Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Pushing the Edge

Training under Serath did not follow a pattern.

There were no fixed techniques, no repeated drills, no structured progression. Each session was different, unpredictable in its demands, yet precise in its purpose. Serath did not teach Zarek how to grow stronger.

He forced him to confront how far he was willing to go.

By the third day, the strain had already begun to show.

Zarek stood at the center of the Northern Pavilion, his breathing steady but heavier than before. Energy coiled around him—not outwardly visible, but present, dense and compressed beneath the surface.

"Again," Serath said.

Zarek didn't move immediately. His body was already at a threshold he could clearly feel. The pressure hadn't left since the last session—it lingered, building gradually, like a weight that refused to fade.

Still, he obeyed.

Energy gathered.

This time faster.

More responsive.

But also—

More demanding.

The system pulsed sharply.

[Output Efficiency Increased]

[Internal Pressure Rising Rapidly]

Zarek's fingers tightened slightly as the energy condensed in his palm. Unlike before, it resisted more. Not violently—but noticeably.

It was no longer passive.

"Don't control it," Serath said calmly. "Guide it."

Zarek's gaze hardened. "That's what I'm doing."

"No," Serath replied. "You're still deciding for it."

That answer made Zarek pause.

For a brief moment—

The energy flickered.

Then stabilized again.

"…Then what do you want?" Zarek asked.

Serath stepped closer, his presence steady, unwavering. "I want you to stop treating it like something separate."

A silence followed.

Zarek looked at the energy in his hand.

Then—

Slowly—

He changed.

Not the amount.

Not the structure.

But his intent.

Instead of forcing direction—

He allowed movement.

The energy shifted.

Not wildly.

But freely.

The resistance eased.

The pressure—

Changed.

The system responded instantly.

[State Shift Detected]

[Energy Flow Synchronization: Increasing]

Zarek's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So that's the difference."

"It always was," Serath said.

For a moment, everything aligned.

The pressure no longer pushed against him—it moved with him.

Balanced.

Stable.

Controlled—

Without force.

Then—

The presence returned.

Stronger than before.

Clearer.

"Now you understand."

Zarek's breath caught slightly.

The voice wasn't distant anymore.

It was close.

Too close.

"…Stay silent," he thought.

A pause.

Then—

"No."

The energy surged.

Not outward—

But inward.

The balance broke.

Zarek's body tensed as the pressure spiked violently, the synchronization collapsing in an instant. The system reacted sharply.

[Warning: Internal Surge Detected]

[Stability Compromised]

Serath's gaze sharpened. "Hold it."

Zarek didn't respond.

Because this time—

It wasn't entirely his choice.

The presence pressed harder.

"Why stop now?"

The energy spiraled.

Faster.

Heavier.

Zarek clenched his fist, forcing control back.

"…Because I decide."

The words were low.

But absolute.

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

The surge stopped.

The energy stabilized again, though weaker this time, strained from the clash of intent.

Silence filled the hall.

Serath didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

He simply watched.

After a few seconds, Zarek released the energy completely, letting it dissipate into the air.

His breathing was heavier now.

Controlled—

But not effortless.

Serath finally spoke. "It's speaking more clearly now."

Zarek didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And you're resisting it."

"Yes."

Serath nodded once. "Good."

Zarek looked at him. "…You're not concerned?"

Serath's expression remained calm. "Concern is for those who don't understand what they're facing."

A brief silence followed.

"You do," Zarek said.

Serath met his gaze. "No."

A pause.

"I understand enough."

That answer lingered.

Because it wasn't reassurance.

It was warning.

Before anything else could be said, a faint disturbance rippled through the air—subtle, but sharp enough to be noticed.

Serath's attention shifted slightly.

"…We have visitors."
