Chapter 1 - THE UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER

Lena had exactly twenty-four hours before she lost everything.

The eviction notice lay open on the small wooden table in her apartment, the bold red letters impossible to ignore. Final Notice. The words seemed to burn into her eyes the longer she stared at them.

She didn't need to read it again. She already knew every line.

If payment was not made by tomorrow, she would be forced to vacate the premises immediately.

Lena let out a slow breath, her fingers tightening slightly around the edge of the paper. The room felt smaller than usual, as though the walls were closing in on her, pressing the reality of her situation deeper into her chest.

"This can't be happening…" she whispered.

But it was.

Her gaze drifted around the apartment—the worn couch in the corner, the small kitchen space, the narrow window that barely let in enough light. It wasn't much, but it was hers. The only place that had felt remotely stable in a life that had been anything but.

And now, she was about to lose it.

She leaned back in her chair, pressing her fingers to her temples as a headache began to form. Her thoughts raced, jumping from one possibility to another, each more hopeless than the last.

Her job barely covered her daily expenses.

Her savings were gone—completely drained by her father's hospital bills.

And there was no one she could turn to.

No family who could help.

No friends who had that kind of money.

She was on her own.

"I need a miracle," she muttered under her breath.

As if in response, her phone buzzed against the table.

The sudden sound made her flinch.

For a moment, she simply stared at it, her heart beating a little faster. Then she reached for it, her brows furrowing slightly when she saw the notification.

An unknown number.

Lena hesitated.

Normally, she would have ignored it. These days, unknown messages usually meant scams, reminders, or bad news she didn't have the energy to deal with.

But something made her open it.

Her breath caught slightly as she read the message.

"If you need money, I have an offer for you."

She blinked.

"What kind of message is this?" she murmured, frowning at the screen.

Before she could think too much about it, another message appeared.

"Meet me today. 2 PM. Cole Corporation."

Her heart skipped.

Cole Corporation?

That wasn't just any company.

That was one of the most powerful corporations in the city—owned by a man whose name was known almost everywhere.

Aiden Cole.

Young. Wealthy. Influential. Untouchable.

A man who existed in a completely different world from hers.

"This has to be a mistake," Lena said quietly, shaking her head.

There was no logical reason why someone like that would be contacting her.

No connection.

No overlap.

Nothing.

And yet,

Another message came through.

"Come alone. Don't be late."

Short. Direct. Final.

Lena stared at the screen, her thoughts spinning.

This was insane.

Completely insane.

It could be a scam. A trap. Something dangerous.

But…

Her eyes drifted back to the eviction notice on the table.

Twenty-four hours.

That was all she had left.

She swallowed hard, her grip tightening around her phone.

"What choice do I even have?" she whispered.

By the time Lena stood in front of the Cole Corporation building, her heart wouldn't stop racing.

The structure towered above her, sleek glass reflecting the afternoon sunlight in a way that made it seem almost untouchable. People in expensive suits walked in and out with purpose, their movements confident, their lives clearly far removed from hers.

For a moment, Lena hesitated at the entrance.

She felt out of place.

Small.

Like she didn't belong anywhere near this world.

But then she thought about her apartment.

The notice.

The ticking clock.

And just like that, hesitation wasn't an option anymore.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped inside.

The difference was immediate.

Cool air brushed against her skin, and everything around her seemed polished to perfection—marble floors, clean lines, quiet conversations. Even the lighting felt deliberate, soft yet precise.

She became aware of the subtle glances directed her way.

Judging.

Curious.

She ignored them and walked toward the reception desk.

"Can I help you?" the receptionist asked politely, though her tone carried a hint of distance.

Lena straightened slightly. "I have a meeting with Mr. Cole."

The woman's expression shifted, just for a second.

"Name?"

"Lena."

There was a brief pause as the receptionist checked something on her computer.

Then—

"You're expected."

Lena blinked.

Expected?

That word didn't sit right with her.

"Top floor," the receptionist added.

"Thank you," Lena said, though her unease had only grown.

The elevator ride felt longer than it should have.

Each passing floor made her more aware of what she was about to do.

Her reflection stared back at her from the mirrored walls—simple clothes, tired eyes, someone who clearly didn't belong in a place like this.

"What am I doing…" she murmured softly.

The doors opened with a quiet sound.

The atmosphere on the top floor was different.

Quieter.

More controlled.

Almost intimidating.

"Right on time."

The voice came from behind her.

Lena turned slowly.

And everything shifted.

Aiden Cole stood a few feet away, his presence commanding the space without effort.

He was tall, his posture relaxed yet firm, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit that spoke of wealth and precision. But it wasn't his appearance that held her attention.

It was his gaze.

Sharp. Observant. Unreadable.

Like he could see through every layer she tried to hide behind.

"You're late," he said calmly.

Lena blinked, caught off guard. "I'm not—"

"Thirty seconds."

Her lips parted, then pressed together.

"…Sorry."

Aiden didn't respond. Instead, he turned and walked toward his office, clearly expecting her to follow.

She hesitated for a split second before doing so.

"Sit," he said once they were inside.

The word wasn't loud, but it carried authority.

Lena sat.

Her heart pounded as she looked at him, trying to make sense of the situation she had walked into.

This was him.

The Aiden Cole.

And she was alone in a room with him.

"You're in debt," he said bluntly.

Her body stiffened.

"Yes."

"About to be evicted."

"…Yes."

"No one to help you."

She didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Aiden studied her for a moment before leaning back slightly.

"Good."

Her brows furrowed. "Good?"

"It means you have no room to refuse."

A chill ran down her spine.

"What exactly are you offering?" she asked carefully.

Aiden reached into his desk and pulled out a document, placing it in front of her.

"A contract."

Lena stared at it, her pulse quickening.

"A contract for what?"

Aiden's eyes locked onto hers.

And for the first time—

There was something dangerous in them.

"Marriage."

The word hit her like a shockwave.

Lena blinked, certain she had misheard.

"I'm sorry… what?"

"I need a wife," he said calmly. "You need money."

Her heart began to race.

This wasn't just unexpected.

It was unreal.

"Why me?" she asked, her voice barely steady.

Aiden didn't hesitate.

"Because you're desperate."

The truth stung.

But she couldn't deny it.

Silence filled the room, heavy and suffocating.

Lena looked down at the contract again, her mind racing.

This man

This situation

This offer

None of it made sense.

And yet…

She had a feeling this encounter

Was about to change her life in ways she couldn't even begin to imagine.
