The strongest fortress is not built from steel. It is built from people who refuse to stand alone. At 00:00:30. The glowing countdown on the girl's backpack flashed bright crimson as every second echoed like a gunshot, yet Anthony didn't hesitate.
"Everybody, MOVE!" He said. The square erupted into chaos as guards rushed civilians toward cover and children were swept into reinforced shelters. Captain Clara barked orders with practiced precision.
"Clear the north gate!"
"Snipers, cover the approach!"
"No one touches the girl!"
The teenager lay unconscious just outside the gate, her breathing shallow, the backpack was still counting down to 00:00:24. Jasper stepped forward and Echo grabbed his arm.
"Don't, if it's a proximity trigger…" Jasper pulled free. "If we leave her there, she dies."
Anthony was already beside him. "So do we."
The brothers exchanged a single look without any argument or hesitation as they all ran together. The heavy northern gate groaned open just wide enough for the two brothers to slip through. Ryker followed without permission.
"So much for staying behind," Mercer muttered as he grabbed his rifle.
Stacy glared at him. "You're staying."
He sighed and then said "I knew you were going to say that."
Outside the walls, the wind carried ash across the cracked highway. The unconscious girl looked no older than sixteen, her clothes were torn as bruises covered her arms. There were restraint marks around both wrists which looked like she had escaped someone or something.
00:00:18 the countdown was still ongoing
Anthony dropped beside her, as the backpack wasn't military except for the blinking device bolted inside it, Jasper knelt beside him.
"Can you remove it?"
Anthony shook his head. "The straps are wired."
Echo's voice came through Jasper's earpiece. "Don't cut anything."
Jasper reached toward the device. The moment his fingers brushed the metal, his ision exploded into blue light as data flooded his mind with coordinates and encrypted signals and biometric locks.
Helix coding and then a child's frightened voice.
"Help me…"
Jasper gasped and pulled back. "I know what this is."
Anthony looked at him. "What?" "It's not a bomb."
00:00:11 "It's a beacon."
Echo's face hardened. "Worse." He said
The countdown reached zero and yet nothing exploded. The backpack emitted a brilliant pillar of blue light that shot into the sky. The beam could be seen for miles after heartbeat later— the device shattered itself into dust.
Mercer blinked. "…That's it?"
Echo slowly looked toward the eastern horizon. "No, now they know exactly where we are."A scout screamed from the watchtower. "They are coming!"
Everyone turned as dark shapes emerged from the ruined forest. Captain Clara slammed the gate shut.
"Battle stations!"
The settlement transformed in seconds as farmers became defenders, the mechanics all of a sudden carried ammunition, teenagers hauled water to the walls and the medics prepared treatment stations. No one was told what to do as months of preparation had become instinct. Anthony watched the organized movement and smiled.
"They've changed."
"So have we." Jasper nodded.
The unconscious teenager finally opened her eyes and glowed a soft blue before fading. She panicked immediately.
"No!" "They're coming!" She shouted
Stacy gently held her shoulders. "You're safe."
The girl looked around desperately. "No…" "No one is safe."
She looked at Jasper and then Echo as recognition flashed across her face. "You…" She pointed weakly. "…You're J-02." Tears filled her eyes. "They told us you were dead."
"My name is Jasper." Jasper nodded slowly.
"My name…" She struggled to speak. "…is Lily."
Echo closed his eyes. "They gave you a real name." She nodded. "One scientist refused to call us by numbers."
Anthony exchanged a glance with Jasper. "They experimented on children." "They always did." Echo answered quietly.
The alarm bells echoed again to notify everyone that the enemy would arrive within minutes. Anthony climbed onto a supply crate overlooking the square.
"Listen to me!" The settlement fell silent.
"You don't need to be stronger than them."
"You only need to be stronger than you were yesterday."
He pointed toward the walls. "Protect the person beside you." "Fight for the people behind you."
"Nobody stands alone."
The crowd answered with determined cheers. For the first time, leadership divided naturally as Anthony moved among the defenders, encouraging each person and calming fear. Jasper remained inside the command center studying maps.
Elias smiled.
"You two really are different."
Jasper looked toward Anthony through the command center window. "That's why it works."
The attackers emerged from the trees. It was the Autonomous combat drones, dozens of them that looked spider-like, it was machines with glowing red optics. Captain Clara frowned.
"They're probing our defenses." Jasper shook his head.
"No." "They're measuring response time."
"Archers!"
"Wait!" Anthony shouted.
The defenders held their fire. Thirty meters, twenty-five and twenty.
"NOW!"
Arrows darkened the sky as several drones collapsed instantly before the remaining machines recovered—Rifle fire erupted from hidden positions and then homemade explosives detonated beneath the road. The attack dissolved in seconds not because they were stronger but because everyone acted together without panic and without confusion.
Ryker smiled. "Now they're becoming dangerous."
As darkness settled, fires burned along the walls. The attack had been repelled with no casualties whatsoever only minor injuries, it was a victory but more importantly—proof. The settlement was no longer just surviving but was becoming something greater as Anthony stood beside Jasper overlooking the valley.
"You built this." He saw id
"We built this." Jasper shook his head.
Anthony smiled. "I like that answer better."
Yet deep beneath the earth and far below the settlement…The Ancient machinery awakened completely as massive gears turned for the first time in decades. Power surged through forgotten corridors and a sealed vault opened. Inside were hundreds of cryogenic chambers which illuminated simultaneously. One after another, rows stretched farther than the eye could see and most remained occupied, children, teenagers and adults. Every one of them carried the Interface designation and a central monitor got activated and displayed interface ark online. A calm artificial voice echoed through the underground facility that a primary subject J-02 has been confirmed as well as secondary subject J-03 and that its genetic lineage restoration was at 41%. Then a final line appeared across every screen. INTERFACE ARK ONLINE.

…DR. NATHAN Armstrong.
Jasper's father.
The man everyone believed had died before the apocalypse. Above ground, Jasper suddenly froze as a familiar voice whispered inside his mind in a fatherly tone.
"If you're hearing this, son… I'm still alive."
