Chapter 72 - SUSPICIOUS WELCOME

Sometimes the safest walls hide the deepest distrust.

"What did you bring here?"

Elias's question hung in the command room as another explosion rocked the settlement and the walls shuddered and dust rained from the ceiling.

Outside, alarms screamed while panicked voices echoed through the streets. Jasper didn't answer immediately because the truth sounded unbelievable.

Elias grabbed his assault rifle from the wall.

"Everyone to defensive positions!"

His officers rushed out immediately as the command center became controlled chaos as maps were spread across tables and runners carried orders throughout the settlement.

Unlike every survivor group Jasper had encountered before—they were all organized and strategic. Immediately, watchtowers came alive as heavy machine guns rotated toward the tree line. Archers climbed elevated platforms and the medical teams established triage stations.

People isappeared into reinforced shelters beneath the central square. This wasn't just another camp but a fortress. Despite the emergency, several armed guards remained inside the command room watching Jasper's group. One woman with short gray hair and a weathered face stepped forward and her rifle never lowered.

"Who are they?"

Elias answered without looking away from the tactical map.

"They're guests."

She frowned.

"They're strangers." The emphasis was unmistakable.

The woman introduced herself simply.

"I'm Captain Clara."

Her eyes settled on Jasper.

"Since your people arrived…"

She glanced toward the explosions outside.

"…our perimeter was breached."

Mercer folded his arms.

"You saying that's our fault?"

"I'm saying I don't believe in coincidences."

The room grew noticeably colder.

"We didn't ask for this."

Clara looked at her calmly.

"No."

"But it followed you." She said

There was silence for a moment because everyone knew she wasn't entirely wrong.

Helix had tracked them and the evidence was impossible to deny.

"It came for me."

Every eye turned toward him.

"If anyone should leave…"

He looked toward the door.

"…it's me."

"No."

The voice came instantly, Elias stepped beside him.

"You don't walk away from family twice."

For the first time since their reunion—Jasper smiled. Elias placed a hand on Jasper's shoulder.

"I spent years believing I'd failed you."

He looked directly into his cousin's eyes.

"I'm not making that mistake again."

Jasper swallowed hard.

"So you'll risk everyone here?"

Elias answered without hesitation.

"I already decided that the second I saw you alive."

Captain Clara's jaw tightened.

"This settlement isn't yours alone."

She looked toward the council members gathering inside.

"There are two hundred and forty-three lives behind these walls."

Another council elder nodded.

"If keeping one man means losing everyone…"

He didn't finish his statement as the room split almost immediately. Some believed Jasper should stay and others wanted him gone before nightfall as voices rose and arguments spread. Fear took hold faster than reason.

"They tracked HIM."

"What happens when more come?"

"We survived six years before they arrived."

"We can't abandon people!"

"We can't sacrifice children!"

Everyone argued on top of their voices.

Kane climbed the eastern watchtower as his binoculars swept across the dead forest. At first there was nothing out there but after a while there were white flashes between trees and suddenly it was gone only to appear somewhere else

"They're not attacking."

One guard frowned.

"What are they doing?"

Kane watched carefully as his expression darkened.

"They're measuring us."

The Helix operatives remained beyond rifle range, watching every rotation, every patrol and every weak point. Like predators studying prey before deciding how to strike.

Inside the command center Jasper suddenly looked toward the eastern wall.

"They've got scouts in the water tower."

Clara frowned.

"What water tower?"

He pointed toward an old rusted structure nearly a kilometer away.

A sniper checked through a scope and seconds later hface changed.

"There are people there."

Everyone looked back at Jasper, he'd known them

Whispers spread quickly now.

"He's connected somehow."

"Maybe he's infected."

"No…he predicted it."

"What if he's one of them?"

Fear always searched for an easy target and Jasper had become the easiest one.

"He saved every person standing here."

Nobody answered because facts didn't always defeat fear.

Anthony gathered his commanders.

"We strengthen every perimeter."

Clara crossed her arms.

"And our guests?"

"They stay."

"For now?"

"For now." Elias answered

The words satisfied no one. As evening approached, Jasper's group finally saw how the camp functioned. Children attended makeshift classrooms, mechanics repaired wind turbines and farmers harvested vegetables from protected greenhouses. People laughed, cooked together and shared meals. It felt impossible like someone had preserved a small piece of the old world.

Mercer quietly looked around.

"I forgot people could live like this."

Jasper noticed the guards first, that there was too many of them and every entrance was heavily defended, the roof was occupied too and every civilian was trained to react instantly to alarms. This wasn't just caution but expectation. These people had been under pressure long before Helix arrived.

Late that evening, the brothers finally spoke alone. Inside a small maintenance workshop away from everyone else.

"I searched for you."

Elias handed Jasper an old photograph.

The edges were worn and damaged by water, it was a photograph of two young brothers before the world ended smiling.

"I carried this everywhere."

Jasper stared silently as fragments of forgotten memories returned.

"I blamed myself."

Elias looked toward the floor.

"They took you because I couldn't stop them."

Jasper shook his head slowly.

"The earth burned that day, only to also have people who were ready for that."

"I thought it was just the earthquake."

Silence settled between them and neither brother noticed the shadow outside the workshop. A figure stood perfectly still beyond the broken window listening, it was one of the settlement's own people and then it quietly disappeared into the darkness.

Later that night, Clara confronted Anthony.

"You trust him because he's your brother." Clara said

"I trust him because I know him." Anthony corrected

"You knew him." She continued

That distinction lingered.

"The boy you lost…"

She looked toward the sleeping quarters.

"…isn't necessarily the man who came back."

Elias had no answer because he'd been asking himself the same question. Meanwhile, Kane and Mercer inspected the eastern wall.

One guard suddenly called them over.

"You need to see this." They said

Fresh footprints were just outside the perimeter, hundreds of them in a formation none crossed into the camp.

Mercer frowned.

"So they came here…"

He looked around.

"…and then left?"

Kane slowly knelt beside the tracks as expression hardened.

"No."

He pointed toward the ground.

"They're still here."

The footprints ended abruptly as though the people making them had simply…disappeared without a sign of threat.

Near midnight—The settlement's warning bell rang once with a slow strike and every guard froze. A second strike echoed then a third.

Captain Cara's face turned pale.

"Impossible…"

Anthony grabbed his rifle.

"What is it?"

"The west gate…"

She looked toward the dark street.

"…someone opened it."

"But nobody was assigned there," a guard whispered, exactly.

The gate had been unlocked…from the inside.

Then screams erupted across the western district and people ran through the streets.

Lights flared to life.

Gunfire exploded.

And above the chaos—Every floodlight surrounding the settlement suddenly turned outward toward the forest.

Hundreds…

No—

Thousands…

of white eyes stared back from the darkness.

Then every light went out at once and the screams stopped.
