Chapter 3 - We Meet Again

Brian made his way to the third floor the moment the clock hit twelve. He didn't even care if he ran into Angel or not. The plan was simple: to get information about her. Justin worked on her floor, so they must have at least known each other. If not… then Brian would just have a reason to come back.

Ding.

The elevator doors slid open.

Brian stepped forward and stopped right away.

Angel stood right in front of him, about to step inside.

"You?" they both said at the same time.

Angel didn't move right away. She glanced past him, watching the people still filing into the elevator.

Brian noticed it too.

"You work here?" she asked.

Brian nodded slowly, "I do…" His eyes dropped briefly to the ID card hanging around her neck, "Didn't know that you did."

"Are you on the third floor too?"

"No... Fifth. Software development."

"Oh..." She smiled.

Then, without warning, she held out her hand toward him.

Brian frowned slightly, staring at it.

"Your phone?"

"Huh?"

"Give me your phone..." Her tone was calm, almost casual, "You wanted my number, didn't you?"

For a second, Brian just blinked at her, then he quickly pulled his phone from his pocket, unlocked it, and handed it over.

Angel typed something in. Just as she gave it back,

"You guys know each other?"

Brian glanced up as Justin walked over, looking between them.

Angel smiled first at Brian, then at Justin, "You could say that."

The elevator doors opened again, and people stepped out onto the third floor. Angel stepped inside without hesitation.

Brian and Justin followed.

"Are you going for lunch?" Brian asked.

Angel glanced at him, that same small smile still on her lips. "I am… but I need to stop by somewhere first."

"Where?" Justin asked.

Brian shot him a quick look.

Seriously?

But at the same time, he wanted to know too.

Angel tilted her head slightly, glancing up at the floor indicator before answering, "The vet... My dog's been there for a few days. She's sick."

"Oh... Hope Nala gets better soon," Justin said immediately.

Angel smiled again, "Thank you..."

Brian's expression didn't change.

Nala? He knows her dog's name? Are they close?

The elevator came to a stop, and the doors slid open. They stepped out together.

Angel adjusted her bag slightly, then looked back at them, "I'll go ahead first."

And just like that, she walked away.
