Chapter 12 - The Rise and Fall of the Three Houses

In the pages of history, as time flowed and eras shifted, a distinct pattern emerged among three —The House of Octavius, The House of Aurelius, and The House of Verus.

The members of the House of Octavius rose above all others in politics, philosophy, and the expansion of power. One after another, every ruler who ascended the throne came from their bloodline. Alongside them, the House of Aurelius flourished in commerce and economic mastery. Over time, these two great houses formed a powerful alliance, strengthening their dominance over the realm.

But standing apart from them was the House of Verus.

Why did they choose a different path? What forced them into such a fate?

Centuries passed.

In the beginning, the House of Verus actively participated in politics, philosophy, education, and research. Yet, it did not take long for them to realize a harsh truth. While they were capable, they would never become strong enough to rule the empire. Even their ancestors—stronger and wiser than them—had failed to defeat the united forces of Octavius and Aurelius.

The two houses had already solidified their alliance.

There was no space left for Verus.

And so… they chose a different path.

The House of Verus turned their focus toward the forbidden and the extraordinary—swordsmanship and mythical creatures.

They devoted themselves to understanding these beings—how to control them, how to wield their power, and how to use them against their enemies.

But time is merciless.

Slowly, the house began to weaken.

The reason was simple yet cruel—without a worthy successor, without a powerful heir, controlling mythical creatures was impossible. And though this burden weighed heavily on the House of Verus, it was not theirs alone. With time, even the other two houses began to face the same decline.

Then came the year 1200 AD.

A single name changed everything.

Lady Selena Valerina Verus.

The only child of her family, she had once been asked by her father—after her marriage—to take responsibility for the house upon his death. It was a request born not of duty, but of deep love between father and daughter. A love that would forever be etched into history.

Selena had just begun her married life.

To leave her own household and carry the burden of her father's legacy—what would become of her new family?

Yet, her husband was an extraordinary man. Though he possessed little wealth, he remained forever grateful for the support Selena's father had given him.

In 1209 AD, Selena gave birth to her first son—Cornelius Valerin Verus, the future heir of the House of Verus.

At a time when their influence had nearly faded, his birth felt like the dawn of a new light.

By 1213 AD, war engulfed the land.

The clash of steel echoed in every corner of the kingdom.

Selena, as the sole pillar of her house, swore an oath—she would fight, and she would protect her people.

And she did.

Victory was hers.

But at a devastating cost.

She lost her beloved husband.

At just thirty years old, Selena's power expanded at an astonishing rate. Watching her rise, the members of both the House of Aurelius and the House of Octavius realized a terrifying truth—

Their era was coming to an end.

The wheel of fate had begun to turn.

In 1230 AD, Selena ascended the throne.

A new history was written.

The true strength of the House of Verus was finally revealed.

A new star had been born.

As time passed, the other two houses gradually weakened. They could not comprehend how Selena had surpassed them.

The source of her strength lay in the mythical creatures she had inherited from her father.

But inheritance alone was not enough.

She had trained relentlessly, pushing her very core to the tenth star—a feat considered impossible for ordinary humans.

Once, the House of Octavius had mocked such practices—swordsmanship and mythical arts.

In the end, those very things became the cause of their downfall.

In 1233 AD, Selena Valerina Verus passed away.

A simple death.

Yet, with her passing, power once again returned to the House of Octavius.

There were many reasons.

Selena had never tried to control her son or prepare him for the throne. Instead, she taught him how to live freely… how to enjoy life.

But after her death, Cornelius Valerin Verus finally understood—

Why his mother had kept him away from the burdens of power.

By 1234 AD, rumors of another shift in power spread across the land.

In just one year, Cornelius had grown stronger than both rival houses.

And he had already begun preparing his daughter—Valkyrie Valerina Verus—as the future ruler.

Yet, a long-standing flaw within the House of Verus remained.

Defying his mother's wishes, Cornelius married a noblewoman from afar—

Layla Luminous Aster.

Though she claimed to have little connection with her own family, the truth would prove far more dangerous.

In time, Layla Luminous Aster would become—

The very cause of Cornelius Valerin Verus's downfall.

And with him…

The suffering of the entire kingdom.
