Chapter 30 - A New Direction

Surviving keeps you alive but purpose gives you a reason not to die.

"Identification… accepted."

The voice echoed from the darkness beyond the door cold and precise.

"You didn't touch anything else…" someone whispered behind him

"Now did it…"

"I don't know." Jasper cutteed in sharply.

It was not the full truth because deep down something felt utterly familiar and it scared him most. As the door opened fully, white light spilled out blindingly compared to th me world they came from. They all shielded their eyes and slowly they stepped inside. Corridors stretched a head with metal walls and sealed compartments, as screns flicked with life, almost everything the surface lost was still breathing there.

"This is…" someone trails off.

But no one finished the sentence because they did not have a word for it. Lights shifted and they moved and doors unlocked a head of them guiding and directing them.

"It's leading us somewhere." Jasper said.

"It herding us." Stan chipped in and he frowned.

Fair point, Jasper didn't argue with him because both can be true. Stacy moved closer with her voice low.

"You feel that, don't you?" She asked.

"Yeah." Jasper nodded slightly

"This place…it know you."

He didn't answer because he wanted to confirm it and as they enter a central chamber which was wide open and yet alive with quiet systems at the center, a large interface panel was still active. The group hanged back slightly now and no one pushed forward now. They'd all realized that it was something bigger. As Jasper stepped up, the system reacted. A screen lighted up and the word appeared.

"Welcome back, Jasper."

Silences detonated across the room, Stacy's eyes snapped towards him and the others stepped back instinctively and everything changed between them.

"You didn't tell us…" one of the group member whispered.

Jasper stared at the screen and his jaw tightened.

"I didn't know." He said.

And this time, it was true as the system continued.

"Directive remains active."

"Route available."

Just then, a map flickers onto the screen in a wide and detailed manner as it marked the destroyed world above and it also highlighted something else, a path leading east which was fear beyond where they were now through unknown terrain across danger zones and toward something that was marked only as "Zone E-7 as preservation site". The room went still because that word preservation meant hope or control or maybe something far worse. The group reacted immediately.

"This could be a trap or safe zone… or something controlling survivors…" as voices overlapped each other again. It's was not chaotic unlike before because now they have direction and direction create a conflict. Jasper turned to all of them, including the old and new survivors.

"we needed a path." He said as he gestured to th map.

"How we have one."

Stan crossed his arm slightly.

"Do you trust this?" He asked.

Jasper didn't answer him immediately, he felt that trust wasn't the point.

"No." He said.

"But I trust standing still less." His answer was honest and direct because they had seen what standing still does. It kills you slowly. Stacy stepped forward with her eyes locked on the map.

"East." She said as she exhaled slot.

"Then that's where we'd go."

Stacy understood something critical about purpose because that is what keeps people together, without it they'll all fall apart again. They all arrived at a decision to risk it all and move forward. They began with the preparations immediately. The facility offered minimal supplies including basic tools like water reserves, fragments of the old world enough to give them a chance but not enough to make it easy and nothing was easy anymore. Jasper studied the route as his eyes scanned every detail which had the terrain markers and danger zones, including collapsed regions and one thing stood out. Multiple routes converged toward the same destination which meant that they wouldn't be the only ones heading there and just as Stacy saw it, she said.

"Others are going to find this."

"Yeah." Jasper nodded.

Which meant that there would be competition, conflict and war if necessary. The left the facility not as broken survivors but as a group with purpose and direction and also as a force which grew slowly. The exit opened silently revealing the ruined world again filled with ash and silence and with endless uncertainty. The moved east as their journey began again more aware and dangerous purpose makes you visible and visible things gets hunted. Far behind them the hidden facility sealed itself again dark and silent. Inside, the system reactivated as screens flickered with updated data, a new variable had been introduced and one line appeared across the central interface.

"Subject: Jasper—Active, Trajectory confirmed: East and Phase Two: Initiated."

As Jasper and the group disappeared into the wasteland with a new purpose driving them forward…one chilling truth begins to unfold behind them; They didn't choose this path…they were being guided into it.
