Chapter 5 - Chapter 04: Just A Cute Friend

The music shifted to something soft and slow, the lights dimming just enough to make everything feel magical. They danced together, twirling slowly as other couples watched from the sides.

"So…" Kai said, gazing at her. "How does it feel to be the future Queen of Aquaria ?"

Clara hesitated. Then she sighed. "It's… scary, honestly. I never really wanted it. I didn't even think I'd be chosen. I'm not like Cleo… she's strong, confident, brave. I just… I don't know."

Kai squeezed her hand gently. "But you have something special too. Something even you don't see yet."

Clara looked up at him, surprised.

"I mean it," he said, smiling. "The sea knows what it's doing."

A few feet away, Ariel, Shelly and Kelly watched them with matching smiles, whispering and giggling.

"They're so cute together," Shelly whispered.

"Do you think they'll kiss ?" Kelly asked, wide-eyed.

"Not yet," Ariel said. "But soon."

Back in the center of the dance floor, Clara smiled again. For the first time since the ceremony started, she felt a little lighter. But deep down… that heaviness was still there. And she knew she couldn't ignore it forever. The royal ceremony slowly began to calm as the glowing lights in the grand coral ballroom dimmed and the music faded into soft echoes. Mermaids and mermen said their goodbyes, floating off with sleepy smiles and full hearts. It had been a beautiful night but also a very long one.

Clara yawned as she waved at the last few guests. Her tail felt heavy, her hair floated like seaweed in the breeze and her eyes could barely stay open. She looked around for a quiet moment to slip away… and finally, she got it.

She whispered to a guard and swam off toward her private chambers in the Grooter, the tallest coral tower in the palace. Her two best friends, Mini and Pebs zipped right beside her.

"We made it," Clara mumbled as she flopped onto her soft sea sponge bed. Her chambers were cozy and beautiful, with glowing jellyfish lanterns on the walls and seashells shaped like pillows.

Mini zoomed around the room, bumping gently into soft things. "This place still looks like a dream ! Are you sure it's not a Queen's dream palace already ?"

Clara laughed. "It's just my room, Mini."

Pebs floated above her head, twirling. "So, Clara…" he said, wiggling his eyebrows. "How does it feel to be the Future Queen of Aquaria, huh ?"

Clara stretched and let her body sink into the bed. "Honestly ? Tiring, scary and weird."

"Are you serious ?" Pebs blinked. "If I were Queen, I'd have a thousand sea snacks and a golden kelp throne !"

Mini giggled, doing a little loop-de-loop. "And I'd wear sparkling seashells every day and swim around giving royal advice ! I'd say, 'More bubbles for everyone ! Primary colors only !'"

Clara smiled at her silly friends. "You two are something else."

Pebs floated closer, eyes wide and sparkling. "But really, Clara. What about the crown ? And the necklace they gave you at the ceremony, what does it do ?"

Clara reached for the glowing necklace that still hung around her neck, the Liraen Heart. Its tiny blue gem shimmered gently in the dim light, warm to the touch.

"I… don't know yet," she said softly. "Mother said she'd explain everything to me soon."

Pebs swam up next to her, her fins fluttering. "It's soooo shiny. It must be special ! Do you think it gives you magic powers ? Can it turn fish into princes ? Or seahorses into sea dragons ?"

Mini snorted, puffing out his tiny chest. "I already look like a prince ! Why would I want to be a dragon ? Dragons can't do the backflip-swirl like I can !"

Clara giggled as she sat at her mirror, combing her long hair with a seashell brush. "All I know is that it's powerful. But I'm not sure how I'm supposed to use it."

"Maybe Kai knows," Pebs teased, drifting right in front of the mirror so Clara had to look at his smirking face.

Clara rolled her eyes, her reflection turning a light shade of pink. "Stop."

"Oooooh !" Mini sang, spinning in circles until she was just a blur of orange and purple. "Kai gave you that starfish charm and danced with you under the glowing pearls...."

"And he called you 'Queen' in that voice," Pebs added with a goofy smirk, imitating a deep, romantic tone. "'Oh, Your Highness, your scales are so sparkly today !'"

Clara laughed, blushing a little more. "He's just… a friend."

"Just a cute friend ?" Pebs teased, poking Clara's shoulder with a fin. "The kind of friend you want to share a kelp-wrap with ?"

"Okay, that's it," Clara said, smirking playfully. She flicked her fingers and suddenly Pebs turned into a puffed-up, round little fish with big bug eyes and tiny fins. He looked like a floating balloon with a confused expression.

