Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: A New Path

The rain had completely stopped by the time Zarek left the alley.

The air still carried the scent of damp earth and blood, but the world beyond felt strangely calm, as if nothing had happened at all. The streets of the lower district stretched ahead, dimly lit and worn, filled with people who paid no attention to him.

Zarek walked beside the man in silence.

He didn't ask questions. Not yet.

His mind was still processing everything—the system, the power, the fight. The feeling of devouring another's strength lingered within him, unfamiliar yet intoxicating.

The man glanced at him briefly. "You're thinking too much."

Zarek didn't deny it. "…I need answers."

"You will get them," the man replied calmly. "But not all at once."

They continued walking until the narrow streets gave way to a quieter area at the edge of the district. The buildings here were older, more spaced out, and the noise of the city faded into the background.

Eventually, the man stopped in front of a small, worn courtyard.

"This will do," he said.

Zarek looked around. The place was simple—nothing special at first glance. But there was something about it. A faint stillness in the air, different from the chaos of the streets.

"…What is this place?" Zarek asked.

"A place where you won't die immediately," the man answered dryly.

Zarek frowned slightly but said nothing more.

The man stepped into the courtyard and gestured for Zarek to follow. "Before anything else, I need to confirm something."

Zarek's eyes sharpened. "…What?"

"Whether you can actually survive what you've started."

The words were calm, but their meaning was not.

Zarek stepped forward without hesitation. "Do it."

The man studied him for a moment, then nodded. "Good. At least you're not afraid."

He raised his hand slightly, and once again, that same refined energy appeared. It moved differently from Zarek's—smooth, controlled, almost natural.

"This is what cultivators use," the man said. "Energy drawn from the world, refined within the body."

Zarek watched closely.

"You, on the other hand…" the man continued, his gaze narrowing slightly, "…your energy is unstable. It devours, but it doesn't control. That is dangerous."

Zarek's expression didn't change. "…Then I'll learn."

The man's lips curved slightly. "That depends on whether your body can handle it."

Before Zarek could respond, the man moved.

It was fast.

Far faster than anything Zarek had experienced before.

A sharp pressure struck his chest, and in the next instant, Zarek was sent crashing backward.

He hit the ground hard.

Pain shot through his body, forcing the air out of his lungs.

Zarek gritted his teeth and pushed himself up, his eyes locking onto the man.

"…Again," he said.

The man raised an eyebrow. "You still want more?"

"Yes."

For a brief moment, silence lingered between them.

Then the man stepped forward again.

This time, Zarek tried to react.

He focused, his body tensing as he attempted to follow the man's movement.

But it wasn't enough.

Another strike landed.

Zarek staggered, barely managing to stay on his feet.

His breathing grew heavier.

His body ached.

But something else was happening.

Inside him, the system stirred.

"Host under stress," it echoed.

"Analyzing…"

Zarek's eyes flickered slightly.

"…Use it," he muttered under his breath.

The man paused. "…Use what?"

Zarek didn't answer.

Instead, he stepped forward again.

His movements were slower now, but more focused.

He raised his hand.

"…Devour."

The moment the word left his lips, the familiar sensation returned. A dark, consuming force surged through him, reacting to the energy around him.

The man's eyes sharpened.

"…So you can use it consciously now."

Zarek didn't respond. His focus was absolute.

For the first time, he wasn't just reacting.

He was trying to control it.

The energy around him shifted slightly, unstable but present.

The man observed him carefully, then nodded to himself.

"Interesting…"

He stepped back, lowering his hand.

"That's enough for now."

Zarek remained still, his breathing heavy, his body trembling slightly from exhaustion.

"…That wasn't a test," he said.

"It was," the man replied. "And you passed."

Zarek frowned. "…How?"

"Because you're still standing."

The answer was simple.

But it carried weight.

The man turned away slightly. "Most people would have collapsed after the first strike. You adapted. That's all that matters."

Zarek looked at his hands, feeling the faint remnants of energy within him.

"…What happens next?"

The man glanced back at him.

"Now, you learn how to control that power."

He paused briefly before adding—

"And if you fail… it will consume you instead."

Zarek's eyes darkened slightly.

But there was no hesitation.

"…Then I won't fail."

The man smiled faintly.

"We'll see."

The quiet courtyard seemed to close in around them as the sun began to rise in the distance, casting faint light over the worn ground.

For the first time since his death…

Zarek Kaine had taken a step toward something greater.
