Alarms wailed across the Central Military Hub as hundreds of infected poured toward the northwest perimeter. Searchlights swept the darkness, illuminating a nightmare tide: over a hundred shamblers mixed with at least a dozen mutated variants. Several intelligent ones moved at the rear, clicking and gesturing like crude generals, directing the horde with unnatural coordination.
"Man the walls!" Colonel Voss's voice boomed over every speaker. "All able personnel to defensive positions! Priority targets are the smart variants, take them down and the rest lose cohesion!"
Ted and Elena sprinted toward the northwest section along with dozens of other defenders. Soldiers manned heavy machine guns and automated turrets, while civilians and awakened personnel took positions with rifles, pipes, and whatever weapons they could grab.
Marcus was already there, bat in hand, shouting orders to his small crew. His eyes found Ted immediately. "Stay where I can see you, Harlan. Let's see how 'lucky' you really are tonight."
Ted ignored him, climbing the reinforced walkway. His **Basic Horde Sense** painted a terrifying picture: the horde was massive, with multiple intelligent variants coordinating waves. Lesser zombies registered as a sea of dull hunger.
The first wave crashed against the walls.
Gunfire erupted in a deafening roar. Turrets spat streams of bullets, mowing down dozens of shamblers. But the mutated variants pushed forward, armored ones shrugging off small arms fire, acidic spitters melting sections of barricade, and fast clawed types attempting to scale the walls.
Ted fought on the front line beside Elena. His boosted stats let him swing his pipe with devastating force, caving skulls and clearing space for soldiers to reload. He absorbed essence from every kill he could reach, the cold energy fueling him through the chaos.

As a group of fifteen lesser zombies surged toward a weakening section of wall, Ted saw his chance. While the defenders focused on the larger threats, he activated **Basic Horde Command**, spending 50 Essence to target a cluster of eight lesser infected: *Turn. Attack the armored variant on your left.*
The command took hold unevenly, five of the zombies lurched and redirected, slamming clumsily into one of the armored mutants and creating a momentary gap in the enemy formation. The variant roared in confusion as its own "troops" turned on it.
The defenders capitalized instantly, pouring fire into the distracted mutant.
Elena glanced at Ted, eyes wide with understanding, but said nothing.
Marcus, fighting nearby, noticed the odd movement. "What the hell was that? They turned on their own again, right near Harlan!"
No one had time to investigate. A new wave hit, twenty more infected, led by two intelligent variants working in tandem. One directed a climbing attempt while the other spat acid at the base of the wall, weakening the structure.
The situation grew desperate. A section of barricade began to crumble. Soldiers shouted for reinforcements.
Ted made a risky decision. He moved to the edge of the collapsing section and poured 70 Essence into a stronger **Basic Horde Command**, targeting twelve lesser zombies in the front ranks: *Climb the wall and attack the acid-spitter from behind.*
The command hit harder this time. Several zombies broke from the main horde and began scrambling up the damaged section, directly toward the acid-spitter variant. The defenders were forced to fight both the climbing infected and the main wave, but the distraction allowed a team to flank and eliminate the acid-spitter.
The wall held, barely.
Ted absorbed essence from multiple kills during the frenzy, the surges coming faster now.

His total climbed past 650. The constant use of Horde Command was draining but rewarding, the skill felt sharper with every activation.
As the horde's momentum finally broke and the remaining infected were mowed down or scattered, cheers rose along the wall. The hub had repelled the siege, though at the cost of several injured and one fallen defender.
Colonel Voss surveyed the aftermath from the command post. "Good work. Repair teams, fix that breach immediately. All fighters, stand down but stay ready. We may see another wave before dawn."
Marcus approached Ted as the defenders dispersed, Jax right behind him. "I saw what you did out there. Those zombies didn't just get confused, they obeyed something. You're doing it, aren't you? Controlling them."
Ted met his gaze evenly, exhaustion helping sell the act. "I was fighting for my life, same as you. The dead are unpredictable. Be glad we held the line."
Marcus's eyes burned with certainty. "The colonel will hear about this. And Dr. Thorne. Your little act is over, Harlan."
Elena stepped between them. "Let it go, Marcus. We just survived a siege. Focus on that."
As the night cycle continued, Ted retreated to a quiet corner to recover. The System rewarded the heavy usage:
*[Basic Horde Command proficiency increased.]*
*[Emergency Quest: Avoid Observation – Progress: Delayed by siege. +60 Necro Essence.]*
But the cost was clear. Marcus now had more "evidence." The next scan or report could seal Ted's fate.
Elena found him later. "You used it on a bigger scale tonight. It worked… but Marcus saw too much. We're running out of time here."
Ted nodded, the weight of the hub's walls feeling heavier than ever.
The dead had been pushed back.
But inside, the real siege on his secret was only intensifying.
