The shadows in the arena started moving all wrong right after that big energy burst. Lights were still on up top, and those runes on the floor glowed a little, like they were supposed to hold everything together. But nothing felt right.
At first people just stared, not getting it. A student whispered something about what that was. Kael could not catch his breath at all. His chest tightened up, like someone was squeezing it on purpose. He muttered no under his breath.
Rhea asked him what he did, her voice cutting through all the noise. He tried to say he didnt, but the words stuck. Deep down he knew this mess was his fault somehow.
The ground pulsed again, dark lines cracking over the runes. Those magic circles flickered bad, like they could not handle whatever was pushing back. Lucien looked sharp, eyes going from Kael to the dark spots shifting around.
This isnt some normal mana thing, Lucien said, sounding uptight. Its coming from outside us. Rhea snapped back asking what that even meant. He explained it wasnt from anyone there.
Then a scream hit, and one student dropped, holding his head. More followed, one after another. Someone yelled whats happening. The air turned cold all at once, not slow like usual. Frost showed up on the stone edges, breaths puffed out visible. Lights flickered a couple times and got dimmer.
Shadows got deeper too. The instructor told everyone to back off from the center, his voice steady but you could hear the fear. No one fought it, they all stumbled away, fear kicking in hard.
Kael stayed put though, frozen in place. The shadows were not just moving now, they pulled together at one end, getting thick and shaped, darker than empty space. It had some kind of form, not clear though.
Rhea whispered what is that thing. Lucien stayed quiet for once, looking unsure. Kael's heart was pounding, he asked who they are, but under his breath. The word watchers came to him somehow, sending a chill right through.
Lucien said suddenly they are reacting to you. Kael froze again, what. Lucien stepped up close, ignoring the mess. Your power spiked and they showed, not a coincidence. Kael snapped he didnt call anything. Then explain it, Lucien shot back. I cant, Kael said.
The thing moved then, not walking or running, more like glitching ahead. One blink it was far, next it was way closer. A student screamed right in front of it. Instructor yelled get back and threw mana at it, but the blast went right through, like it was nothing.
Thats impossible, Lucien whispered. The creature kind of tilted its head slow, toward Kael. No, Kael stepped back. It sees you, something inside said. I dont want this, he shouted. It lunged faster this time, no stopping.
Rhea yelled move and fire burst from her hands, a big wave at it. But the flames just got swallowed up. What, her eyes went wide. Its absorbing it, Lucien shouted. He twisted space in front, folding it in hard. Get away from him.
The hit made it flicker, form breaking a bit. But then it came back, stronger, even closer. Kael could not budge, body frozen in place. Something inside him knew it though. Its not here to kill you. What. Its here to claim you. Claim me?
The limb stretched out long and wrong, air warping around it. Rhea screamed his name. Time felt slow, thoughts all blurry. That presence inside rose up.
Let me handle this.
No.
You will die otherwise.
I dont care. Liar.
It was right there now, reaching hungry.
Say my name boy.
No.
Say it.
I said no.
Power exploded out of Kael, dark and wild, shaking everything. Shadows pulled back. The creature stopped, just watched. Then it bowed slow.
Silence dropped heavy. Everyone stared, not getting why. Rhea whispered why did it. Lucien looked at Kael, what are you, quiet.
Kael had no answer, he didnt know. Inside something laughed low, satisfied.
They recognize you now.
His hands shook. Stop.
You cant stop what you are.
The thing faded into shadows again. Before gone, it spoke in his head. The gate opens soon[1]. What gate, Kael thought, breath catching. But it was away.
Shadows went normal, cold left, lights steadied. Then noise blew up. What was that. Call the headmaster. That wasnt just a creature.
Instructor turned sharp, everyone out now. They rushed the doors. Kael stayed, mind on the gate opens soon. What does that mean, he whispered. No answer.
Across the way, Seraphine stood still, watching him. Her calm face cracked a little, eyes glowing faint gold. So its starting, she said soft. No one heard but something deep in the dark, and it answered
Yes.
It seems like things are picking up now, but I am not sure how it all connects yet. The watchers part feels kind of off, like maybe I missed something there.
