One leader can inspire hope. Two leaders must first learn to trust each other.
"Designation J-02… you've finally come home."
The words echoed through the settlement and no one moved. The cryogenic chamber hissed as freezing vapor spilled across the broken stone of the central square. The man inside stepped out slowly. His face… Jasper's face, he had the same jawline, same eyes and the same height. The same scar above the right eyebrow as he did, it was like staring into a living mirror. The only difference was that his eyes glowed an unnatural blue. Every rifle in the square snapped upward and just in time Captain Clara shouted first.
"Hold your fire!"
And nobody obeyed because fear had already taken control. The mysterious man calmly looked around the settlement studying everyone. Then his gaze settled on Jasper.
"I have searched for you."
His voice was calm and almost gentle. Anthony immediately stepped in front of Jasper.
"You'll have to go through me."
The stranger tilted his head.
"You always did Anthony."
Anthony froze.
"How do you know me?"
The man looked toward Anthony and then smiled faintly.
"You carried him when he fell into the river."
Jasper's breathing stopped.
Only Jasper knew that story.
It had happened when Anthony was six, there was no records or witnesses, only family.
Anthony slowly stepped backward.
"What are you?"
The stranger looked almost disappointed.
"My designation was Echo."
"I was the first successful synchronization subject."
The Obsidian scientist stumbled backward.
"No…"
"You remember." Echo looked toward him.
The scientist whispered,
"We destroyed every prototype…" "Not every one." Echo smiled.
Echo turned back toward Jasper. "You are J-02."
"The second successful Interface."
Silence crushed the square as Jasper shook his head.
"No.
"I was born." Jasper answered.
Echo nodded. "Yes." "You were."
There was confusion for a moment as Stacy frowned .
"Explain." Echo walked slowly around the square.
"They failed to create artificial synchronization."
"So they changed direction."
"They engineered compatible bloodlines instead."
Anthony looked horrified.
"No…"
Echo met his eyes.
"Your father volunteered."
The words hit like an explosion.
"He wasn't forced."
"He wasn't manipulated." Jasper replied
"He chose." Echo said
Jasper's chest tightened
"He believed humanity needed someone capable of stopping what was coming."
"He sacrificed our family…" Anthony whispered,
Echo looked at him sadly.
"He sacrificed himself."
People began whispering again.
"Engineered?"
"Interface?"
"What does that even mean?"
Captain Clara stepped between the crowd and the brothers.
"Enough."
"We deal with facts and not rumors here."
Later, inside the command hall, Jasper and Anthony sat alone.
Neither spoke for several minutes and finally Anthony sighed.
"You thinking what I'm thinking?"
Jasper nodded.
"Nothing about our childhood was normal."
Anthony laughed bitterly.
"That explains a lot."
Elias entered carrying fresh reports.
"Scouts are back."
"The valley is changing."
Maps covered the command table, there are several patrols including the Helix and the Dominion's and also destroyed settlements and unknown movements.
Jasper immediately focused on the patterns while Anthony focused on people.
"Food routes, safe villages and water sources."
They approached the same problem differently.Ryker watched quietly and then smiled
"There it is."
Stacy looked at him.
"What?"
"The difference."
He pointed toward the brothers.
"Jasper sees battles while Anthony sees survivors."
Both are necessary.
A scout burst into the room.
"Three refugees reached the southern checkpoint."
Captain Clara frowned.
"We don't have enough food."
Anthony answered immediately.
"We let them in."
Jasper looked toward the supply reports.
"We'll run short in twelve days."
"I know." Anthony nodded.
"We still let them in."
Everyone waited for Jasper.
He looked at the numbers and then at Anthony and then toward the frightened refugees outside.
Finally—He nodded
"They stay."
The decision spread quickly as people whispered.
"The brothers agreed."
"They work together."
"They're different."
"But they balance each other."
And for the first time since Jasper arrived—The settlement began trusting him. Anthony gathered teenagers from the settlement teaching them first aid, fire building, tracking and survival while Jasper taught strategy, formation, observation and planning. Together—they built something stronger.
That evening the brothers stood atop the northern wall watching the sunset.
Anthony smiled.
"You know…"
"I dreamed about this." He continued
"What?"
"Standing beside you again."
Jasper looked at the horizon.
"So did I."
Jasper extended his hand.
"No more secrets."
Anthony shook it.
"No more leaving each other behind."
The handshake became an embrace. Elias watched from below as he smiled quietly and then Stacy joined him.
"They're finally healing."
He nodded.
"And just in time."
Far beyond the settlement, a lone observer lowered a pair of binoculars. Hidden among the cliffs, he quietly activated an encrypted transmitter.
"Confirmation."
"The brothers have united."
A distorted voice answered.
"Probability of resistance?"
The observer looked toward the settlement.
"Higher than predicted."
"Recommendation?"
The observer answered without emotion after a few seconds.
"Separate them."
That night, Jasper woke suddenly from the interface as thousands of signals exploded through his mind simultaneously. He staggered outside as the night sky had changed. Far across the horizon were dozens of enormous pillars of blue light shot into the clouds one after another across the continent. Ancient facilities were activating as Echo walked beside him quietly.
"It has already begun."
Jasper looked toward him.
"What has happened?" Jasper asked him
Echo answered with a single sentence.
"The other Interfaces are waking."
Then—one pillar of blue light suddenly changed, turning blood red. A voice echoed inside Jasper's mind, it was that of a child's voice weak and terrified
"Jasper…"
"…please don't let them find me."
Then the signal vanished, Echo slowly closed his eyes.
"They found another one."
