible in the cold air. The world seemed asleep, wrapped in a blanket of calm.

Meera leaned her head on his shoulder.

"I wish we could stay here forever."

Aarav smiled softly.

"We will keep coming back. Always."

And then—

The silence shattered.

A distant sound echoed through the valley. At first, it was faint, almost like a crack in the air. Then another. And another.

Gunshots.

Fear in ParadiseBefore they could react, chaos erupted.

Shouts. Running footsteps. Panic spreading like wildfire.

A group of armed men appeared from the treeline—faces covered, voices harsh and commanding. Everything happened too fast.

Aarav instinctively pulled Meera behind him.

"Stay close," he whispered, his voice steady despite the fear in his eyes.

They tried to move away quietly, but fate had other plans.

One of the men noticed them.

A shot rang out.

The sound echoed endlessly in Meera's ears as Aarav collapsed beside her.

Time stopped.

"Aarav!" she screamed, dropping to her knees.

Blood stained the snow—a cruel contrast against its purity.

Her hands trembled as she tried to hold him, her tears falling onto his face.

"Please… please don't leave me… Aarav, look at me…"

His breathing was shallow, his eyes struggling to stay open.

"I'm here…" he whispered faintly.

The Cry of a Broken HeartMeera's world shattered in that moment.

The valley that once held their laughter now echoed with her cries.

She screamed for help, her voice raw with desperation. Her fingers pressed against his wound, trying to stop what she could not control.

Around them, fear still lingered—but in the distance, another sound emerged.

Sirens.

Orders being shouted.

Security forces rushed in, their presence cutting through the chaos like a shield. The attackers fled into the mountains as the area was secured.

One of the officers knelt beside Meera.

"Ma'am, we're here. Please move back—we need to help him."

She shook her head violently.

"No! Don't take him away from me!"

"We will save him," the officer said firmly but gently.

Reluctantly, she let go as they carried Aarav onto a stretcher.

Her hands, stained with his blood, trembled as she followed.

Between Hope and FearThe ride to safety felt endless.

Meera sat in the vehicle, clutching Aarav's hand, whispering prayers she barely remembered.

"Stay with me… please stay with me…"

Machines beeped. Voices spoke in urgency. The world blurred around her.

Hours passed.

Or maybe it was minutes.

Time had lost all meaning.

A Fragile LightWhen Aarav finally opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was Meera.

She was sitting beside him, her face pale, eyes swollen from crying—but still holding on.

"Aarav…" she breathed, her voice breaking into relief.

He managed a faint smile.

"You're… still here…"

She let out a soft, broken laugh through tears.

"Where else would I be?"

The doctors said he was lucky. The bullet had missed anything fatal. It would take time—but he would recover.

To Meera, it felt like a miracle.

Going HomeDays later, under the care of security forces, they were escorted safely back home.

The journey was quiet.

Kashmir faded behind them—not as the dream it once was, but as something deeper. Something marked by both love and pain.

Meera looked out of the window one last time.

The mountains stood still. Silent witnesses.

Love Beyond FearBack home, life slowly began to heal.

Aarav regained his strength. Meera regained her smile.

But something had changed forever.

One evening, as they sat together watching the sunset from their balcony, Aarav reached for her hand.

"Are you afraid now?" he asked softly.

Meera thought for a moment.

"Yes," she said honestly.

"But not of going back."

He looked at her, surprised.

She smiled gently.

"Because Kashmir didn't take you away from me. It showed me how much you mean to me."

Aarav squeezed her hand.

"Then we'll go back someday," he said.

"When the valley feels safe again."

Meera nodded.

"And when we do… we'll stand in that meadow again. Not with fear—but with love."

Epilogue: The Valley RemainsKashmir remained what it had always been—beautiful, unpredictable, fragile.

But for Aarav and Meera, it became something more.

A place where love was tested.

A place where life changed.

A place where, even in the face of darkness, their bond refused to break.

Because some stories aren't just about happiness.

They are about surviving together.

And choosing love—again and again.
