Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: No Way Out

Jayden stared at Amara.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The air between them felt heavier now—like something was about to break.

"You said you want the truth," Jayden finally said, his voice low.

Amara nodded.

"All of it."

He took a slow breath.

"Alright… then listen carefully. Because once I say this… you can't unhear it."

She didn't flinch.

"I'm not going anywhere."

Jayden almost smiled at that.

Almost.

"I grew up around this," he started. "Not just seeing it… living in it. The fights, the tension, the beef… all of it."

Amara stayed quiet, letting him speak.

"At first, it was just survival," he continued. "You learn quick where you can go, who you can talk to, what colors you can wear… stupid stuff like that."

He shook his head slightly.

"But it's never really small. Not where I'm from."

"What changed?" Amara asked softly.

Jayden's expression darkened.

"I did."

"There was a time I got involved," he admitted. "Not because I wanted to… but because I felt like I had to."

He looked at her.

"You ever feel like the world already decided who you're supposed to be… before you even get a chance to choose?"

Amara hesitated.

"…Yeah."

Jayden nodded.

"That's what it felt like."

A pause.

"And once you step into that life… even just a little…"

His voice dropped.

"It doesn't let you go."

Amara's eyes searched his.

"So those guys…"

"They're part of something bigger," Jayden said. "And I crossed a line."

"How?"

Jayden clenched his jaw.

"I stopped playing along."

That confused her.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I started focusing on music. Staying out the way. Not showing up when they expected me to. Not reacting when they wanted me to."

"And that's enough to make them come after you?"

Jayden gave a bitter half-smile.

"In that world? Yeah."

"They don't see it as leaving," he added. "They see it as disrespect."

Amara's expression shifted.

"So they're trying to… what? Scare you?"

Jayden shook his head slowly.

"No."

A pause.

"They're trying to remind me I'm still theirs."

That hit hard.

Amara stepped closer again.

"You're not," she said firmly.

Jayden looked at her.

"You don't understand—"

"No," she cut in, "you don't understand."

That surprised him.

"You think because you came from that, it owns you forever?" she continued. "That's not how life works."

Jayden exhaled.

"It is where I'm from."

"Then leave."

Simple.

Direct.

Almost impossible.

Jayden let out a dry laugh.

"You think I haven't thought about that?"

"Then why haven't you?"

"Because it's not just me!"

His voice rose again before he controlled it.

"It's my family. People I grew up with. You don't just disappear and expect everything to be okay."

Amara softened slightly.

"But staying… isn't okay either."

That silence again.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

True.

That's when Jayden's phone buzzed.

Once.

Twice.

He pulled it out.

Dre.

Jayden answered immediately.

"Yeah?"

Dre's voice came through low and urgent.

"Where you at?"

Jayden frowned.

"Why?"

"Just answer."

Jayden glanced at Amara, then back down the street.

"Outside near the food spot."

A pause.

Then—

"You need to move."

Jayden's expression changed instantly.

"What happened?"

"They circling again."

Jayden's head snapped up.

Scanning.

Watching.

Every instinct kicked in.

"You sure?" he asked.

"I just saw the car pass twice," Dre replied. "This not random."

Jayden's jaw tightened.

"Alright."

"Hurry," Dre added. "And don't be alone."

The call ended.

Amara was already watching him.

"What is it?"

Jayden grabbed her hand without thinking.

"We gotta go."

"What—"

"Now."

Something in his tone made her stop asking questions.

They started moving fast down the street.

"Where are we going?" Amara asked, trying to keep up.

"Somewhere safe."

"You said that before," she replied.

Jayden didn't answer.

Because he wasn't sure anywhere was safe anymore.

Then—

They heard it.

An engine.

Slow.

Too slow.

Jayden turned his head slightly.

Same car.

"Don't run," Jayden said quickly.

"What?"

"Just walk. Fast."

Amara's heart started pounding.

"But—"

"Trust me."

That word again.

Trust.

She swallowed.

And followed his lead.

The car rolled closer.

Windows tinted.

Watching.

Waiting.

Jayden kept walking.

Acting normal.

Even though everything inside him was on edge.

"Stay close," he muttered.

Amara moved closer to his side.

The car slowed beside them.

For a second—

Everything stopped.

Jayden could feel it.

This was it.

This was where it could go wrong.

Fast.

A loud horn blasted from behind.

Another car.

Interrupting.

The moment broke.

The car beside them hesitated—

Then drove off.

Jayden didn't wait.

"Move."

They turned the corner quickly, disappearing into another street.

Only when they were out of sight did he finally stop.

Breathing heavy.

Thinking.

Calculating.

Amara looked at him.

Eyes wide.

"This is real…" she whispered.

Jayden nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

No more hiding.

No more pretending.

Amara stepped closer.

Closer than before.

"You said you wanted out," she said.

"I do."

"Then we figure it out."

Jayden looked at her.

Conflicted.

"You don't have to do this."

"I know," she replied.

A pause.

"But I'm choosing to.

Jayden exhaled slowly.

Because now—

It wasn't just his fight anymore.

And that made everything…

More dangerous.
