Chapter 38 - The threshold

Ted spent the next two days moving like a ghost through the densest parts of the ruined financial district. He avoided main roads, stayed in elevated or underground positions when possible, and used every trick his growing abilities offered. **Shadow Step** (the temporary stealth buff) combined with **Minor Flesh Crafting** made him nearly invisible to casual observation.

During those days, he fed carefully but consistently. Small groups of lesser zombies became his silent meals. Each harvest brought essence and pushed the hunger back, while also inching him closer to the next evolution.

By the end of the second day, his status looked like this:

**Host: Ted Harlan**

**Level: 2**

**Strength: 23**

**Agility: 22**

**Vitality: 23**

**Necro Essence: 1,612**

**Skills:**

- Basic Undead Regeneration (Passive - Low)

- Enhanced Regeneration I (Passive)

- Minor Flesh Crafting (Active – Upgraded)

- Basic Horde Sense (Passive)

- Basic Horde Command (Active – Weak)

- Undead Resilience I (Passive)

He had crossed 1,600 Essence. The System had been teasing the Level 3 threshold for days, and now it finally felt within reach.

On the third night, Ted found a relatively secure hiding spot inside the skeletal remains of a high-rise tower. The upper floors had collapsed, creating a natural fortress of rubble with multiple escape routes. He barricaded himself on the 14th floor and allowed himself a longer rest.

That was when it happened.

A powerful surge rippled through his body. Blue text exploded across his vision, brighter and more intense than any previous notification.

*[Sufficient Necro Essence and combat/evolution experience accumulated.]*

*[Level Up! You are now Level 3 (Necrotic Host - Stage 3)]*

*+4 to all base stats.*

*New Skill Unlocked: Intermediate Horde Command (Active) – Moderate control over small-to-medium groups of lesser zombies. Increased range and duration. Can issue simple commands with better success rate.*

*New Passive Unlocked: Decay Aura (Low) – Passive weakening effect on nearby lesser infected, making them easier to command or absorb.*

*Shop Tier Expanded: Advanced Options now available.*

*Main Evolution Path Unlocked: Necromantic Sovereign Branch.*

**Updated Status:**

**Host: Ted Harlan**

**Level: 3**

**Strength: 27**

**Agility: 26**

**Vitality: 27**

**Necro Essence: 1,612** (no deduction for level up)

A rush of power flooded every cell in Ted's body. His senses sharpened dramatically. He could feel the undead across a much wider area. The new **Intermediate Horde Command** felt like a real weapon now, not just a trick, but something that could turn small battles.

He tested it immediately on a group of nine lesser zombies wandering the street below. With only 60 Essence spent, he issued a clear command: *Gather below this building and remain silent.*

The zombies obeyed smoothly, shuffling into position and going still. The improvement was obvious.

Ted allowed himself a rare, genuine smile in the darkness.

Level 3 had arrived.

As he reviewed the expanded shop, distant engine sounds and searchlights appeared on the horizon again. Marcus had not given up. The hub search team was still out there, combing the ruins methodically.

Ted closed the status window and stood up, feeling the new strength in his limbs.

***********

Ted stood on the crumbling edge of the 14th floor, wind whipping through the broken windows of the ruined high-rise. The Level 3 surge still hummed in his veins,a deep, cold strength that made every movement feel sharper, more precise. His new stats pulsed with potential:

**Strength: 27**

**Agility: 26**

**Vitality: 27**

He could feel the difference. His body was no longer just enhanced; it was becoming something designed for dominance over the dead.

Below, on the street, the nine lesser zombies he had commanded earlier stood motionless, exactly where he had ordered them. Ted focused and activated his new **Intermediate Horde Command**.

Spending only 45 Essence, he issued a clearer, more complex order: *Spread out in a defensive line. Attack any armed humans that approach within 50 meters, then return to stillness.*

The zombies responded instantly and with better coordination than before. They fanned out smoothly, taking positions behind rubble and wrecked cars. The improvement was undeniable, the command felt natural now, almost instinctive.

Ted smiled faintly. This was only the beginning.

He tested **Decay Aura** next. A low, passive field extended from him, invisible but potent. The nearest zombies within range visibly weakened, their movements slowed slightly, flesh sagging as if rotting faster. They became easier targets, more pliable to further commands.

The System confirmed the growth:

*[Intermediate Horde Command proficiency: Low → Medium. Decay Aura (Low) active. Necromantic Sovereign Branch progressing.]*

Ted spent the next hour experimenting carefully. He commanded larger groups (up to fifteen zombies), had them perform simple tasks like moving debris to create barricades, and even used Decay Aura to weaken a small pack before absorbing their essence efficiently.

By the time he finished, his Necro Essence sat comfortably at 1,289 after spending on tests and a quick feeding.

The sun was beginning to rise when **Horde Sense** picked up a new threat.

A hub search team, six soldiers led by a familiar figure was moving through the streets two blocks away. Marcus walked at the front, bat resting on his shoulder, eyes scanning every shadow with burning hatred.

Marcus's voice carried on the wind. "He's close. I can feel it. That freak is using the dead against us. Find him!"

Ted watched from his high vantage point, hidden behind broken concrete. With Level 3 abilities, he now had real options.

He could run again.

He could hide.

Or… he could test his new power properly.

Ted chose the third option.

He descended silently to street level and positioned himself in the shadows of an alley. Using **Intermediate Horde Command**, he spent 120 Essence to take control of a nearby group of twenty-two lesser zombies. The command was crisp: *Form an ambush. Attack the armed humans when they reach the intersection. Do not pursue beyond one block.*

The zombies obeyed with surprising smoothness, moving into position behind rubble and vehicles.

When Marcus's team entered the intersection, the ambush sprang.

Zombies surged from multiple directions. The soldiers opened fire, but the coordinated attack caught them off guard. Marcus swung his bat with enhanced strength, crushing skulls, but the sudden numbers forced them into a defensive circle.

Ted didn't engage directly. He watched from the shadows, using **Decay Aura** to weaken the zombies closest to Marcus, making them slower and easier for the soldiers to kill, but also creating just enough chaos to keep the team pinned down.

One soldier went down screaming as three zombies overwhelmed him. Marcus roared in fury, "Harlan! I know you're doing this! Show yourself, coward!"

Ted remained hidden. He wasn't ready for a direct confrontation yet. This was a test and a warning.

After several intense minutes, the search team fought free, leaving two dead and several wounded. They retreated toward their vehicles, cursing and firing blindly into the ruins.

Ted released the remaining zombies and slipped away in the opposite direction, deeper into the financial district.

As he moved, the System rewarded him:

*[Successful use of Level 3 abilities in combat. +150 Necro Essence. Intermediate Horde Command proficiency increased.]*

**Necro Essence: 1,439**

Ted found a new hiding spot on the upper floors of another ruined tower and allowed himself a moment to process.
