Sometimes the greatest miracle is not surviving the end of the world.
It's finding the person you spent years mourning.
"Anthony ."
"Your termination order remains active."
The mechanical voice echoed through the shattered western gate.
Dust rolled through the settlement as broken stone and twisted steel rained onto the streets. People scattered in every direction, guards raised their weapons while children screamed as parents dragged them toward underground shelters.
The settlement that had survived six years was once again under siege but Jasper heard none of it as his eyes were fixed on Anthony. His brother's face had gone completely white.
"You know that thing?" Jasper asked.
Anthony didn't answer immediately because his breathing had already become shallow. His hands trembled ever so slightly. Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, he said,
"I've been running from it since the first day of the apocalypse."
The armored figure stepped through the smoke with slow, deliberate movements and its armor was unlike Helix or Dominion technology. It had black alloy cover its body, etched with faded symbols older than any Jasper had seen and its glowing crimson eyes scanned the battlefield. It confirmed its target as Antony.
"Recovery protocol resumed."
Ryker immediately drew both curved blades and his usually calm expression vanished.
"Elias!"
"Get everyone behind the second barricade now!"
The settlement moved instantly as it was no longer about defending walls but about surviving the next few minutes. Anthony stepped forward.
"No."
Jasper grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
Anthony looked at his Elder brother.
A sad smile crossed his face.
"If it came for me…"
"It doesn't have to reach anyone else."
"No."
Jasper's voice hardened.
"I just got you back."
"I'm not losing you again."
For the first time in years, Anthony saw the big brother who had sacrificed everything to protect him.
The sight brought back another day, Fifteen years earlier. Smoke filled the streets with wailing sirens and their mother was crying.Jasper had pulled Anthony behind him.
"I'll always protect you."
The promise echoed in Jasper's heart. He had failed once and wouldn't fail again. Jasper slowly placed both hands on Anthony's shoulders.
"You know what hurts the most?" Jasper asked
Anthony shook his head.
"I missed every birthday."
"Every victory."
"Every mistake."
"I wasn't there."
Anthony felt tears burning behind his eyes.
"You were alive."
Jasper nodded.
"So were you."
Both brothers laughed quietly through their tears. For one impossible moment—the apocalypse disappeared. She watched silently without words or interruption. Some reunions deserved silence as Mercer quietly wiped at one eye. Kane looked away.
"I'm not crying."
Mercer smirked.
"Sure."
Even the mysterious armored hunter stopped advancing. Almost…Curious and then it spoke again.
"Emotional attachment confirmed."
"Probability of compliance increased."
Jasper immediately understood.
"It's studying us."
Anthony finally looked toward everyone.
"I never told anyone why it chased me."
Ryker lowered one blade.
"You don't have to."
"Yes."
Anthony's eyes settled on Jasper.
"He deserves the truth."
"After Blackpoint…"
Anthony began quietly.
"…I didn't escape alone."
"There were scientists, military personnel and children."
"We found something."
His voice grew heavier.
"Something Obsidian wanted buried."
The scientist from Obsidian looked terrified.
"No…"
Anthony nodded.
"A database."
"It contained every classified project." Including, Helix, Dominion and Nemesis.
"And…"
Anthony looked directly at Jasper.
"The Interface Program."
Silence fell over the command room.
"I copied the files."
Anthony slowly tapped the side of his head.
"I couldn't carry the database."
"So they encrypted it."
Jasper frowned.
"Where?"
Anthony smiled sadly.
"In me."
"They implanted a biological storage key."
Ryker answered before anyone else could.
"The files are literally part of his nervous system."
The scientist whispered,
"My God…"
Anthony nodded.
"Every faction has been hunting me ever since."
Later, while the settlement reinforced its walls, Anthony and Jasper walked along the outer defenses. The sky had grown dark again and rain began falling softly.
Anthony smiled.
"You've gotten muncher older."
Jasper laughed.
"Really?"
"Okay…maybe older."
They both laughed.
"You still hate mushrooms?"
Jasper blinked.
"You remember that?"
"I remember you hiding them under the table."
Jasper smiled wider than he had in years.
"I'm sorry."
Anthony stopped walking.
"For what?"
"I stopped looking."
Anthony immediately shook his head.
"No."
"I wanted you to survive."
"Not spend your life chasing ghosts."
Jasper looked down.
"I hated myself."
Anthony stepped closer.
"So did I."
Then the brothers embraced again, longer this time and without words because some wounds healed better in silence. Elias watched from nearby.
He smiled quietly.
Then walked over.
"So…"
Anthony looked toward him.
"You must be Elias."
Elias nodded.
"I found him after Blackpoint."
Anthony extended his hand.
"Thank you."
Elias ignored the handshake.
Instead—he pulled Anthony into a hug.
"I protected him because someone had to."
Anthony smiled.
"You did well."
Jasper laughed.
Mercer walked past.
"Poor guy."
Laughter spread through the nearby guards. It felt…Normal. Something none of them had experienced in years. Ryker interrupted gently.
"We don't have much time."
Everyone became serious again.
"The hunter didn't attack."
"No."
"It confirmed Anthony."
"And left."
Captain Mara frowned.
"Why?"
Ryker's answer chilled everyone.
"Because it was reporting."
Jasper's eyes flickered faintly blue receiving signals and then suddenly, he looked toward the northern hills.
"They're moving."
Kane grabbed binoculars.
"What do you see?"
Jasper answered quietly.
"Not Helix."
The clouds overhead began swirling unnaturally as lightning flashed without thunder, birds exploded from distant trees escaping. Something enormous was approaching from the north.
A scout sprinted through the settlement gates bleeding heavily and was barely able to stand.
He collapsed at Elias's feet.
"They're…"
He coughed blood.
"…coming."
Elias knelt.
"Who?"
The scout looked directly at Jasper as pure terror filled his eyes.
"They're carrying…"
His voice broke.
"…your father's flag."
Then, beyond the northern ridge—hundreds of figures appeared. Each carried a black banner marked with a silver phoenix. A symbol no one recognized except Anthony.
His face drained of all color.
"No…"
Jasper turned toward him.
"What is it?"
Anthony whispered the answer.
"They found the Phoenix Protocol."
Then the lead figure at the front of the army removed his hood. Jasper's breath caught. The man had his father's face.