"Hey !" Pebs squeaked, floating in awkward circles because his new fins were too small to steer. "What did you do to me ?! I feel like a giant bubble !"

Mini burst out laughing, rolling around in the water until she almost hit a jellyfish lantern. "Oh my fins ! Pebs, you look like a squishy sea tomato ! A very grumpy, very round sea tomato !"

Clara laughed until her stomach hurt, covering her mouth as Pebs wiggled around in frustration, trying to regain his balance.

"Change me back ! This isn't funny ! I have a reputation to uphold !"

"You sure about that ?" Clara grinned, enjoying the chaos. "I think the round look suits you. It makes you look... approachable."

But just then, the coral doors opened with a soft wave of bubbles and Queen Haisly swam in, her long silver tail trailing behind her like royalty itself. Her white hair floated like light clouds, and her pearl crown sparkled. She raised an eyebrow, taking in the sight of her daughter laughing and a very round Pebs bouncing off the ceiling. "Clara."

Clara straightened up quickly and flicked her fingers again. Pebs poofed back into a fish with a grumpy pout.

Queen Haisly sighed, though there was a hint of a smile in her eyes. "Clara, you can't use your powers like that anymore. You're going to be Queen now. That means more responsibility."

Clara gave a playful shrug, though she felt a small pang of guilt. "But what's the fun in having powers if I can't play with my best friends ?"

Her mother smiled gently, but her voice was firm. "Being Queen means setting an example. You have a kingdom watching you now. No more running off with Mini and Pebs all day. No more pranks."

Pebs looked heartbroken, her big eyes going wide. "No more hide-and-seek in the coral caves ?"

Mini gasped, horrified. "No more underwater races through the bubble tunnels ? How am I supposed to prove I'm the fastest seahorse in the seven oceans ?"

Clara sighed deeply and sank onto her bed. "So I can't be me anymore ?"

Her mother floated closer and gently brushed Clara's hair behind her ear. "You can still be you, my dear. But you have to grow into the Queen version of you."

Clara looked up, eyes soft and filled with doubt. "But I don't even know how to be a Queen. Why didn't you choose Cleo instead ? She wants it more. She's stronger than me. She's better at all of it. She actually likes the rules."

The Queen paused, her expression becoming serious. "Because you were born with something no one else has," she said quietly. "A mark of the Liraen, one that only appears once every few centuries. You were born with the Liraen Heart around your neck and the silver moon birthmark. That wasn't a gift, Clara. It was part of you from the start, this necklace can be removed around your neck. We tried in past thinking it's a curse but it is part of you."

Clara touched the necklace again, her fingers trembling slightly. The gem felt warmer now, pulsing in time with her own heart. "She's hurt, Mother. Cleo's really hurting. She wants to rule. She thinks I took it from her…"

At that moment, the large coral doors opened again and King Orion entered the room. His presence was strong and calm, like the deep ocean before a storm. He looked at Clara with eyes that held centuries of wisdom.

"I understand how you feel, Clara," he said gently, swimming to stand beside the Queen. "But Cleo, though powerful and smart, does not have what you have."

Clara looked up, unsure and searching for answers. "But what do I have ? I'm just the sister who cries over broken shells."

"The heart to rule," he said. "You feel what others feel. You speak to the sea and the sea speaks back to you. You were born not just to lead, but to listen and heal. That's something no one else, not even Cleo, can do."

Clara nodded slowly, the truth settling inside her like a soft wave reaching the shore. She didn't have all the answers yet, and she was still scared. But maybe… maybe she could grow into it.

"Cleo can still help," the King added. "She can guide and protect the kingdom with you. But the crown belongs to the one the sea chose. It is a destiny that cannot be traded."

The Queen smiled and leaned down to kiss Clara's forehead. "Rest now, my daughter. Tomorrow is a new tide."

They left quietly, the heavy coral doors clicking shut behind them. Clara sighed again as she lay back on her bed, staring up at the glowing ceiling.

Mini floated beside her, nudging her cheek. "Do you feel better ?"

"Not really," Clara whispered, clutching the starfish charm Kai had given her. "But I will. Maybe."

Pebs curled beside her, a tiny yawn slipping out of his mouth. "You'll be the coolest Queen ever. Even if you're not allowed to turn me into a sea pancake anymore. I guess I'll forgive you... eventually."

Clara laughed softly, wrapping her arms around her two best friends as they snuggled close to her.

The room darkened, the jellyfish lanterns dimming to a soft, dreamy glow that bathed everything in a pale blue light. And with her glowing necklace resting gently on her chest and her two silly best friends by her side, Clara finally drifted off to sleep, not knowing what tomorrow would bring but ready to try.
