Chapter 40 - Hidden Danger

The deadliest traps don't look like danger, they look like safety.

"Run."

The word didn't come from outside rather it came from his head like a sharp instinct which was immediate. He moved before thinking and turned towards the door but it was already sealed. The screen flickers, images glitched with his last stuttering across the walls with fragments breaking apart and then total blackout. Silence dropped again but this to me it was not empty. As he breathed slowly he already knew that it was not an observation anymore but a test.

A soft click echoed behind him and as he spinned, something moved in the dark very fast that he could not get a glimpse. And then after seconds of silence, he dropped instinctively. A sharp object sliced through the air where his head was but got missed by inches. He could hear metal scraping the concrete floor. Jasper rolled and squatted, his eyes scanned the entire room and two figures emerged from the darkness, they were not guards or soldiers.

They were faster and more precise and their movements were wrong like that already knew how he would react.

"Targets engaging," one mutters almost mechanically.

Jasper didn't wait, he moved first and closed the distance before they could reset and be moved first.

The first strike came directly to the throat but was blocked. The count came instantly with a fast elbow toward his ribs as Jasper twisted, barely avoiding the blow and still took enough to stagger. They were not normal fighters but were trained, optimized and were expecting him. The second attacker moved in a low sweep and Jasper jumped back but the first closed from above. He was being boxed in and immediately Jasper started adapting instantly as he changed the rhythm and broke the pattern, he moved unpredictably and that was just enough to three them off. He took advantage and grabbed the first attacker's arm mid-strike and twisted it hard with great momentum as he slammed him into the second attacker and they both crashed together enough to disrupt their flow.

Jasper rushed to the door and yet the door did not open.

"Exit denied," the system voice echoed in a calm and unbothered tone. The attacker recovered too quickly, they were already repositioning and adapting to his change in strategy specifically designed for him. Jasper looked around the room quickly as he searched for anything or an edge. He spotted a loose panel hear one of the screens slightly ajar and barely noticeable. As he moved towards it, the attackers reacted instantly. One lunged, flashing his knife again. Jasper didn't dodge it but the blade cutted deep into his shoulder and used the momentum and drove forward slamming the attacker back into the wall. He reached the panel just in time and ripped it open with its wire exposed which was the system's access.

He grabbed the wires and yanked hard, lights flickered violently as the system glitched and the door mechanism sparked. The attacker hesitated for a fraction of a second and the door slid open halfway. Jasper dived through rolling on the ground outside and the door slammed behind him sealing itself again cutting off the attacker inside. Jasper stood up quickly breathing heavily with blood dripping from his shoulder. The silent town greeted him again, it wasn't just Eerie but hostile and he started moving immediately because staying back was a death sentence. And then he heard multiple footsteps, he turned ready to fight again but what he saw stopped him cold. There were figures emerging between buildings, there were not guards, soldiers or attackers but civilians or what used to be. They moved slowly with eyes unfocused and too silent.

They surrounded him gradually, just…closing in without attacking him. Jasper's instincts flare again because he knew something was wrong, one of them stepped closer as the head tilted and eyes locked on to him, and then he spoke with distorted voice which was quite unnatural

"Subject…confirmed…"

Jasper's chest tightened, the truth was unavoidable and this environment didn't just take note of him…it changed people.

As the silent figures close in and repeat his identity back to him…one horrifying realization takes hold; He didn't escape the system…

He just triggered something inside it.
