Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Neon and Silk

The city of Kolkata never truly slept.

It only changed its skin.

By day, it wore chaos—honking cars, crowded streets, restless ambition.

But by night… it transformed.

Neon lights bled into the darkness. Music pulsed through glass walls. Shadows stretched longer, hiding things people didn't dare to name.

And high above it all—

Liora Sen stood alone.

Her penthouse overlooked Park Street, where the nightlife shimmered like a living thing. From up here, everything looked small. Manageable.

Controlled.

Just the way her life was supposed to be.

Behind her, laughter echoed—soft, expensive, meaningless. Crystal glasses clinked. Business partners, politicians, socialites… all gathered to celebrate something she didn't believe in.

Her engagement.

Liora exhaled slowly, pressing her fingers against the cool glass window.

A perfect life.

A perfect match.

A perfect lie.

Her phone buzzed in her hand.

Arjun Calling.

She stared at the screen, her expression unreadable.

Arjun was everything her family wanted—wealthy, influential, untouchable. The kind of man who didn't ask for love, only loyalty.

She declined the call.

Again.

The music from inside swelled louder, like it was trying to pull her back into that suffocating world.

But she didn't move.

Because something felt… wrong.

Not dangerous.

Not yet.

Just—

Different.

Like the night was holding its breath.

---

A soft click broke the silence behind her.

Liora's body tensed instantly.

That wasn't the sound of the main door.

Too quiet.

Too deliberate.

Slowly, she turned.

At first, she thought she was imagining things.

Then she saw him.

Standing near the shadowed corner of the room, just beyond the reach of the golden light.

Watching her.

Not startled.

Not nervous.

Like he had always been there.

Her heartbeat spiked.

"Who are you?" she demanded, her voice sharper than she felt.

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

And suddenly, the distance between them didn't feel safe anymore.

"I could ask you the same," he said, his voice low, smooth—dangerously calm.

Her brows furrowed. "This is my home."

A faint smirk tugged at his lips.

"Doesn't feel like it."

Something about the way he said it—like he could see through everything—made her chest tighten.

"Security is downstairs," she warned. "You won't get far."

"Then call them."

He spread his arms slightly, almost inviting it.

But she didn't move.

Didn't press any alarm.

Didn't scream.

And they both knew it.

Silence stretched between them.

Thick.

Electric.

"Why aren't you afraid?" Liora asked quietly.

His gaze didn't leave hers.

"Maybe I should ask you that."

The city lights flickered behind her, reflecting in his dark eyes.

He wasn't dressed like the guests. No expensive suit. No polished arrogance.

Just black. Simple. Sharp.

But there was something else—

Something heavier.

Like danger wrapped in calm.

"I don't like strangers in my space," she said, taking a step forward despite herself.

"And yet," he replied softly, "you're walking closer."

Her breath caught.

She hadn't even realized it.

---

The music inside grew louder as someone opened the main hall doors for a moment—laughter spilling out before fading again.

Reality tried to return.

It failed.

Because right now—

There was only him.

"Tell me your name," she said.

He tilted his head slightly, studying her like she was a puzzle he wasn't in a hurry to solve.

"Why?"

"So I know what to call the man who broke into my house."

A pause.

Then—

"Kael."

The name settled in the air between them.

Simple.

But it didn't feel light.

"Liora," she replied before she could stop herself.

Another mistake.

His lips curved slightly.

"I know."

Her heart skipped.

"How?"

But he didn't answer.

Instead, he walked past her—close enough that she felt the shift in air, the warmth of his presence, the faint scent of something dark and unfamiliar.

He stopped near the balcony.

Looked out at the city.

"Beautiful," he murmured.

Liora turned toward him, confused.

"You broke in… to admire the view?"

Kael shook his head slightly.

"No."

He glanced back at her.

"To see if it was worth it."

Her pulse quickened.

"And?"

Their eyes locked.

For a moment, the entire world seemed to pause.

Then he said—

"Still deciding."

---

A voice suddenly called her name from inside.

"Liora! Where are you?"

Arjun.

The spell cracked.

Just slightly.

Liora looked back toward the door.

Then, instinctively—back at Kael.

But he had already stepped away.

Back into the shadows.

Like he was never meant to be seen.

"Wait—" she started.

But he raised a hand, stopping her.

"Go back to your perfect world," he said quietly. "Before someone notices you're missing."

Something about that… irritated her.

"You don't get to walk into my life and act like you understand it."

His expression didn't change.

"I don't need to understand it."

"Then what do you want?"

For the first time, there was a pause.

A real one.

Then Kael's voice dropped—

Lower.

Closer to something dangerous.

"You."

Her breath stopped.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

But enough.

Enough to shake something deep inside her.

Before she could respond—

He was gone.

No footsteps.

No sound.

Just—

Gone.

---

"Liora!"

Arjun's voice came closer now.

Reality returned in full force.

The lights. The noise. The expectations.

She stood there for a moment longer, staring at the empty space where Kael had been.

Her heart was still racing.

Her mind still spinning.

And for the first time in a long time—

She didn't feel trapped.

She felt…

Awake.

---

Far below, the city of Kolkata pulsed with life.

Unaware.

Unforgiving.

And somewhere in its endless maze of lights and shadows—

Kael disappeared into the night.

But not before leaving something behind.

A question.

A spark.

A beginning.
