Chapter 24 - CHAPTER 24: LITTLE THINGS

CHAPTER 24: LITTLE THINGS

Sometimes the biggest changes arrived disguised as little things.

A delayed reply.

A missed joke.

A moment of distraction.

Things so small they barely seemed worth noticing.

Until one day, you looked back and realized there had been dozens of them.

The next morning began with rain.

Not a storm.

Just a gentle drizzle that painted the city gray.

The kind of weather Liora usually loved.

Her phone buzzed before she even left bed.

Rowan

raining here too

A smile appeared immediately.

Liora

i think the weather follows me

Rowan

that's a terrifying amount of power

Liora

fear me

Rowan

noted

The conversation lasted less than a minute.

Yet somehow it made the morning feel lighter.

By the time she arrived at school, the rain had faded into mist.

Students crowded hallways.

Umbrellas dripped near classroom doors.

Teachers attempted to restore order.

Unsuccessfully.

Kai entered the classroom soaking wet.

"Tragedy."

Mira looked up.

"What happened?"

"The rain attacked me."

"You walked through it."

"It started it."

Jaden sighed.

"I need smarter friends."

"Impossible."

Kai dropped into his chair dramatically.

"Greatness comes at a price."

Liora laughed.

The familiar rhythm of the group settling around her.

For a while, everything felt normal.

Then during lunch, something happened.

Not important.

Not dramatic.

Just... noticeable.

The group sat beneath their usual tree.

Kai was explaining another terrible business idea.

Mira was making fun of it.

Jaden was regretting his life choices.

And Liora's phone buzzed.

A message.

She checked it.

Smiled.

And missed half the conversation.

"Lio?"

She blinked.

"What?"

Kai pointed.

"There it is again."

"What?"

"The teleportation."

"The what?"

"You leave Earth for ten seconds."

Mira nodded.

"Then come back confused."

Liora rolled her eyes.

"Maybe your conversations are boring."

"Rude."

"True, though," Jaden admitted.

Kai looked betrayed.

The table erupted into laughter.

The moment passed.

Yet across from her, Evren found himself staring at his drink for a second longer than usual.

Not upset.

Not hurt.

Just thinking.

Because Kai was right.

Lately, she did seem to disappear sometimes.

Only for a few seconds.

Then she'd come back.

Smile.

Laugh.

Act completely normal.

It wasn't a big deal.

So why did it feel strange?

He didn't know.

The thought faded quickly.

Classes resumed.

Life continued.

By the end of the day, the rain had returned.

Students rushed through hallways trying to avoid getting soaked.

The friend group gathered near the entrance.

Waiting.

"Maybe it'll stop."

"It won't."

"You don't know that."

Kai pointed dramatically toward the sky.

"I believe."

Lightning flashed.

"...Okay maybe not."

Mira laughed so hard she nearly dropped her umbrella.

Eventually they gave up waiting.

The group began walking home together.

Umbrellas opening one by one.

The city shimmering beneath rain-soaked lights.

For a while, everyone stayed together.

Then Kai and Jaden somehow ended up ahead.

Arguing.

Again.

Mira joined them.

Mostly to make the argument worse.

Leaving Liora and Evren walking behind.

A familiar position.

One they'd occupied countless times over the years.

Rain tapped softly against umbrellas.

Cars passed nearby.

The city hummed around them.

Neither spoke immediately.

The silence felt comfortable.

Then Evren glanced sideways.

"You haven't taken many photos lately."

The comment surprised her.

"Huh?"

"Your camera."

Liora looked down.

The Polaroid still hung from her shoulder.

As always.

"Oh."

Evren shrugged.

"Just noticed."

For a moment she didn't know what to say.

Because he was right.

She still carried it everywhere.

Still loved photography.

Still looked for beautiful moments.

Yet somehow...

she wasn't capturing as many.

"I guess I've been busy."

The answer came easily.

Evren nodded.

"Maybe."

And that was it.

No lecture.

No questioning.

No judgment.

Just another observation.

The conversation moved on.

Yet for some reason, the comment stayed with her.

That evening she sat at her desk staring at a stack of blank Polaroid film.

Thinking.

Her phone buzzed.

Rowan

what are you doing?

Liora looked at the camera beside her.

Then typed:

Liora

nothing really

A lie.

Not intentional.

Just incomplete.

Because she had been thinking about something.

Thinking about how Evren had noticed.

How quickly he'd noticed.

And how she hadn't.

The thought disappeared when another message arrived.

Rowan

i'm bored

Liora

that's a personal problem

Rowan

wow

Liora

i'm very supportive

The reply came instantly.

Rowan

clearly

A laugh escaped her.

Then another message.

Then another.

The conversation continued naturally.

Effortlessly.

Comfortably.

And somewhere during it, the earlier thoughts drifted away.

Not gone.

Just pushed aside.

By midnight, rain still tapped softly against the window.

The room glowed faintly from her desk lamp.

Her phone screen illuminated her face.

Rowan

anyway

Rowan

goodnight photographer

The nickname again.

A small smile appeared.

Liora

goodnight

She placed her phone down.

The room finally fell quiet.

Yet before sleeping, another memory surfaced unexpectedly.

A rainy walk home.

Evren's voice.

"You haven't taken many photos lately."

Such a simple observation.

Such a small thing.

And somehow...

he'd noticed.

Outside, the rain continued falling.

Inside, Liora eventually closed her eyes.

Unaware that the people who cared about her most were beginning to notice changes she hadn't noticed herself.
